Intel Scheduled to Launch Atom N450 in October

Intel is poised to phase out their Atom N270 CPU soon, thanks to the launch of its successor – the Atom N450.

The Atom N450 (codenamed Pine Trail) will be a single core CPU with built-in northbridge functions, and will work in concert with the brand new NM10 (Tiger Point) chipset. Intel will issue the last order notice for the N270 in Q1 of 2010, and the CPU will fully phase out by Q2 of 2010.

It’s expected that the N450 will launch in October of this year at the very earliest.

Elektrobit shows Moorestown-based MID prototype

Finland-based Elektrobit has recently demonstrated a cellular-voice-enabled mobile Internet device (MID) known as the Reference Device and based on Intel's next-generation Atom processor, codenamed Moorestown. The device will also sport a special build of the Linux-based Moblin v2 operating system optimized for use in MIDs and with cellular phone support. The EB design was co-developed along with Intel and Ericsson, and will be offered to companies in custom specs. Users would interface with the device via its 4-inch 3D, haptic-feedback touchscreen along with a speech recognition feature. The prototype has an HDMI output and is said to be capable of playing back HD-quality videos, even on dual screens. It has integrated Wi-Fi, a GPS sensor, micro USB and an SD card slot, though there is no indication of any onboard storage space. Mobile WiMAX or HSPA 3G cell modems will be options.

Shortcuts to social networks will be integrated into the interface, while Elektrobit's Street Director application will endow the device with a speech-enabled, turn-by-turn navigation functionality.

Moorestown is a SoC (system on chip) that contains a 45nm Atom processor core with graphics, video, and memory controllers, collectively codenamed Lincroft, along with an I/O hub codenamed Langwell. Intel promises Moorestown will consume 10 percent of the power as its current Atom CPUs.

Elektrobit's Moorestown-powered MID is expected to launch sometime in 2010, coinciding with the expected ship date of the next-generation Intel chip.

Mobile Internet Devices still coming despite smartphones, netbooks and smartbooks?

EB, which released a new MID reference design at Computex, says yes.

Some gadget observers wonder whether the Mobile Internet Device (MID) can share the same bed with the smartphone, netbook -- and now smartbooks -- and not fight over the blankets.

MIDs have not taken off, even though Intel Corp. showed several designs at CES in January and Samsung announced Mondi, the first WiMax-enabled MID, at the International CTIA Wireless conference in March.

But Vesa Kiviranta, vice president of Elektrobit Corp., or EB, which is based in Oulu, Finland, believes there is a strong future for the seemingly competing bedfellows. The company last week announced a MID reference device at Computex Taipei based on Intel's second-generation MID processor, codenamed Moorestown.

The reference device will be sold to equipment manufacturers and wireless operators who will customize the design, adding features or leaving some out, before selling them to the public, perhaps in 2010, Kiviranta told Computerworld. "We're at the very early stage, but in less than year you'll see products." He would not disclose any customers, but said discussions are under way.

The reference device will reduce development time and costs for device manufacturers, EB believes.

The company published photos of the design, showing it at 5.7 x 2.8 x .53 inches in size, making it is small enough to fit in a pocket. The touchscreen on the device is about four inches diagonally. It runs Linux and supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and WiMax or HSPA broadband. Other details, including eventual pricing, were not available.

With a screen at 3.97 inches, the design fits into the MID category, with smartphones deploying screens smaller than 3.9 inches and netbooks offering screens larger than 5 inches, Kiviranta said.

He said manufacturers will work with a "full technology package" that EB will help them customize. EB provides a description of the circuit board, mechanical design, antenna design, the Linux software and more.

Kiviranta said that MIDs have not emerged in the market faster because "many technical issues prevented advancement" including problems reducing power consumption, and even the lack of flat-rate data plans from carriers. But the MID is committed to the idea of a device that is "data-centric, always on, and pocketable."

Wireless options are improving. Clearwire now operates mobile WiMax service in Portland, Ore., and Baltimore and expects to launch in 80 markets by 2010. And AT&T announce last week it would be upgrading its HSPA 3G by the end of the year to double the theoretical bandwidth to 7.2Mbps. EB, which last year had $200 in revenues, has access to 2,000 engineers and has the size and ability to work with multiple equipment customers at one time, Kiviranta said.

"We are putting a lot of effort into the MID," he said. Kiviranta said he has heard some describe the MID market as asleep, but said: "I worked on smartphones in the past and people said the same thing before they did so well."

Intel sees MIDs as intermediary of the future

The company had MID protypes on display at Computex yesterday and announced a short list of Moorestown platform partners, including two Taiwanese firms.

Intel Corp said yesterday it remained bullish on mobile Internet devices (MID) and viewed them as a cross category between smartphones and netbooks, but with higher performance and software compatibility.

“Going into the near future, we shall see MIDs with voice capabilities, long battery life, mobile augmented reality as seen in Tom Cruise’s movie Minority Report, high-definition video, high-quality camera and constant Internet connectivity, all in a smaller package,” said Anand Chandrasekher, Intel’s ultra mobility group senior vice president and general manager, in a speech at the Computex trade show yesterday.

Demonstrating a couple of MID prototypes, Chandrasekher said future MIDs would be able to connect seamlessly all hardware peripherals and computer devices at home.

Last year, Intel introduced the Atom chip-based MID platform, codenamed Menlow, the first ground up, low power central processing unit (CPU), targeting at ultra mobile personal computers (UMPCs), MIDs and netbooks.

Intel said last October it would launch a more advanced Moorestown platform for MIDs next year.

“Moorestown, which is set to be released sometime in 2010, is on track to achieve up to 50 times idle power reduction, translating to allday computing, while reducing the board size by half, compared to its predecessor Menlow,” Chandrasekher said.

“Moorestown will be accompanied by a newer Moblin software version — the Moblin v2.0 — that is based on the Linux operating system. This software is designed specifically to deliver a greater PC-like Internet experience, while also supporting cellular voice capabilities,” he said.

Future Moorestown-based MIDs will provide dual environments such as Windows and Moblin, or even Android, he said.

The third generation of MID CPU, codenamed Medfield, is targeted at mainstream smartphones with more power reduction and is scheduled to reach to manufacturers sometime in 2011, he said.

Intel announced a short list of MID hardware and software partners working on the Moorestown platform yesterday, including Taiwan’s Quanta Computer Inc (廣達) and Inventec Appliances Corp (英華達), as well as Nordic smartphone developer Aava Mobile, UK-based storage and multimedia distributor CCI Distribution Ltd and Finland’s Elektrobit Corp, which develops embedded technology solutions for automotive and wireless industries.

Separately, Intel and Ericsson AB will cooperate in using mobile-phone technology for netbooks, helping the chipmakers benefit from the fastest-growing segment of the computer business.

Ericsson will offer a mobile-phone module that will work with Intel’s Atom chips for netbooks, Jan Backman, director of marketing for Ericsson’s mobile broadband business, said yesterday in Taipei.

“We’re recommending Intel and vice versa,” he said.

The two chipmakers will jointly design netbook technology and market their products to computer manufacturers, he said.

Intel shows first working Moorestown prototypes

Anand Chandrasekher, the senior vice president of Intel's ultra mobility group, showed off a handful of sleek prototype mobile devices containing its upcoming Moorestown platform at the Computex exhibition in Taipei on Thursday.

Moorestown is a chip platform designed for handheld computers that Intel calls mobile Internet devices (MIDs). The heart of Moorestown is a more power-efficient version of the Atom processor, named Lincroft, which is paired with a chipset called Langwell. Intel claims Moorestown uses one-fiftieth the idle power of its predecessor, the Menlow platform. The new platform is available with a range of wireless options, including Wi-Fi, WiMax and 3G cellular connectivity.

"We're not yet in [volume] production. We're getting close," Chandrasekher said, declining to be pinned down on a precise date. The chips are currently available in samples, he said.

During his speech, Chandrasekher was joined on stage by executives from hardware makers Inventec Appliances, Quanta Computer and Elektrobit, who all have working handheld devices based on the chips. The devices were all running the Moblin 2.0 version of Linux and are expected to hit the market early next year, company executives said.

Engineers managed to get the three devices working and ready for Computex in less than two months, a source familiar with the situation said, adding that Intel originally hoped to show five working prototypes at the show.

While Moorestown is nearing volume production, the current MID platform -- called Menlow -- continues to be used in new designs, a trend that is likely to continue into next year and overlap with the availability of Moorestown, Chandrasekher said.

NVIDIA's Tegra takes on Intel in the MID/PMP market

It's not quite clear that the MID has a future, but on the off chance that it does, Intel and NVIDIA are going to fight over it. And NVIDIA may well win.

When the Tegra line was launched a year ago at COMPUTEX, NVIDIA pitched it as being aimed at the mobile internet device (MID) market, and the idea seemed to be that NVIDIA could grow it up into netbooks and down into smartphones. Then at the Mobile World Congress earlier this year, the graphics giant renewed its push into MIDs with the announcement of a Tegra-based $99 hardware platform, which, at the time of the announcement, had scored some design wins with Asian ODMs.

At this year's COMPUTEX, NVIDIA is banging the MID drum yet again, and is showing off the fruits of those earlier design wins in the form of over 20 Tegra-based mobile devices that range in form factor from smaller MIDs to netbooks. I'll tackle the issue of Tegra in netbooks in a separate post, but as far as the Tegra-based MID goes, this is probably NVIDIA's fight to lose.

One form factor, two rationales, two acronyms, two markets

Intel's case for the x86-based MID/Ultramobile PC (UMPC) form factor is built around two potential usage scenarios, one for enterprise and one for consumers. The enterprise scenario is what I'll call the "legacy Windows app in your pocket" scenario, and the idea behind it is that there are all of these special-purpose enterprise Windows applications that companies would like to deploy away from the desktop, but without having to buy anyone a laptop just to run a single app. An example here would be some custom in-house Windows app that a FedEx worker might use to track inventory as he wanders around a warehouse, or a data collection app written in Access that a franchise manager would use in the course of an on-site audit of a retail location.

So in this first use case, you don't need to run Windows on the go—you just need to run one specific Windows app on the go, hence the idea of purchasing a cheap UMPC and turning it into a portable, single-purpose widget that lets you deploy this one Windows app across an entire mobile workforce at a very low cost. (For such applications, Intel prefers the term UMPC to MID, though the hardware is basically the same.)

Intel's second, consumer-focused usage scenario is centered around Linux and is aimed at wireless carriers. The idea here is that a wireless company in Europe or Asia (they're not aiming at the US market with this yet) will offer an (x86-based) entertainment and connectivity device that runs a customized, carrier-branded Linux distro and connects to the wireless network. Customers can buy these to surf the Web, download music, and play videos, and they essentially function like giant cell phones. Both Intel and NVIDIA agree on calling this second, consumer-focused device a "MID."

(Incidentally, what both of these scenarios have in common is that they envision the MID/UMPC as an application-specific device, and not as a general-purpose computing platform that can provide a scaled down version of a desktop experience.)

Tegra isn't going to hurt the enterprise usage scenarios—the tanking economy has probably already done that one in, since nobody has room in their IT budget for an experiment like that. But I can't imagine that Tegra will not blow a big, fat hole in the second, consumer-focused scenario. Tegra is bound to be a better fit in every conceivable way—performance, battery life, features—for a wireless, Linux-based MID/portable media player (PMP) than anything x86-based. This will be even more true once Adobe is done porting Flash and AIR to ARM (more on this in the next article).

Vendors like Compal, who now are making MIDs and netbooks based on both Atom and Tegra, will figure out shortly that you get more media playback performance per watt from an ARM product like Tegra than you do from anything Intel is selling, and because it's running a customized Linux distro anyway the carriers won't care that it can't run Windows.

It's also the case that there is a huge ecosystem of ARM-based media SoCs out there to choose from, so if they don't like Tegra they can pick something else. Given that reality, why would they hitch their wagon to x86, where Intel is the only vendor with a SoC part?

It looks likely that in the long-run, the Windows-based netbook is the only place where mobile x86 is truly compelling, at least until Intel gets close enough to performance/watt parity with ARM offerings that it can win on price.

Nvidia Touts Tegra Platform for High-Definition MIDs

Nvidia says its Tegra platform is ready for prime time...and partners unveiled 12 Tegra-powered mobile Internet netbooks and tablets.

Graphics developer Nvidia is looking to rachet up competition with Intel in the mobile computing and media market, and today at Computex unveiled a 12 new high-definition-capable netbooks and tablets based on its Tegra system-on-a-chip platform. With these devices, Nvidia is hoping to appropriate the term MID—for Mobile Internet Device—and turn it into something larger—and more media-friendly—than the too-big-to-be-a-smartphone, too-small-to-be-useful devices that spawned the acronym a few years ago. As one might expect from a graphics developer, Nvidia's Tegra is designed to give high-powered graphic performance—including high definition video capability and hardware acceleration for Adobe Flas content—along with low-power operation designed to keep battery-dependent devices running for hours on end.

"The mobile computing revolution has arrived," said Nvidia's mobile business general manager Michael Rayfield, in a statement. "These new Tegra-based products combine excellent Internet and media capabilities, always-on operation, and wireless connectivity for the un-tethered Internet experience consumers have been craving."

Nvidia's Tegra platform combines a CPU, HD video processor, and a low-power Nvidia GPU, and the company claims they achieve up to five times the power efficiency of existing products,. In fact, Nvidia says Tegra systems can play music for up to 25 days or push 1080p video for up to 10 hours on a single battery charge—and if saving power isn't your worry, the systems can play games at up to 46 frames per second. The systems will also be able to support Wi-Fi, 3G, and WiMax networking in order to delivery a truly mobile media experience.

One example of a Tegra-powered device is the Mobinnova élan, a netbook weighing les than two pounds with an 8.9-inch display, Wi-Fi and 3G networking, integrated Webcam, fanless operation, and 720p video support. Mobinnova is also showing its T8 tablet at Computex, which features a 10.1-inch touchscreen, HDMI and VGA video output, an integrated GPS. Although the companies note the systems can view Microsoft Office and Adobe documents, don't expect these systems to be running any flavor of Windows—at least not right out of the gate.

Neither Nvidia or its partners have announced when they expect Tegra-based systems to begin hitting consumer markets, but its a good bet at least some of the equipment makers want these products in retailers' hands before the end-of-year holiday buying season commences.

Microsoft introduce 1st MID installed Windows 7 at Computex 2009.

Computex 2009 is just a few days away. What kind of products or solutions will be raised from this year Computex? We definitely expect official announcement of Arm based Netbooks like with Ndivia��s Tegra or TI��s Omap or Qualcomm��s Snapdragon. Some of Arm based Netbooks has been discovered by few IT medias already like Wistron��s Pursebook which embedded Qualcomm��s Snapdragon chipsets.

Any issue makers from Korea here? Last year, number of Korean manufacturers released their MIDs at the Intel��s showcase like Viliv S5 and S7. Yukyung officially released their first MID call S5 and doing a good job in internationally markets but, still need to be promoted and increase their sales. Especially they are still very quite in local market too.

Intel collaborates with South Korea firms to advance MIDs

Intel Corp. has partnered with South Korea firms Infraware and SK Telecom to develop a mobile open market place based on the next-generation Mobile Internet Device (MID) platform and new mobile devices related market. Enabling this, Intel Capital has agreed to invest $ 5M in software developer Infraware.

The newly formed relationship encompasses the development of Moorestown, Intel's next-generation MID platform based on the Atom processor, the development of Infraware's Moblin OS platform, related middleware, UI and Total solutions, and SK Telecom's Ecosystem to address the international MID application market.

"This strategic collaboration demonstrates our continuing efforts to deliver superior user experience on MIDs based on Intel Architecture" says HS Lee, country manager of Intel Korea. "Through Intel's Moorestown platform, together with Moblin compliant OS platform and software eco-system from Infraware and SK Telecom, we expect that users will have more advanced internet experiences on MID."

The product will be showed at CES 2010; and the planned timeline for the commercialization is the first half of next year.

上网本演变

尽管在2008年,英特尔才正式提出“上网本”这一概念,但事实上,过去十年里,一直不乏有公司探索那种介于PDA与笔记本之间的终端产品。

上网本的发轫可以追溯到1991年,配置qwerty键盘的Psion Series 3面世。它采用EPOC16操作系统,可以运行多个程序并内置一个可以拨号上网的调制解调器。与迷你笔记本电脑相比,它更接近个人电脑记事本,已经具有了PDA的雏形。

1996年4月,一款号称是当时世界上最小的Windows水系统笔记本东芝Libretto 20问世。Libretto的名称来自意大利语“小书”,它采用6.1英寸显示器、486处理器,运行Windows 95。虽然配置不高,但凭借体型小的优势,Libretto 20从销售之初就大获成功,它甚至在10年后被评为“史上25款最伟大PC”之一。

1998年底,卡西欧推出迷你电脑Cassiopeia,其操作系统采用Windows CE 1.0,配置分辨率为480X240液晶触摸屏和触感舒适的键盘。它的出现也为迷你笔记本树立了新的标准。

1999年,Psion Netbook问世,它拥有7.7英寸的VGA触摸屏,内置PC Card调制解调器,支持键盘输入和触笔手写输入两种方式,电池续航时间达9个小时。Psion将其市场定位于有大量移动办公人员的企业,以使移动办公人员能及时获得企业网上信息。值得一提的是,“Netbook”这一概念及商标是由Psion公司最早提出并一直使用的。

在Psion公司推出Netbook一年之后,惠普推出了新型的手持电脑——HP Jornada 720,它采用StrongARM处理器,扩展了红外等功能。它既具有掌上电脑的玲珑外形,又可媲美笔记本的性能,为那些正为选择笔记本电脑还是掌上电脑而困扰的商务人士提供了一个不错的选择。

2004年,第一款集成WinXP系统的袖珍商业版电脑OQO Model 01问世。严格来说,它既不像上网本,也不像PDA。它拥有1GHz Crusoe处理器、20GB硬盘、256MB内存,配置了Wi-Fi和蓝牙功能,可以说是一款超级个人电脑,同时,它不足13厘米长的尺度也为小型化计算机尺寸设定了新标准。

2004年索尼发布了当时世界上最薄最轻的笔记本电脑VAIO X505。它采用的楔形设计使其边缘较窄,比今天的MacBook Air还要薄,键盘虽小但使用起来毫无局促感。

从产品设计理念上来看,直到2005年,Netbook才出现真正意义上的雏形,那就是美国麻省理工学院教授尼葛洛庞帝开发出的为发展中国家的儿童开发的“百元笔记本”OLPC和英特尔开发的“Classmate PC”。这两款产品尺寸在7.5英寸至8.9英寸,成本不超过400美元,都定位于发展中国家儿童的产品。由于市场定位的局限性,它们并未得到广泛普及,从某种意义上说,这也为后来华硕发力Eee PC的发展及Netbook的出现创造了机会。

2007年底,华硕在笔记本价格一再走低的情况下,跳出价格战的怪圈,与英特尔合作推出成本低、尺寸小的Eee PC,它们具有无线和多媒体功能,采用英特尔赛扬低端处理器,SSD硬盘,Linux / Windows XP操作系统,售价不少于200美元。

事实上,华硕Eee PC的市场没有让英特尔失望,据华硕2007年底表示,2008年Eee PC出货量可达380万台,当时惠普的2008年笔记本出货量预计620万台,苹果预计可达140万台。华硕Eee PC的成功,让它成了低成本、小尺寸笔记本电脑的标杆,也成为其它厂商借鉴经验的对象。

就在这时,英特尔在2008年初抛出了NetBook概念:上网本是采用英特尔Atom(凌动)处理器的无线上网设备,具备上网、收发邮件以及IM等功能,并可以实现流畅播放流媒体和音乐功能。对于这一概念产品的合作伙伴信息,英特尔表示众多的合作伙伴将会提供给市场非常丰富的产品,具有很大的选择性。

2009年,上网本迎来了蓬勃发展的一年,根据IDG的预计,2009年全球上网本销量将从去年的1140万台增加至2200万台,市场前景非常看好。特别是随着越来越多PC厂商的加入以及3G技术的成熟、普及,上网本的应用范围和领域将更加宽广。

PC界新秀、运营商新“宠”,上网本头上的光环从没有像现在这样闪闪发亮。一年前的“口袋互联网”伴随着3G的热风,终于装进了人们的口袋。

“现在市面上的上网本,那狭窄的键盘,糟糕的软件,性能低下的硬件,极小的屏幕,都不具备友好的用户体验,我们不会将Mac的标牌贴在这种东西上!” 苹果公司COO Tim Cook(库克)在一次电话会议中,对上网本大发牢骚。

上网本的野蛮生长,似乎是对苹果的一种挑衅。如果把Cook的话换一种说法,那么形容上网本的将是:轻薄体态、基础应用、超低功耗和完整的互联网体验,而且人们还赋予了上网本一个苹果一度为之骄傲的形容词——“时尚”。当时尚与实用相逢,再配上更加平易近人的价格,苹果坐不住了。iPod touch 或者iPhone(手机上网)在现如今的语境中,显然没有上网本那样讨人喜爱。

坐不住的还有中国的电信运营商。面对上网本市场的火爆,一向以高姿态示人的运营商们也放下身段向上网本伸出了橄榄枝。运营商与PC产业宛如干柴烈火,一拍即合。基于3G业务的数据卡或内置模块似乎已成为新款上网本必不可少的“脏器”,运营商也迫不及待的拿上网本当做迎接3G时代的首块试金石。

上网本在狂欢。第一轮快速增长还未平息,运营商紧接着带动了上网本的第二次发展,计算与通信因为3G的到来而紧密缠绕在一起。

情迷上网本
10.2英寸,1000g,绚丽的牡丹,出自服装设计师Vivienne Tam(谭玉燕)之手的惠普Mini 1000 Vivienne Tam特别版光凭借外表就足以吸引众人的目光。没错,这是一款不折不扣的上网本,虽然牺牲掉了常规笔记本的一些性能,但并不妨碍互联网接入和应用,时尚与计算融合了。

惠普并不算是一个特例。自从华硕的易PC推开上网本之门后,越来越多的PC厂商开始朝这个方向涌入,英特尔于去年四月推出的凌动处理器更是给了PC产业进军上网本强劲的动力。据IDC统计数据显示,2007年中国市场上网本出货量约为3万台,2008年猛增至50万台,2009年预计将会达到190万台以上,而全球上网本的出货量与去年相比暴增了20倍。在全球经济紧缩的背景下,上网本成为IT企业与市场唯一炙手可热的话题。

更有迹象表明,原本定位于“第二台PC”的上网本正在试图偏离“妃子”的位置而向“正宫”前进。近来,戴尔、华硕、三星、长城等厂商都不顾英特尔的劝阻推出了12英寸的上网本。在今年的IDF上,英特尔高级副总裁兼移动互联网事业部总经理阿南德称:10英寸以上的上网本“肯定会让消费者失望”,但市场仍然给了大尺寸上网本热烈的回应,上网本的发展已经超出了英特尔的预计,走上了一条不同于传统PC的发展道路。

或者,已经不能把上网本完全等同于PC了。相对于计算而言,上网本更强调的是应用与时尚,数码化特征在上网本的身上有了越来越多的体现。但不同于普通数码产品,上网本能实现高速的网络接入,实现大规模的上传下载,这一点无疑牵动着刚刚拿到3G牌照的运营商的神经。

不同于2G的语音业务,3G最大的卖点恐怕在于直接连接互联网的高速下载能力,但目前国内手机市场的智能产品还无法充分挖掘3G优势,而上网本除能浏览网页、即时通讯、收发Email,还能实现观看在线视频、大容量文件的上传下载、简单的网络游戏,补足了智能手机数据应用的短板。因此,运营商希望利用上网本这一相对成熟的移动终端来打开更广阔的3G市场。

当消费者开始“迷上”上网本这种崭新的互联网应用时,运营商巧妙的将其摆入了自己的营业大厅,并赋予上网本一个看起来很美的“优惠”——买上网本送补贴。例如,清华同方的IminiS5便获得了中移动2100元的补贴,相当于原价3000多元的产品,只要不到1000元就能买到。而获得如此高额补贴的,并非少数几家,联想、戴尔、惠普、海尔等都有产品入围。

上天不会掉馅饼下来,中移动给与高额补贴的前提是,承受方Q2的销量必须达到9万台。这样做的目的显而易见:通过内置了TD模块的上网本,牢牢抓住从笔记本用户演变过来的3G上网用户,为中移动在3G市场打下坚实的用户基础。

芝麻请开门
中国已经为迎接3G时代铺好了路,似乎已经可以看到3G应用的美好前景。但对于国内市场而言,3G手机尚在襁褓,上网本能否成为阿里巴巴打开宝库之门的那句咒语?

易观国际分析师王晓鹏认为:目前,2G用户向3G用户转化的规模比较小,还没有量的突破,但上网本对于3G用户规模以及市场培养将起到催化剂的作用。上网本价格低廉、灵巧便携的优点使其成为推广无线宽带业务的最好终端,同时也让运营商看到了推广上网卡的机会(而且以数据卡业务为主打)。内置上网卡的上网本,意义在于拉动运营商的数据业务,而数据业务的竞争将是3G竞争的主要内容。

其实,早在去年秋天,欧洲运营商就开始公开发售上网本了。据IDC分析师理查德·希姆(Richard Shim)估计,西欧市场通过移动运营商发售的上网本比例占其总销量的20%-25%。英国移动运营商沃达丰还专门为上网本开辟了一项新服务:如果用户与沃达丰签订为期两年的高速无线数据服务,支付1800美元的两年服务费,沃达丰将免费赠送一台戴尔Mini9上网本。

今年4月1日,AT&T开始在亚特兰大和费城面向签约两年家庭宽带服务和移动宽带服务的用户发售价格低至50美元的上网本。低价上网本的背后显然是运营商服务的营销,以AT&T销售的宏Aspire One上网本为例,Aspire One正常零售价为300美元左右,但签约其服务后,它的售价仅为100美元。为推销相关移动数据服务或3G模块,以获得持续的利润,移动运营商愿意为上网本付出200美元甚至更高点的成本。

上网本是运营商发起的第一场圈地运动。国外经验表明,3G业务商用初期,无线宽带是用户需求最为成熟的3G业务,那么快速的无线互联网接入设备将成为运营商吸引用户的首选产品。例如T-Mobile自去年9月份推出上网本计划以来,已经发售了60000部上网本,运营商已成为PC厂商新的销售渠道。在经济低迷的情况下,PC厂商要想获得更大的市场份额,就必须在渠道上多下功夫,而运营商本身的辐射力是再好不过的渠道了,更何况从运营商那里,PC厂商还得到了前所未有的优待。

4月15日,中国移动在北京发布了基于TD的G3上网本,17家厂商29款产品通过中国移动测试,入围合格产品库,并享受移动提供的 800~2100元补贴,其中,联想、方正、海尔、同方、惠普、戴尔、三星、宏8位PC厂商入围中移动“A类”合作伙伴,将为中移动提供“独家定制”的产品。

戏剧性的是,移动发布G3上网本的第二天,联想、海尔、同方、惠普、三星等PC品牌同样出现在了中国电信3G天翼发布会现场。它们只需要换一下产品型号,插入不同的3G模块就能成为另一家电信运营商的合作伙伴,进一步扩宽销售渠道的同时,把生产成本分摊到不同运营商身上。

互联网与通信网络的融合预示着计算与通信的联姻。3G以一种融合的姿态改写着原有的产业格局,PC与电信两条不同的产业链将从原来的相互借助转变为相互渗透。更宽的带宽为计算向通信的延伸提供了良好的基础,终端的多样化也给了运营商新的发展空间。有传言说惠普、戴尔等传统的PC厂商对智能手机展现了浓厚的兴趣,而电信运营商的目光也瞄准了热门的云计算。

英特尔提出的MID或许就是这两股洪流的交汇,尽管它现在还不够成熟,但按照英特尔的预计,MID实现的将是通信基础上完整的互联网体验,惠及的也不仅仅是个人消费领域。而且,同样是基于凌动平台,英特尔对MID更要偏爱些——上网本诞生伊始就被英特尔扣上了一顶“低端”的帽子。但作为阶段性胜利者,运营商和PC产业都在上网本身上下了重注,每一家PC企业心中都有自己的小算盘。

上网本的战国志

曾有预言说,上网本将改写PC产业的游戏规则,应用创新将成为新的增长点,就连英特尔中国区总裁杨叙都不得不承认,PC的创新已经不再单纯依靠技术升级及价格下降,而是进入了依靠功能创新及工业设计创新的新阶段。功能创新与设计创新结合而生的上网本,在这个时代彰显了巨大的生命力,甚至牵动了PC产业的发展方向。

另外,3G上网本让运营商从游戏规则的参与者迅速转变为制定者。符合“条件”的上网本品牌或产品,将得到财大气粗的运营商的推捧,难以“达标 ”的产品就有可能陷入被边缘化的危险。原因有二,首先,互联网应用是上网本的第一要义,与运营商“捆绑”的上网本在价格上更具竞争力;第二,如同手机的发展轨迹,山寨带来的只是一时的繁荣。

IDC的最新市场预测显示,全球上网本市场2009年的需求量将超过2600万台,在笔记本电脑市场的占有率将达17%。上网本在狂欢,而狂欢的背后,是PC产业借力上网本的新一轮角逐,只不过这一个回合,电信运营商成为了新的参与者。

华硕抢跑
2007年的PC市场,华硕的EeePC好像一个另类,8.9英寸的机身,不完备的PC功能让惠普、戴尔等老牌PC厂商踌躇不前,这个“小家伙”真能获得消费者的青睐么?对于快速变迁的PC产业而言,犹豫可不是什么好事。在那些PC大佬还没缓过劲的时候,华硕迅速占领了欧洲上网本市场;在上网本日益同质化的今天,华硕试图走出一条差异化的路来。EeePC S101就是华硕在这条路上落下的第一子。

EeePC S101指向的是高端商务人士,其设计与工艺体现了S101的精华。华硕认为,人人都需要上网本,因此把上网本市场做了更为细致的细分,以满足不同消费需求。面对刚刚起步的国内3G市场,华硕把宣传重心放置在上网本的续航能力上。“华硕在国外市场已经积累了很多与运营商3G合作的成功案例,超长待机对于移动上网而言,其重要意义是无可替代的。” 华硕中国业务总部Eee家族产品经理黄国洋对记者说,“华硕也会针对运营商推出不同内置模块的3G EeePC”。

雅皮惠普
“个性”一直是惠普头顶的金字招牌。在迎接上网本狂潮的时候,惠普靠的依然是这两个字。但与华硕锁定高端商务人士不同,惠普推出HP Mini 系列上网本专为时尚雅皮族打造。在惠普眼中,雅皮要求时尚生活的“唯美”,雅皮有钱又有闲,雅皮热爱旅游、追求心灵的释放……因此,惠普把上网本定位于功能强大的时尚伴侣,可以走到哪里、带到哪里。

再也没有比惠普更喜欢前卫的PC厂商了,这一点让惠普对市场的反应速度快过其他。以往就和国内电信运营商合作良好的惠普,其3G上网本必然缺少不了运营商的“深度定制”和支持;惠普漫长的产品线和服务能力也是运营商所看重的要素,而且惠普还是目前PC市场占有率最广的厂商,HP Mini是运营商眼中的明星产品。因为相互吸引,惠普将与运营商展开全面的合作。

戴尔突围
最近几年,戴尔的日子可不太好过,先是被惠普抢走了PC大佬的位子,经济紧缩又迫使其无法坚守原有的单一直销模式,而向渠道伸出了橄榄枝。戴尔危机的时候,迈克·戴尔回来了,创始人的回归增强了市场对戴尔公司的信心,戴尔也下定决心重整戴尔,他计划的第一步就是大范围进军消费级市场。

炙手可热的上网本就成了戴尔必争之地。2008年,戴尔已与沃达丰、AT&T和Verizon无线等电信运营巨头建立了合作关系,通过定制一定期限的数据服务,消费者甚至可以免费获得戴尔Mini 9,而戴尔的Mini 10问世之初就是中移动的深度定制产品,必然会享受到不少的补贴。目前,戴尔还没有公布和其他运营商合作的消息,但是没有人会忽视戴尔的存在,戴尔的全球供应链管理体系对于运营商而言,是一条不错的渠道。

另类苹果
尽管上网本是乔布斯和库克嘲笑的对象,但他们已经开始盘算着用新的产品来与上网本抗衡了。Bernstein Research分析师萨科纳吉在今年初的一份研究报告当中指出,“低端的苹果电脑,无论是台式机还是笔记本,都能让苹果市场份额的大大增加并保持其增长率”,“苹果必须认真对待1000美元以下的PC电脑市场,并针对这一市场推出符合苹果水准的产品”。

2009年2月23日,摩根士丹利发布报告,预计2009年全球PC市场营收将减少24%,整体行业需求减少11%,平均价格下滑 15%,PC整体市场的规模将由此萎缩14%,但与此相对,上网本在2009年的销量却可能翻番。外界猜测,乔布斯6月的回归可能会带来新的产品,可能比 iPhone大,比Macbook小,或许是英特尔看重的MID,或许乔布斯亲自命名,甚至苹果还可能延续iPhone和运营商分成的模式。但不管外界怎样猜测,唯一可以肯定的是,口袋互联网时代真的来了。

上网本的下一个十字路口

与“更快,更高,更强”相反,由英特尔主导提出的“上网本”概念原本就是逆潮流的。但却很巧妙的迎合了市场需求,目前的市场开局也正应证着这个观点。

上网本的本质是把部分个人电脑的应用剥离出微型计算机平台整合成独立的产品。个人电脑的普及必然带来一个“去平台化”的数码产品市场,在这个市场里,平台退居幕后,用户关心的是应用功能的实现和服务。上网本正是这样一个市场的宠儿。

上世纪中期,IBM在创造个人电脑概念后也催生了台式电脑、膝上电脑和掌上电脑的概念以及产品的成熟。那时候,电脑还是一个用于管理、创作和编辑的平台型设备。而“上网本热”则正式宣告了一个IT应用的消费时代的到来。这得益于电脑硬件价格的下降和互联网的高速发展。

在上网本和3G一起刚刚掀起一轮新的数码商业热潮时,我们已经可以开始展望下一步的未来了。

光明的前途
上网本把个人电脑的平台属性剥离,把相对集中相关的应用整合在一起。这种产品思路上的突破带来了市场积极的回应。根据IDC提供的数据和预测,2009年中国上网本销量将超过190万台,达到笔记本市场销量的12%;计世资讯则称,该规模为202万台,和2008年相比同比增长高达 124.4%。2008年,中国市场上网本销售量为90万台。

除此之外,上网本的利润也高得惊人。据业内人士介绍,接近100%的利润正是各厂商冲破英特尔12寸屏幕底线的根本动力。

对比一下其他移动网络终端设备的市场轨迹,无论是智能手机、PDA还是早期的掌上电脑(palmtop),都因为价格和高技术门槛导致了市场供给的有限。而相对于台式个人电脑的性能,移动设备的优势也不明显,也使市场需求大打折扣。上网本的发展过程,与这些并不一样。有趣的是,上个世纪末兴起的台式电脑攒机市场倒是给上网本市场的发展提供了一个有意义的参照系。

事实上,上网本的热销,很大程度上并不是因为“上网”或者“3G”的概念。而是大量3000元以下的笔记本电脑进入市场,对收入层次不高的用户来说,意义很大。早在两年前,“1999元的神舟笔记本”就给这样的产品策略提供了分析样本。

对于上网本的另一大重要元素——3G模块的置入,也有一个参照系:中电飞华。

中电飞华是由国家电网公司控股的虚拟ISP,采用的技术是用电网线路传输网络信号。中电飞华以完善的电网线路为优势,通过购买原网通和电信的带宽资源运营互联网接入。中电飞华在老式房屋住户和租房用户中的市场占有率很高,原因很大程度在于低廉的资费和不用安装电话或重新布线的便捷。对于3G上网模块,目前可以更便捷地让用户接入互联网,且性价比更好。这是一个非常有吸引力的卖点。要知道,大多数人的大部分上网时间,还是端端正正坐在桌子前的,不过即使是这样,3G无线上网还是给了他们更舒服的解决方案,一如之前家用无线路由器的热销。

正因为如此,无论是“上网本”概念还是“3G无线上网”概念,都因市场需求而有一个光明的前途。另一方面,由于组装上网本的技术门槛低、利润高,“山寨”厂商会充分地介入,市场供给将不成问题。

借鉴攒机市场后来的发展状况,上网本会不端地拓展笔记本电脑用户的市场划分,在二三线市场中大有作为,并且普及笔记本电脑和互联网应用,而且其高额利润空间会逐渐被压缩到合理水平。这样会连带着周边很多产业的繁荣,这是“上网本热”对整个产业最大的意义所在。

品牌的格局之变
2009年4月15日,中国移动联合长城、宏、联想等PC厂商在京召开了中国移动G3笔记本上市发布会,正式公布了其未来的3G上网本战略。而中国移动与各大PC厂商联合推出的集成TD模块的3G上网本也在此次发布会上正式亮相。

事实上,在这个新闻发布会之前已经有大量的品牌上网本投放市场并取得了不错的成绩。当然,同样取得优异成绩的还有那些作坊式企业生产的所谓“山寨上网本”。

山寨上网本的问题是大厂商难以回避的问题,诚然在质量和功能上品牌产品显然完胜。但消费产品市场从来都不是技术先进一定能取胜的。

面对这个问题,国内某电脑生产商销售主管告诉记者:“上网本的市场规模足够大,这块蛋糕大家都有份,都能吃饱。”这可能代表了很多品牌上网本厂商对“山寨”的看法。但即便是这样,品牌上网本还是要面临和山寨上网本的市场竞争。而在这场竞争中,市场定位不清晰以及核心竞争力不明显的问题仍然尴尬地存在着。

移动内部资深专家尚斌在博客上撰文表示,G3上网本的目标客户群分四类:高校学生,初、高中学生;商务人士,行业客户;具有一定教育背景的年轻进城务工人员;农村特定群体。这个几乎概括了整个个人电脑用户群的分类方法非但没有指出G3上网本的竞争优势,而且对于后两类人群,显然会更亲睐于山寨上网本的廉价和方便的销售渠道。

这样一种观点反映出品牌上网本在这个并不高端的市场上所感受到的困扰。幸运的是有运营商的合作,给了他们在这一领域坚持下去的动力。但以往新兴市场的“圈地运动”和带有对抗性的市场竞争,在上网本这个领域目前几乎没有出现。这不得不说是因为山寨上网本的强大活力。

与此同时,市场还有搅局者介入。NVIDIA一位高管曾向记者表示,要“还上网本强劲的图形图像游戏功能”。 NVIDIA想利用自己卓越的图形数据处理平台打造下一代的上网本,在轻薄便携的基础上实现高性能的娱乐和数据管理功能。

上网本市场刚刚繁荣起来,就要迎来第一次格局的调整。而这种品牌的尴尬,很可能是这次格局变化的重点。

未来:加法还是减法
上网本的产品定位其实是居于智能手机和经济型笔记本电脑之间的。探讨这样一个产品诞生是因为给智能手机做加法还是给经济型笔记本电脑做减法意义已经不大。但不妨想一想,未来上网本这个产品,会在目前产品的基础上做加法还是做减法?

按照前面所提到的NVIDIA的思路,上网本需要做加法,在现有的网络终端平台上添加更强大的影音娱乐处理能力,并把这些与互联网应用结合起来。但其实上网本还有另外一条路可以走。就是随着技术的发展,以目前“上网”为核心的功能不完全笔记本电脑这样一个定位范围不断下探笔记本电脑的价格底线。

这样,在未来上网本市场中,会分化出两条产品线,一种定位与现在的上网本相同,功能简单,组装容易,市场供应量大;另一种则位于上网本和经济型笔记本电脑之间,主打互联网影音娱乐。两种产品的相似之处在于都是功能不完全的消费型笔记本电脑,但是功能偏向不同,所以对配置和电脑构架的要求也不同。

后者的市场需求在于,当互联网增值应用足够繁荣时,能以很低价格购置一台专用来享受互联网娱乐应用的终端设备。这对用户来说是很有吸引力的。对于准备配置双电脑的中高收入人群来说,一台工作一台娱乐,节约成本物尽其用,何乐而不为?

这样的分化也解决了大厂商对于山寨上网本冲击市场的困扰。移动互联网娱乐终端对兼容性和散热等等性能优化的要求很高,相对来说生产门槛提高了。大厂商能够从容地发挥自己在设计技术和工业制造上的优势。而山寨上网本以发达的贸易渠道和低廉的价格把笔记本电脑和互联网普及到各个角落。这是一个美好的结局。

除此之外,可以想象:传统的功能全面的中高端笔记本电脑将越来越具备台式机替代品的地位,将个人台式电脑市场占领;而攒机市场会转而向工作站发展;如同前几年个人电脑市场逐步淘汰CRT显示器一样,普通性能的组装台式电脑很可能被淘汰。整个个人电脑业务的格局会因上网本技术和市场的发展的蝴蝶效应而颠覆并重组。对于更上游的硬件厂商来说,需要面对的挑战和需要抓住的机遇还有很多。

对于未来这一切的构想,有赖于技术的进步和互联网增值服务的产业升级。而归根到底,还看运营商。

运营商的胜利
事实上,无论现在还是将来,在上网本这个市场上,最终的胜利者始终是运营商。

包括中国移动G3上网本体系在内的运营商策略,意图都在于通过推广廉价个人电脑以推动移动网络的使用。而机缘巧合,上网本在以廉价笔记本电脑的身份挖掘之前个人笔记本电脑潜在用户时,这种运营商乐意看到的繁荣毫不费力地到来了。那么,当目前的潜在用户所剩无几时,最好的结果莫过于那时移动互联网增值服务体系已经全面而规范地建立起来了。这样,目前的上网本用户将来就是移动互联网ARPU值的贡献者。这是一个颠扑不破的商业模式。

但如果那个时候,大家发现移动上网也不过如此,甚至只把3G上网卡作为家用网络接入的一种替代方式。情况又会如何呢?

这大概是运营商唯一要面对的瓶颈了。互联网,无论是固态还是移动的,其商业价值在于附加于平台之上的增值服务。中国的CP和SP过去十几年的风风雨雨给上网本的下一步策略以预示和警醒。如何建立起完整的,围绕运营商的,满足用户需求的增值服务体系,至始至终是运营商到达成功的坎坷的最后一公里。

除此之外,一马平川。

毫无疑问,在执行推广上网本的策略中,各运营商都能在低风险下获得大收益。这是因为市场低层次的需求长期没被满足。这项繁荣还会持续很久,在廉价笔记本这个市场接近饱和前,运营商不妨直接把眼光放到下一个阶段,提前做好布局和准备,为最后一公里作好万全准备。

互联网周刊:作为3G业务的初体验,上网本将会对3G用户规模、市场产生何种作用?

李东平:上网本是运营商直接推动的一个圈地运动。在3G网络初有规模时,如何能够发挥网络的潜力,把网络的能力发挥出来,是运营商时时刻刻考虑的问题。而3G的宽带、快速是其优势,在还没有丰富的业务应用出现时,通过快速的无线网络接入互联网成为首选的产品。因此,上网本对于运营商的3G用户发展、市场培育具有一定的促进作用,但是没有决定作用。

王晓鹏:上网本将对3G用户规模以及市场培养起到催化剂的作用。上网本低廉、便携的优点,让其成为推广无线宽带业务最好的终端,同时也让运营商看到推广上网卡的机会(而且以数据卡业务为主打),其意义在于拉动运营商的数据业务,而数据业务的竞争将是3G竞争的主要内容。

互联网周刊:当网络和终端建设趋于完善时,上网本还能红多久?

李东平:上网本是一个概念,是目前这个阶段通过无线网络接入互联网的一种手段。而通过无线网络接入互联网的需求是不会发生变化的,未来3G以及3G后的网络发展将向更加快速的方向发展。也许未来上网本这个词会成为历史,但它所要表达的功能和概念不会消失,可能发生变化的则是上网的终端化。

刘亮:取决于用户的选择,用户会最终判断使用哪个终端是最需要的。未来一个人可能持有上网本、智能手机、笔记本电脑等多个上网终端。

互联网周刊:上网本、3G手机及山寨上网本是否会在很长时期内并存?

李东平:中国是一个大市场,这个大市场从规模来理解,意味着广阔。如果从细分角度来理解,则意味着众多的不同层面的消费者。不同层面的消费者就会有不同的消费点,有不同的消费水平,因此这些终端将是长期并存的。

王吉平:考虑到便携性,一部分用户可能会将智能手机作为3G体验的最初选择,但智能手机同时也有计算处理能力、屏幕大小的限制;而上网本有更大的价格优势,现在上网本产品上已经得到一些人的接受和肯定,所以未来还是会有两个终端。

互联网周刊:上网本生产厂商与运营商合作,是否会形成一种稳定的产业链合作模式?发展的前景如何?

王吉平:以前PC的出货量主要是看厂商的渠道突破口,现在由于移动运营商捆绑3G业务,因此目前更重要的是看谁与运营商合作得更好,谁将在这个市场占得更大。他们之间的合作主要是渠道与上游的关系,模式上不会有太复杂的变化。未来无论运营商、PC厂商都在向服务的方向上转型,提供给客户不只是产品,更是解决方案。

刘亮:早期还是会延续以前定制机的合作模式,运营商根据业务需求,提出上网本设计需求文案,制造商根据此生产出符合的设备。现在的上网本只是内置上网模块,从长期来看,运营商可能会考虑到智能终端的用户的选择,和更多的产业部门进行合作,例如搭建基于3G的服务平台,接入各种的应用和服务,从而获得更大的价值空间。

互联网周刊:目前3G上网本的计费方式和资费策略是否会调整?为什么?

李东平:短期内计费方式和资费不会有大的调整。3G上网本可以说是运营商的第一个3G的业务,运营商需要达到两个目的,一是把一些目标用户粘住,再就是获得相应的业务收入,对于一些低端话音业务用户来讲,上网本用户每月贡献的ARPU还是比较高的,运营商在初期不会主动降低这部分用户的贡献。而且,在初期运营商发展上网本用户,已经给予了比较多的补贴。

王晓鹏:运营商没有把资费做的很便宜,除了收入的原因,更重要的原因是3G的带宽依然是有限的,如果把资费做的很低,大量的用户都在无线上网,挤占了大量的资源,那通话的质量也会受影响。如果电信运营商单纯收流量费,盈利空间很小,未来运营商或将通过在上网本嵌入数据等业务来获利。

上网本3G热身赛
3G是一场跨越多个领域的全面战争,运营商需要各种类型的棋子来运筹全局。眼下的上网本之役仅仅是一次热身赛。

当4月15日晚,中国移动通信集团公司副总裁鲁向东和17家PC厂商的代表微笑着举起手中酒杯并宣布G3笔记本正式发布时,他也许已经感受到了短兵相接前的紧张空气。

仅仅十几个小时后,中国电信3G天翼发布会。11家PC厂商的13款上网本或笔记本隆重亮相。人们再次看到了昨夜出现的一些熟悉品牌,而这个戏剧化的时刻距3G牌照的发放整整一百天。

中国电信业从来不缺乏戏剧性,无论是电信重组还是眼下的3G竞赛。仿佛为了让戏剧性来得更淋漓尽致,从公交灯箱、地铁月台到电视台和网站,中国电信“3G到底有多快?”的吸引和中国移动“一元购机”的诱惑开始在公众面前交错出现乃至相映成趣。

隐没在对手华丽灯光下的中国联通终于也传出消息了:4月28日推出“沃WO”的全业务3G品牌。据称在接下来的 “友好体验”阶段,联通主打150元包3G流量的上网套餐,内置WCDMA芯片的定制上网本也将同期推出。

至此,曾被专家质疑为“透支概念”的国内3G业务,终于可以从云端落地,只不过着陆地不是预想中的手机而是上网本。但对于需要动真刀真枪的运营商来说,在这里开辟第一战场也许才是符合兵法的选择。

重划疆界
“上网本是运营商直接推动的一个圈地运动。”Frost & Sullivan中国总经理李东平告诉记者。

3月12日,TD-SCDMA技术论坛秘书长王静在“2009中国通信市场年会”上表示,中国移动争取在三年之内发展5000万用户。此前,中国电信表示,三年之内争取发展1亿用户,2009年的目标是新增3500万CDMA用户;中国联通则希望通过3至4年的运营,能够在3G市场上占据三分之一的市场份额。与各自雄心勃勃的中期规划相比,运营商今年一季度财报和营运数据直接呈现出兵临城下的形势。

中国移动仍然以4.77亿的用户规模居于首位,但新增用户数从去年底的2114万下降到1991万,同比下降12.6%,从月度数据来看,这一趋势还在扩大。其中,在整个新增移动市场份额上,中国移动连续3个月出现大幅下降。截止3月31日,TD用户总数为36.6万,似乎与庞大的总用户规模不成比例。更引人注目的是,中国移动的单位用户服务收入(ARPU值)从去年的83元降到73元,超出了很多分析机构的预期,而此前中银国际的预测是78 元。中国移动对此的解释是新用户集中在低端市场以及新营销资费案的实施——这多少意味着面对竞争不得不采取降价策略。

处于攻势的中国电信也许可以出口气了。截至一季度,CDMA用户总数为3284万,新增493万,仅3月份就同比增长634.2%,扭转了去年4季度CDMA用户流失的窘境。但在大逆转面前,中国电信不能太高兴,因为离新增3500万CDMA用户的年度目标才走了七分之一的路。据中银国际的分析,中国电信现有的CDMA用户ARPU值约为63元,随着竞争加剧,新增用户的成本还将会上升,前景不容乐观。

同样动了别人奶酪的还有中国联通。一季度的运营数据显示,联通GSM网络用户达到1.38亿,同比增长39.6%,事实上,固网语音用户也好,宽带用户也好,都呈现增长态势。“联通在三家运营商中最有潜力。”——国信证券的分析师们似乎对联通信心十足。但这只是2G时代的答卷。去年的年报已经提醒联通其持续经营收入和净利润都出现下滑,3G才是发展方向。而1.38亿2G用户能有多少转化为3G用户还是个未知数。

事实上,三家运营商都面临着净利润增长率下降或低于预期的增长。除了国际金融环境的不利影响外,传统市场的日趋饱和与其ARPU值下降是深层原因。于是通过3G进行产业升级也就成了运营商们走出产业“摊薄”困境的共同选择。

既然所见略同,难免行动趋同,3G用户规模就成了眼下衡量战果的通用标准。这一简单标准背后的理性依据来自于2G 业务的经验——用户存在巨大的换号成本,运营商的既有用户规模越大越容易维持和扩张。

——好吧,那就先圈地。从上网本开始。

破局棋子
上网本是一个有趣的事物。

作为英特尔在去年台北Computex展会上创造的名词,“上网本”只是令人眼花缭乱的移动便携设备概念之一,曾与它同台竞技的还有UMPC、MID和Mini- notebooks等新概念,但热闹过后,只有上网本一枝独秀。根据IDC的预计,今年全球上网本销量将从去年的1140万台增加至2200万台,市场前景似乎颇为美妙。

人们可能想不起来什么时候上网本突然热辣辣地跳上3G舞台,因为此前都全神贯注地盯着3G手机的风吹草动:从邓超面带迷人微笑拿出他的“互联网手机”,到TD手机操作系统和浏览器的研发,再到iPhone(手机上网)这个金苹果会砸在谁头上的猜测,3G概念仿佛已经具化和简化成一部可以随时随地满足各种需求的万能手机。然后——人们惊奇地发现,站在3G起跑线上的是上网本。

运营商或许有自己的苦衷,当3G必须从应用和终端两方面都找到落脚点时。

TD在广州放号的首日,曾有当地媒体亲自调查营业厅,发现并未出现盛况空前的场面。据了解主要原因有三:用户不想更换原有手机和号码;购机价格和资费不菲;视频聊天和手机电视等应用服务还不够成熟。而这正是当时运营商面临困境的写照。

无论是用手机遥控家电,还是拿手机扫描路边商店二维码来获取打折信息,无论是通过手机支付账单,还是捧着手机看英超德比直播,这些也许在日韩已经变得习以为常的应用,对于国内的普通大众来说还有些“未来生活”的意味。

家电需要安装通信模块,商家需要更换设备,银行需要一定的主导权,而电信网、互联网和广电网的“三网融合”计划还面临着特殊的障碍——对3G生活的畅想与实际应用的蹒跚形成了对比。当一次又一次的移动互联网会议还在热烈探讨应用前景和商业模式时,运营商等不及了。

“在3G网络刚有点规模的时候,如何能够发挥网络的潜力,把网络的能力发挥出来,是运营商时时刻刻考虑的问题。”李东平凭借对运营商的长期关注与合作做出这样的判断,“3G的宽带、快速是其优势,在还没有丰富的业务应用出现的时候,通过快速的无线网络接入互联网成为首选的产品。这也是从海外的经验获得的。”

八字有了一撇。而另一捺则来自终端。

尽管中国移动已经以更积极主动的姿态引导TD终端的开发,但从补贴研发到成品上市并非一步之遥。对中国电信来说,“互联网手机”的Wi-Fi 开关由于种种原因还不能轻易开启。当运营商发现3G无法从概念一步跳到手机的小小平台上时,只能另辟蹊径,将目光投向了方兴未艾的上网本。

作为弥补鸿沟的首选品,上网本颇具过渡特色。和手机相比,它拥有更强大的数据处理能力、更大的屏幕;与传统笔记本相比,它又更轻盈和低廉。而“上网”二字,无疑也令一直渴望让公众能体验快速网络接入的运营商感到悦耳。

在G3发布会现场,记者曾亲身体验过TD上网本,在网络稳定的前提下,可以同时开好几个视频窗口。“内置上网卡的上网本,意义在于拉动运营商的数据业务,而数据业务的竞争将是3G竞争的主要内容。”易观国际的分析师王晓鹏对记者说。

先用3G的网速黏住目标用户,再从长计议——上网本,也许是打破困局的一步妙棋。

三面众生
困局即使已经打破,怎样占据金角银边盘活全局,还得看各自独门妙技。

G3发布会现场不可谓不绚丽。位于北京CBD的世贸天阶,当晚回响着充满想象力的音乐,舞台上时而表演着花样体操,时而扭动着嘻哈街舞。

天翼3G发布会上,一个浑厚的男中音向观众介绍手机邮箱、综合办公和全球眼等实用业务,画面上出现的是一位年轻有为的商业人士。

一直针锋相对的中国移动和中国电信,还是很聪明地或者也很无奈地错开锋芒:一个向个性化人群招手,一个锁定高端商务人士;一个推崇上网本,一个更强调手机和上网卡;一个聚焦消费终端,一个向移动互联网应用大渗透。

这种差异甚至体现在了计费方式上,中国移动的上网本和上网卡按流量收费,而中国电信由于有着宽带优势,对3G业务按时长包月计费。

“短期内计费方式和资费不应该有大的调整。”李东平预测,“可以说3G上网本是运营商的第一个3G的业务,通过3G上网本运营商需要达到两个目的,一是把一些目标用户粘住,再一个就是获得相应的业务收入,相对于一些低端话音业务用户来讲,上网本用户每月贡献的ARPU还是比较高的,运营商在初期不会主动降低这部分用户的贡献的。而且,在初期运营商发展上网本用户,已经给予了比较多的补贴,从营销角度上讲,资费已经给予的优惠,所以短期内不会有实质性的调整。

但中国移动不会注意不到包月计费模式的优越性。正如艾瑞咨询分析师刘亮认为的那样:“今后资费也会随着普及率的提高而做出相应调整。近期,北京移动刚刚推出了560元包7个月的TD无线上网套餐,不再对用户进行流量限制,也是一次有益的试水。”

当两强在资费上的交锋变得不可避免时,联通又在做什么?

2月,赴欧洲采购通信设备;3月,推出两项网上便民措施;4月,公布音乐、视频和新时讯业务的高管人员……发牌后的这三个多月来,公众视线里的联通似乎没有直接卷入3G全国竞赛里,而是忙着内部的修修补补。是实属无奈还是手握好牌气定神闲?

“联通不是低调,而是因为重组要面临更多的问题。”在李东平看来,一旦业务、产品等方面的动作得到落实,联通应该很快有一些动作来响应市场发展,而且应该会模仿竞争对手进行。

王晓鹏也认同联通重组问题带来的影响,但他同时强调:“联通采用的WCDMA技术与应用均比较成熟,发展业务可以向国外的成熟经验学习,他们下一步只需要做好网络覆盖,可以节省大量精力,这也正是以前中国移动在GSM网络上的成功策略。”

事实上,看似游离于主战场的联通一直没有放弃对外部的关注和行动。既然WCDMA手机和设备产业链已经十分成熟,联通的目光也就投向了移动互联网增值领域。从面向社会高调招聘增值业务主管到与苹果的神秘谈判,联通也开始吊起人们胃口了。

“在产业链这方面,我们过去80年代出现的谷歌这些公司都非常非常有生命力,而且也非常强势。苹果公司苹果手机,尽管在中国没有得到官方的许可,但是在市场方面已经得到了成功。”在4月22日由中国国际商会和中国信息产业商会主办的首届“中国资本与产业国际论坛”上,联通公司副总裁张范的这番话或许有助于人们理解联通的下一步行动。

3G竞赛,一个都不能少。

热身赛后
如果说5月17日世界电信日后3G大战有可能全面打响,那么眼下的上网本之役仅仅是一次热身。

“上网本对于运营商的3G用户发展、市场培育具有一定的促进作用,但是没有决定作用。”李东平断言。

按照英特尔的解读,上网本以消费性质的内容为主,比如网上冲浪、听歌、聊天或收发电子邮件;适合的对象既有时尚青年、媒体记者,也有爱好炒股的家庭主妇——多元而且明确。这同时意味着上网本的对象是特定和有限的。

从业内专家的角度看来,目前3G上网资费还是偏高。3G的带宽依然是有限的。如果把资费做的很低,大量的用户都在无线上网,挤占了大量的资源,通话的质量也会受影响。”王晓鹏解释。但毕竟上亿的用户目标摆在那里,当网络建设趋于完善时,没有谁不想扩张。而那时,针对特定用户的上网本肯定是不够的。

“中国是一个大市场,这个大市场从规模来理解,意味着广阔。如果从细分角度来理解,则意味着众多的不同层面的消费者。不同层面的消费者就会有不同的消费点,有不同的消费水平,因此,各种终端将长期并存。”李东平这么认为。

不久前,中国移动研究院终端所所长于川在“联芯科技2009年度客户大会”上表示,中国移动提出的“三新”政策已经为TD终端的进一步优化做出了贡献——对于自己的终端瓶颈,中国移动并没有置之不理。类似“App Store”的应用程序商店也正在引起中国移动员工热烈的讨论,而这个商店的主要平台还是在手机上。

事实上,未来并存的不只是终端,还有话音与数据业务、固网和移动业务以及可能陆续成熟的各种移动互联网应用,甚至还有2G和3G本身。

运营商的3G第二战场、第三战场……以至第N战场,开始现出隐约的轮廓。即使是纯粹的2G战场,也能为3G竞争带来策略支持的好处,比如3G前期成本的补贴。对运营商来说,3G之战将是一场跨越多个领域的全面战争,需要各种类型的棋子来运筹全局。

紧随着热身赛之后的,也许是一场更加戏剧化、也更加充满火药味的全能赛。

Symbian: Beyond Smartphones

In the face of competition from the likes of Apple, Symbian hopes to run its mobile operating systems on netbooks, e-readers, GPS, and other mobile devices

It's soul-searching time at Symbian. The smartphone operating system lost 15 percentage points of market share last year to competitors including Apple (AAPL) and Research In Motion (RIMM). Another cell-phone maker, Motorola (MOT), backed off from supporting Symbian software.

So Symbian, newly rebranded as the Symbian Foundation, is plotting a comeback. While Symbian still has the largest market share for smartphones, the operating system may soon be running on a wide range of other electronic devices, including netbooks, global positioning systems, e-readers, and Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs), handheld gadgets just larger than smartphones. "There's a lot of interest in netbooks," David Wood, a strategist for Symbian Foundation, tells BusinessWeek.com. "I've never been as busy and rushed off my feet in my entire life. We are seeing a lot of early experimentation." Cell-phone maker Nokia (NOK) acquired all rights to Symbian last year.

Appealing to Computer Makers

Wood is quick to caution that it's still not clear how soon Symbian will make its break into new machines and which ones will carry the operating system. But if successful, the strategic shift would pit Symbian in new ways against software vendors as varied as Microsoft (MSFT), Google (GOOG)-backed Android, and the open-source Linux Foundation. It would also bring Symbian into the orbit of additional electronics manufacturers other than Nokia (NOK), which today accounts for more than 90% of shipments of Symbian-based devices, according to analysts.

Symbian is embarking on a series of moves aimed at making itself more appealing to computer makers. For starters, it is tweaking the software to run more easily and cheaply on larger devices. "The goal is to open Symbian up to more manufacturers, because relying on just one vendor has only gotten them so far," says Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst at IDC.

New releases of the software, expected in the next year or so, will automatically adjust applications and images for larger screens—rather than just stretching them to fit a space, which can cause distortions, Wood says.

Symbian engineers are also ensuring the software is compatible with a wider range of chips. A team from Nokia has managed to make the software work on Intel's (INTC) Atom chip, which powers most netbooks, Symbian Executive Director Lee Williams announced in an Apr. 16 blog. Already used in netbooks, Atom is expected to be used eventually in MIDs, smartphones, and other mobile gadgets.

Currently, Symbian runs only on chips designed for cell phones and made mainly by Qualcomm (QCOM) and Texas Instruments (TXN). Such chips can also be used in netbooks, but Symbian needs to work on Intel's processors if its backers want to tackle a bigger portion of the growing market for small computers.

New Devices: Netbooks and MIDs

Symbian is following in the footsteps of other mobile operating systems, including Microsoft's (MSFT) Windows and Google's Android, which works on netbooks and MIDs as well as smartphones.

Nokia could use its ownership of the Symbian rights to make a push into netbooks and MIDs, competing with PC makers including Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Dell (DELL), Acer and Asus. In February, Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo told a Finnish journalist that the company won't rule out joining the netbook race. While sales of smartphones that can connect to the Net and handle e-mail are expected to surge 18% this year, sales of certain low-priced netbooks are expected to soar 50%.

In part, Symbian's move is a defensive one. Some analysts speculate that increased popularity of devices such as MIDs will eat into growth of smartphone sales. "Smartphones are starting to work like PCs, and PCs like smartphones," says Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, which is supporting a rival MID operating system called Moblin. "And netbooks and MIDs are actually [often] cheaper than smartphones." In a recent survey of 1000 U.S. adults by consulting firm ABI Research, almost 50% of respondents said they may buy an MID instead of a smartphone. MIDs could displace smartphones the way smartphones displaced Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), says Philip Solis, principal analyst at ABI. "People want to use the Internet on their phones, and they are moving to bigger devices," he explains.

Symbian's move into other devices may also be precipitated by wireless carriers' demands for new flavors of machines. To encourage greater wireless data usage, service providers have recently begun carrying and promoting a broader array of devices, such as netbooks. In Western Europe, wireless carrier stores already account for as many as 25% of all netbooks sales, according to IDC.

Nokia wouldn't comment on whether it may enter the new device categories. In February, "Kallasvuo responded that we never say never and that we consider and continue to evaluate a range of business opportunities actively," a Nokia spokesperson says in an e-mail. "There was no further comment or speculation on this topic specifically." But at a Nokia general meeting on Apr. 23, Kallasvuo said that, with the help of Symbian, Nokia plans to broaden the definition of the smartphone by expanding its features into new product categories.

To be sure, Symbian still has a ways to go. One challenge: Most netbook users prefer familiar Windows menus; more than 90% of netbooks sold today run Windows software. "While we can't comment [on] Symbian's plans, we remain confident our partners and consumers will continue choosing Windows," Don Paterson, director of marketing for Windows client at Microsoft, says via e-mail.

Symbian also needs further retooling so that it works as well on Intel's Atom as it does on other chips. "But I imagine that's the sort of thing a wider community [of developers] will want to get its teeth into," Wood says.

Intel wants laptops to boot in two seconds

Intel’s Moblin 2.0 platform could be well-named, with the chipmaker hoping its open source Linux OS will deliver a two second boot time.

Forget about standby-resume routines, sleep modes and even ‘pre-boot’ environments like Splashtop. Intel reckons you’ll soon be able to take your netbook a cold start to a desktop that’s ready for work in just two seconds.

That’s the target for Moblin, the mobile-optimised Linux variant which Intel is developing for netbooks and mobile Internet devices.

Demonstrating the current alpha build of Moblin 2.0 at this month’s Linux Collaboration Summit in San Francisco, Imhad Sousou – director of Intel’s Open Source Technology Centre – showed that major components of the Linux engine, including the graphics stack, load in under five seconds.

The challenge is trimming this down even further to the point where a netbook’s total startup time is just two seconds. But Sousou declared that “we think that two second boot is possible.”

Such rapid startup times are less vital for netbooks than for a broader range of consumer devices from MIDs to in-car entertainment and navigation systems which Intel wants to see powered by an Atom processor.

Intel has released an alpha build of the Moblin 2.0 core for downloading as a Moblin Live build to run from a USB flash drive or as a virtual machine to run under VMware or KVM.

Intel Confirms Moorestown Launch For 2010

While 2010 still seems forever away, at least Intel isn't looking to delay things further with regard to its Moorestown platform. At the company's Developer Forum in Beijing, China, it confirmed that the MID platform would indeed launch sometime next year. Unfortunately, it failed to lock down a specific month or quarter, but we get the feeling we'll be hearing more exact details at its get-together in San Francisco this fall.

Moorestown will reportedly launch alongside a brand new version of Moblin, a Linux-based operating system that Intel crafted for small, handheld devices. Said platform will be designed around the firm's Lincroft system-on-chip (SoC), which includes an Atom processor core and a memory controller hub. To date, MIDs haven't enjoyed huge success in the mainstream, with most folks deciding to opt for a netbook or smartphone instead. Many analysts have suggested that the impending Moorestown launch is the shot in the arm that MIDs have been waiting for, but obviously only time will tell.

During IDF, Intel's head of Ultra Mobility, Anand Chandrasekher, demonstrated a device with Moorestown using ten times less power when idling than a similar device running a current Atom chip. Intel also noted that the new iteration of Moblin will be "optimized for a PC-like experience on the Internet and cellular voice capabilities." Speaking of, Moorestown will be the first family of chips from Intel that'll posses 3G cellular capabilities, and there will also be versions with WiMAX and HSPA support. MIDs that make phone calls? Sign us up.

Intel demos Moorestown, intros 2GHz Atom

Intel at its Developer Forum in Beijing today demonstrated the first public example of Moorestown, its next major update to the Atom processor. The first practical version is described as about 10 times more power-efficient than today's Atom chips courtesy of a smaller 45nm manufacturing process, power management and other optimizations. At the same time, the design is also smaller thanks to building in both the graphics and memory controllers into the main core while leaving just input and output to a second chip.

Moorestown is officially intended for mobile Internet devices (MIDs) that focus on basic online use and media playback but should be the first example of Atom power-efficient enough to work properly in smartphones, which have generally been off-limits to the x86 architecture and have been dominated by ARM.

At the same event, Intel also launched its two recently rumored Z500-series Atom updates. The 2GHZ Atom Z550 is Intel's fastest and includes Hyperthreading to simulate dual cores while still consuming the same 2.4W of typical power as a 1.86GHz processor. The second model, the Z515, is unique, according to its creator: while it normall runs at the same 800MHz as the base Atom chip, it consumes just 0.65W of energy in this state and can ramp up to 1.2GHz while consuming 1.4W. Changing clock speeds should theoretically allow MIDs and same-class devices to run much faster when needed without having to drain the battery excessively in a normal state.

The Z500 updates should be available today, but Moorestown is officially slated to ship sometime in 2001.

Intel Sets Launch of Moorestown, New Moblin Linux at 2010

Intel revealed more details about the future launch of its Moorestown chip platform at the Intel Developer Forum in Beijing on Wednesday, setting the target launch date at a firm 2010.

The launch of Moorestown will be accompanied by a new version of Moblin, a Linux-based operating system (OS) that Intel created for small devices.

Moorestown is an energy efficient set of chips Intel is aiming at small computers that can fit in your pocket that Intel calls mobile Internet devices (MID). The chip family will be based on the company's Lincroft system-on-chip (SoC) that includes an Atom microprocessor core and a memory controller hub. The accompanying chipset is code named Langwell.

On Wednesday, Intel's head of Ultra Mobility, Anand Chandrasekher showed off a device with Moorestown using 10 times less power when idling than a similar device running a current Atom chip.

The new version of Moblin software will be optimized for a PC-like experience on the Internet and cellular voice capabilities, Intel said in a statement.

Moorestown will be the first family of chips that Intel puts 3G cellular capabilities into, so people can make phone calls on small devices made using the chips.

The company will offer optional support for both WiMax and HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) cellular networks.

Intel had previously said Moorestown may launch in late 2009 or early 2010. New information released by the company on Wednesday put the date firmly at 2010.

ARM, Atom, PowerPC

What is a MID? It’s a Mobile Internet Device also known as a netbook. A huge battle is brewing as to whether a MID is more like a smartphone or more like a PC. It has major implications in the microprocessor market, the operating system market, for the smartphone manufacturers, for Apple and probably even the wireless network providers. Let’s look at the processors.

In the blue corner is Intel, obviously with a stronghold in the desktop and notebook PC market. They have AMD to contend with there but I’m afraid I don’t see how AMD can survive and I predict they will fall by the wayside. But that type of chip is too big and power-hungry, not to mention expensive, for other markets and so they have come out with Atom, which is a low-end embeddable x86 processor. However, it is still burdened with the x86 instruction set, which means that it requires a large and power-consuming instruction decode unit.

In the other blue corner is ARM, with a stronghold in the cell-phone market including the smart-phone market. All those 25,000 applications in the iPhone store run on ARM. Blackberries are ARM-based to, although just to add a wrinkle, manufactured by Intel (Intel acquired an ARM license when they acquired the semiconductor business of the old Digital Equipment Corporation, and renamed StrongARM to Xscale).

The battleground for the upcoming fight is the MID . These are notebook PCs with smaller screens and a much lower price point than a PC, but with larger screens than a smartphone. Intel with Atom is betting, along with Microsoft so far, that this market will demand windows binary compatibility and thus will require a Microsoft operating system and an x86 processor. ARM are betting that this is not true, that MIDs will hide the operating system, run new applications and so nobody will care what the underlying operating system will be. Which means that it will be some form of Linux such or perhaps Google’s Android (or if Apple enters this market as expected, OS-X which also Unix under the hood). Lurking around, of course, are the other smartphone operating systems, Symbian and Windows Mobile although they seem unlikely candidates for major success in the MID space (but primarily running on ARM in any case).

The really interesting wrinkle is whether Microsoft supports ARM with Windows 7 for this space. That would not give complete Windows binary compatibility but if Office was available (not just the operating system) that could be a very compelling compromise. Intel would be the big loser of this since Atom has poor power consumption and higher cost and really its only attraction is backwards compatibility with full-size PCs.

The big downside to Microsoft of supporting ARM, apart from the engineering cost, is the fallout it would likely provoke with Intel. But Microsoft has done this before when, while publicly committed to Itanium, they ported Windows to 64-bit x86 with AMD. By the way, this was done using Virtutech virtualization technology (before I worked there) with the result that Windows64 booted successfully the first day silicon was available, an extraordinary achievement.

One other wrinkle is the manufacturing. ARM is, of course, available from a huge range of suppliers. Intel will build Atom-based parts but is not in the ASIC business. TSMC will build Atom-based parts based on their recent announcement. However, the TSMC press release talks of expanding the “Intel Atom’s availability for Intel customers” which may just be marketing getting the word Intel in as many times as possible, or really may mean some serious restrictions on availability. Furthermore, the Atom is not a soft core and so can’t be prototyped in FPGAs. Whether this is a critical success factor remains to be seen. Based on my previous experience dealing with Intel, they won’t make any netlist available. Sometimes being paranoid to survive has its downside.

Lurking quietly in the 3rd corner of the microprocessor ring is PowerPC. This is heavily used in Avionics, automotive and networking (routers and cellular base-stations). It used to be the processor in the Mac, but Apple switched to Intel reportedly because they couldn’t persuade IBM to produce a low power PowerPC to keep Macbooks competitive. Both IBM and especially Freescale manufacture chips using it but somehow it is off the radar compared to ARM and Intel. One interesting facet is that Apple acquired PA Semiconductor who were developing a very low powered version of PowerPC. Apple are rumored to be producing chips embedding this processor so future Apple MIDs and possibly even future iPhones could end up with PowerPC, although it seems unlikely that Macs themselves will switch back due to the body of software that has just been expensively converted to Intel.

Ignoring the PowerPC (which at most may be a player with Apple) the bottom line is that Atom is more power-hungry and more costly (because it really is more expensive to manufacture) than ARM. Intel may be banking on getting a generation ahead in manufacturing process as a way to reduce both power and cost, but that won’t help anyone going through TSMC. ARM is much lower powered and so offers the prospect of a MID that has days of battery life (like the (ARM-based) Amazon Kindle has already, but with very different screen technology).

My gut feel is that a MID will be more like a souped up smartphone than a dumbed down PC, and so Atom will lose to ARM. In fact I think the smartphone and MID markets will converge. Microsoft will lose unless they port to ARM. There will be no overall operating system winner (like with smartphones). But a few minutes with Google will find you lots of people with an opposing view to mine.

Moblin Alpha 2 released for netbooks

Moblin, the Intel-founded open-source project aimed at netbooks, has just released the second alpha of Moblin v2. The follows the first alpha release a couple of months back. The Moblin Linux kernel was created to be a fast and lightweight platform, specifically designed to run on an Intel Atom CPU.

The release includes an updated kernel, improvements to the graphics framework and revisions to the Moblin Image Creator (MIC2). The kernel still has two graphic issues with Intel’s GMA 500 graphics chipset is not yet supported and 3D performance still a work in progress. Support for the MSI Wind netbook has also been added. This support comes in addition to the Acer Aspire One, Asus Eee PC 901 and Dell Mini 9.

The Moblin project is competing with other mobile Linux-based operating systems such as Google’s Android, Jolicloud and gOS. Moblin’s expected beta release date is still April, however we suspect there may be some slippage here. The Alpha release and pre-built images are available via the official site here. Intel postpones the launch of new Menlow Atom CPUs to mid-April

Intel has postponed the launch of its Atom Z550 and Z515 CPUs for mobile Internet devices (MIDs) to mid-April, according to sources at MID makers.

The Atom Z550 and Z515 CPUs will feature core frequencies at 1.2GHz and 2GHz, respectively, with an average power consumption of 0.22W and a TDP of 2.4W.

The Atom Z550 will support Intel's US15W chipset, while the Atom Z515 will have a choice of either US15W or low-power UL11L chipsets.

The Atom Z515 also features Intel new Burst Performance Technology (BPT), which automatically adjusts core frequency based on performance needs.

Intel Corp and LG Electronics announced a collaboration on Monday to bring the new Moorestown processor to market in mobile Internet devices (MIDs). LG will be one of the first technology companies to introduce the next-generation microprocessor. The MID product line comprises of notebooks, netbooks, and smart phones.

"We chose Intel's next-generation Moorestown platform and Moblin-based OS to pursue this segment because of the high performance and Internet compatibility this brings to our service provider customers," Jung Jun Lee, executive vice president of LG Electronics and head of its Mobile Communications Business Division, said in a statement.

Moorestown has remarkable speeds for Mobile Internet Devices.

Intel Moorestown is derived from the Linux Moblin v2.0 platform and has remarkable speeds. It will be one of the most influential chips to run in MIDs. The Intel processor includes 45nm technology which can greatly increase battery life while contributing graphics, video and a full memory controller.

"We look forward to providing them some fantastic Intel products that will deliver the best Internet experience while dramatically reducing power –contributing to the development of ultra sleek devices that offer superb battery life," Intel Corporation senior vice president Anand Chandrasekher said in a statement.

The new Intel processor uses the newest Moblin v2.0 software version.

Moreover, the all-in-one platform also includes an input/output (I/O) hub, code named "Langwell," that embraces a wide range of mobile wireless solutions. In addition, the platform comes with the newest Moblin v2.0 software version and contains support for both PC and mobile voice capabilities. LG is currently working with Sony Ericsson to initiate a new 3G network for MIDs.

"Ericsson's unparalleled relationships with global service providers will be instrumental as we define plans with LG to take this MID to market across multiple geographies around the world," Mats Norin, vice president and head of Ericsson Mobile Broadband Modules, said in a statement.

Mobile Internet Devices is a growing market.

The MID market is warming up and there are growing signs of consumer demand. Large companies are beginning to meet that demand with new 3G networks and robust processors that are small enough to run in MIDs. The Moorestown platform will be available in early 2010.

SmartDevices announced some details of its SmartQ5 MID (Mobile Internet Device). The Samrt 5 wis powered by an ARM processor and features a 4.3-ich 800×480 touchscreen display. It supports WiFi 802.11b/ga and Bluetooth connectivity. USB Host is also supported.
