Rumors of NVIDIA's Next GPU

NVIDIA's next-generation GPU design, the G300, may turn out to be the biggest architectural leap the graphics chip maker has ever attempted. If the early rumors are true, NVIDIA has decided move the architecture a step closer to the CPU and make GPU computing even more compelling for HPC.
##CONTINUE##
Publicly, the company has been tight-lipped on what the upcoming architecture will look like, but that doesn't prevent GPU-obsessed journalists from speculating. Some of this speculation may be based on wishful thinking, but it looks like there may be a few loose-lipped NVIDIANs out there giving us a reasonably accurate peek at the silicon. It's also likely that sources at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), NVIDIA's GPU manufacturing partner, are also feeding the rumor mill.

By the way, the G300 is often referred to as the GT300, but the latter refers only to the high-end Tesla version of the architecture, the one the supercomputing crowd would be most interested in. (Hat tip to Rick Hodgin at geek.com for clearing that up.) For our purposes, I'll just refer to it as the GT300 since HPC users are going to be mostly interested in the top-of-the-line parts anyway.

What follows is speculation heaped on top of speculation, so be warned that none of this may be true. But it makes for fun reading.

Back in April, Theo Valich in Bright Side of News reported that the new GT300 is going to have a lot more power and flexibility than the current crop of GPUs. Writes Valich:

GT300 isn't the architecture that was envisioned by nVidia's Chief Architect, former Stanford professor Bill Dally, but this architecture will give you a pretty good idea why Bill told Intel to take a hike when the larger chip giant from Santa Clara offered him a job on the Larrabee project.

According to Valich's sources, the GT300 will offer up to 512 cores, up from 240 cores in NVIDIA's current high-end GPU. Since the new chips will be on the 40nm process node, NVIDIA could also crank up the clock. The current Tesla GPUs are running at 1.3-1.4 GHz and deliver about 1 teraflop, single precision, and less than 100 gigaflops, double precision. Valich speculates that a 2 GHz clock could up that to 3 teraflops of single precision performance, and, because of other architectural changes, double precision performance would get an even larger boost.

In a later post Valich writes that the upcoming GPU will sport a 512-bit interface connected to GDDR5 memory. If true he says, "we are looking at memory bandwidth of 256GB/s per single GPU."

More importantly though, NVIDIA is said to be moving from the traditional SIMD (single instruction, multiple data) GPU computing model to MIMD (multiple instruction, multiple data) or at least MIMD-like. As the name suggests, MIMD means you can run different instruction streams on different processing units in parallel. It offers a much more flexible way of doing all sorts of vector computing, and is a standard way to do technical programming on SMP machines and clusters. Presumably CUDA will incorporate MIMD extensions to support the new hardware. MIMD also happens to be architecture supported by Intel's upcoming Larrabee chip.

In fact, both the GT300 and Larrabee may end up dropping into the market at the same time -- sometime in the first half of 2010. But, as I've reported before, Intel has said it is not targeting the HPC market with Larrabee, at least not for next year. NVIDIA, on the other hand, will almost certainly be pushing GT300 silicon into its HPC Tesla products as soon as possible.

There was some speculation that the GT300 would hit the streets this year, but reports of trouble with TSMC's 40nm manufacturing technology may have slowed NVIDIA's plans. Also keep in mind that the new architecture has to drag along a growing list of programming standards -- CUDA, DirectX 11, OpenGL 3.1 and OpenCL -- so getting the new chips to satisfy everyone is no small feat.

If the speculation about the GT300 is basically true, NVIDIA will significantly expand its commitment to the GPU computing market. The Inquirer's NVIDIA curmudgeon, Charlie Demerjian, thinks too much so. He writes:

Rather than go lean and mean for GT300, possibly with a multi-die strategy like ATI, Nvidia is going for bigger and less areally efficient. They are giving up GPU performance to chase a market that doesn't exist, but was a nice fantasy three years ago.

Demerjian's rant on the GT300 is slanted toward his focus on traditional graphics apps and his obvious antipathy toward NVIDIA, but the point he makes about NVIDIA's devotion to GPU computing is valid enough.

Let's face it, if Intel fails to connect with Larrabee, the company will just write it off and keep selling its gazillion other flavors of x86. AMD has a more conservative GPU computing strategy, so it has less to lose if the market fizzles. NVIDIA is the one that has really stuck its neck out. The GT300 just sticks it out a little further.

Should Microsoft Buy Palm?

Analyst Andre Kitson at Juniper Research is recommending that now is the right time for Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) to buy Palm, giving the huge software company access to Palm's design and engineering team, many of which came from Apple. Does this make sense thought for Microsoft?
##CONTINUE##
Palm and Microsoft have been competitors for years in the mobile device space. Microsoft was a very minor player in the market until they revamped their handheld OS in 2000 and christened it Pocket PC. While it still shared many concepts with Windows, Microsoft was finally beginning to understand that putting a desktop user interface on a 3" screen wasn't the right way to go. It took a few years, but Microsoft ultimately defeated Palm.

Or, should I say, Palm defeated itself? Not to take anything away from Microsoft's efforts, but Palm has had a number of missteps over the years. Palm OS5, the most recent OS from Palm until last Saturday when the first WebOS device shipped, was released in 2002. That was seven years ago, multiple lifetimes in the digital world. They failed to get a single manufacturer to buy OS6. Even Palm didn't build a PDA with OS6 on it. By then, Palm was modeling the software side after Microsoft. Palm would split the company in two. PalmSource would develop and sell the operating system to a number of manufacturers like Sony, Garmin and PalmOne, just like MS does with all of its PC manufacturing customers. PalmOne was, of course, the hardware company and just one of a number of licensees using PalmOS.

To make a long story short, just about all of the licensees for PalmOS either walked away from the venerable OS or got out of mobile devices entirely. PalmSource has since been acquired by a Japanese company, Access, and faded from the memory of gadgets geeks the world over. PalmOne renamed itself Palm again and started working on a new platform. Eventually WebOS was announced and the Pre is now available, assuming the localSprint (NYSE: S) or Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) has one in stock for you.

Why would Microsoft want Palm now? In 2002 it made a lot of sense. Palm had well over 70% of the market share. Today, most of the market share Palm has is actually from phones running Microsoft's Windows Mobile platform. Microsoft doesn't need engineers and device designers. That isn't what Microsoft does. Sure, they have some nice keyboards and mice and they make the Zune and X-Box. The gaming market was an area that Microsoft wasn't really in, so by jumping in with their own platform, they had no existing customers to tick off, and it played right into Microsoft's desire to own the living room. The Zune is an oddity. I am sure Microsoft ticked off a ton of its customers that were using MS's Windows Media Audio codecs and the Plays For Sure DRM encryption scheme, but those customers weren't setting the world on fire with their products and I doubt MS had much licensing revenue to lose. I suspect MS got tired of the iPod dominating the MP3 player market. None of MS's customers could really make a dent in the market and from a consumer standpoint, MS seemed to be to blame when there were DRM/playback issues. It was a lose/lose for MS.

Mr. Kitson is right about one thing - Microsoft does need a cool consumer phone. I am not convinced MS has to build it though. With Windows Mobile 6.5, MS has finally got religion on the consumer side of the equation. WinMo 6.5 will not even be a year old when WinMo 7 comes out in 2010. WinMo 7 is supposed to finally be the OS that really gives the iPhone a serious run for the money.

As it stand now, MS plans to let its OEM partners like HTC build the device and sell it to the carriers. If MS started making their own devices, it would make them a competitor to their own customers, customers that can move over to Android at a moment's notice. It would do more harm than good. This is where the phone market differs from the MP3 player market. With the MP3 player market, none of the hardware/music store combos came anywhere close to what the iPod/iTunes combo is. Microsoft decided to change that. The problem with the phone market for MS isn't their hardware partners, it is Windows Mobile itself. The OS is little changed from 2005. Back then it was ok to use a stylus and have menus flying all over the place. Apple changed that in 2007 with the iPhone and it took time for MS to catch up. They are clearly headed down the right path now. The question is, can they catch Apple? Events coming out of WWDC this week may show the iPhone will make more leaps ahead, and iPhone 3.0 should ship this summer.

And what of Palm? WebOS and the Pre are make-or-break time for Palm. It is either a huge success, or it is over for Palm. I seriously doubt Palm can afford a lukewarm reception to the platform in the coming months, or they will continue to be an also ran. That won't be enough to sustain the stock price it is at today. It has moved from $1.70 in December 2007 to $11-12 today. Investors didn't run the price up for a mediocre seller. It may make sense for someone likeMotorola (NYSE: MOT) or LG to buy Palm for their hardware smarts, but not Microsoft.

##CONTINUE##

Is this the Next iPhone?

Forget E3 and WWDC, we're getting all the info we need straight from the source: China.
##CONTINUE##
Although struck by the typical blurriness we expect from leaked images from China, UMPC Fever, a Chinese technology blog, has posted what appear to be photos of the new iPhone using new, exclusive features expected in the next model, including autofocus and the built-in compass.

According to Apple Insider, the autofocus features works by tapping the screen to choose which part of the shot you want to be in focus. The focused area is outlined by a blue box (visible in images) and can also be used for shooting video.

The compass is large and fairly ridiculous: it takes up the entire screen, similar to the Voice Memo App function added in the 3.0 software.

It should be noted that these features are only rumors and that makes it more possible that the images are fabricated. That being said, the images look like Apple software and if the features exist they wouldn't run on existing iPhone models.

Although the forum appears to be down now, several sites have grabbed images and translations from Google pre-censorship.

An interesting note: Engadget noticed some differences in the actual hardware (which are compared at the top of the story), and is speculating that we could be seeing two of the rumored models that are expected to be announced at WWDC.

##CONTINUE##

##CONTINUE##

##CONTINUE##
OPhone、UPhone

Microsoft preparing to launch Kumo on June 2nd?

Remember all of the buzz a few months ago regarding Microsoft's upcoming release of its rebranded online search engine dubbed "Kumo"? It appears as if Microsoft is finally going to be showing the world what it has been working on over the past few months this June.
##CONTINUE##
Despite the fact that we still don't know what the actual rebrand name is going to be, there is going to be something big happening on June 2nd at SMX Advanced 2009 in Seattle. One of our forum members recently visited Microsoft's campus and noted that there were LCD TV's displaying a countdown with a preview of codename Kumo.

From what we've calculated the countdown is right on target with the keynote session at SMX Advanced 2009 featuring Microsoft's Online Services Division, Dr. Qi Lu. This is the first time that Dr. Qi Lu has given a presentation to the search marketing community since joining Microsoft, and given the fact that Microsoft is counting down to his keynote there is surely going to be a big announcement.

Maybe Microsoft has finally picked out a name for its online search engine, who knows. But we're definitely going to be seeing something on June 2nd. Possibly even a public preview as some sources close to the company have hinted at.

As soon as we know more about this, we'll let you guys know. Keep in mind though, Microsoft and Yahoo are still in talks once again for a search partnership. As if this couldn't get any more confusing.

Core i5 Cranks up to 3.6 GHz?

Hkpc.net is reporting that Intel has optimized the processor's Turbo Mode, cranking up the clock speed to 3.6 GHz
##CONTINUE##
Set for a launch in Q3 2009, Intel's 45nm Core i5 (Lynnfield) processor will come in three flavors: 2.66 GHz, 2.8 GHz, and 2.93 GHz. All three versions will feature four cores (4 threads for the 2.66 GHz version, 8 threads for the other two), 8 MB of L3 cache, a TDP of 95 watts, and will fit snug into the LGA-1156 socket. Additionally, all three versions feature 731 million transistors, an integrated DD3 memory controller, an integrated PCI-Express graphics controller, and support for Turbo Boost. As of today, Intel plans to price the 2.66 GHz version around $196 USD; the 2.96 GHz Core i5 will cost around $562 USD.

However, according to a report over on the Chinese website HKEPC, Intel optimized the Nehalem core as well as its Turbo Mode technology, thus giving the Core i5 a significant 5-step boost while staying within the 95 watt TDP. When set in turbo, Intel's 2.66 GHz version will speed up to 3.2 GHz, whereas the 2.8 GHz version will boost to 3.46 GHz and the 2.93 GHz to 3.6 GHz. The site also said that the two current Core i7 processors--specifically the 2.66 GHz and 2.93 GHz versions originally released in November 2008--will climb two steps as well while remaining within the 130 watt TDP.

HKEPC also confirmed that the Clarksfield quad-core processor for mobile devices will feature Hyper-Threading technology and a TDP of 35 watts; it was speculated that the processor would require a TDP of 45 or 55 watts. Additionally, the processor will come in three flavors--1.6 GHz, 1.73 GHz, and 2.0 GHz--and will also be available in Q3 2009. However, unlike the core i5, the three Clarksfield processors will be a bit more costly, ranging from $364 USD to $1054 USD.

##CONTINUE##

##CONTINUE##

##CONTINUE##

##CONTINUE##

Intel Core i5 chips to start at $196?

Last month we first heard that more affordable Core i7 derivatives were already being sampled and could arrive in their final form as early as July, with matching P55 boards. Due to overstock problems, however, several sites are now reporting that Intel may push back the release all the way until October. This will depend on a number of factors, including what AMD does with its Phenom II CPU, but as we wait for an official announcement from Intel, the folks at HKEPC claim to have obtained a list of the upcoming Core i5 parts with their respective specs and price.
##CONTINUE##
The list covers both desktop (Lynnfield) and mobile (Clarksfield) variants. The first will reportedly come in three varying clock speeds: a 2.66GHz model priced as low as $196, a 2.80GHz model priced at $284, and a 3.46GHz part with a $562 price tag. These chips will have four cores and hyper-threading support (except for the lowest-priced model), 95W thermal envelopes, 8MB of L3 cache, include dual-channel DDR3 memory controllers, and will fit in a new socket for mainstream users: LGA-1156.

As for the Clarksfield variants, HKPEC lists a 1.6GHz model priced at $364, a 1.73GHz model priced at $546, and a 2GHz "Extreme" part with a $1,054 price tag. All three chips will allegedly be quad-core offerings with hyper-threading support and 35W thermal envelopes.

##CONTINUE##

Cisco to Lay Off More Than Anticipated

Though it runs counter to recent headlines about the company’s aggressive pursuit of new markets in this down economy, analysts reportedly are saying that Cisco Systems Inc. – the world’s largest maker of computer networking equipment – are facing the likelihood of sweeping layoffs.
##CONTINUE##
According to this story by Scott Moritz of The Street.com, a research report from JP Morgan analyst Ehud Gelblum is calling for a 17 to 22 percent year-over-year decline in fourth-quarter revenues from the San Jose, California-based IT bellwether.

“We believe Cisco could also announce a 10 percent headcount reduction, which we calculate could save $900 million annually,” Gelblum reportedly said.

If true, the rumors would mark the first major concession that Cisco has made to the recession since December, when the company shut down operations for five days to cut costs – the first shut-down in Cisco’s 24-year history.

Cisco had about 66,000 employees at the end of 2008.

When reached by TMCnet, a Cisco spokesperson said the company does not comment on speculation or rumor. The spokesperson also referred TMCnet to on-the-record comments from a fiscal second quarter earnings call.

Those comments include:
“On our fiscal second quarter 2009 earnings call in February we discussed a limited restructuring where we could in the near term see a total reduction of between 1,500 and 2,000 jobs company wide. This does not represent a broad-scale layoff in our workforce.”
As well as:

“This limited restructuring is part of our ongoing, targeted realignment of resources. While Cisco constantly manages its business priorities, resources and overall employee alignment as part of our overall business management process, we are sensitive to the impact these decisions have on employees during this challenging economic environment. We are doing everything possible to minimize the impact on employees affected by the limited restructuring.”

To this point, Cisco has shown no signs of slowing down with the economy.

We reported here back in November – back before we knew who the “new” president would be – on Cisco CEO John Chambers’ comments that despite a slight dip in earnings, the world’s largest maker of computer networking gear would invest in emerging technologies and position itself to accelerate out of the slower economy.

About a month ago – in a widely anticipated move that pits Cisco against several erstwhile partners – the company unveiled a new data center architecture that includes compute, network, storage access and virtualization resources in a single rackable system.

The company also spoke to TMCnet last month after announcing its plan to acquire Pure Digital Technologies Inc., creators of Flip Video products, for $590 million.

In the past week, Cisco – which is also expanding its business on the “connected home” front – announced that it’s bolstering its data center strategy with a planned $105 million acquisition of an intelligent application management and automation solutions creator.

Cisco says its acquisition of Tidal Software, Inc. will provide timely, accurate and cost-efficient management and automation of application performance across entire business operations, from the server through the network to the desktop.

Just last week, Moritz reported on rumors that Cisco was eyeing the packet core gear market for mobile phone networks.

According to this story by Moritz, talk spread that Cisco was in trials with Verizon to make equipment that supports higher traffic volumes and sell more Web-based services – which, if you’ve been following Chambers at all in the last six month, likely means video.

If true, Cisco’s move could be devastating for a Tewksbury, Massachusetts-based stock market darling that’s picked up more and more contracts in 3G upgrades and 4G long-term evolution, or “LTE” projects: Starent Networks.

As Moritz notes, Chambers – who himself has “stubbornly” held out hope of a quick turnaround for the economy – may be facing “the unthinkable.”

“The buzz is getting stronger, so it’s anyone’s guess when it’s announced,” another analyst, who asked not to be named, reportedly told Moritz. “But probably not before they report earnings in early May.”
