What Does "Semantic Web" Mean?

The 2009 Semantic Technology Conference kicked off yesterday. Between now and Thursday, there'll be a total geek-out covering all that's coming in Web 3.0 (whatever that actually means!).
##CONTINUE##
Of special interest to me is the semantic search day. It includes a fabulous keynote panel featuring some of the top figures in semantic search research. I'm particularly looking forward to hearing Andrew Tomkins of Yahoo and Peter Norvig of Google. I've been following their work for a long time, and they are top-class thinkers. Also on the panel will be Scott Prevost of the Powerset division of Microsoft's Bing, Tomasz Imielinski of Ask, Riza Berkan of Hakia, and William Tunstall-Pedoe of True Knowledge.

I spend a lot of time researching information retrieval on the Web and how it may affect search marketing's future. A frequent question I get on my travels is: "What is the semantic Web?"

Mostly, people seem to think there's another Web being built somewhere, getting ready for launch. That's not the case. It's more about bringing meaning to the Web we already have. Now you're scratching your head and thinking, "I know what Web pages mean." And you're probably right. Point is, computers don't. Computers can figure out syntax, but that doesn't say they understand meaning.

There's a lot of research going on around sentiment analysis, as in, "I know people are talking about my brand, but are they saying nice things?" Let's face it, we all know there are two ways you can think about the word "bad." Sometimes it means good. And, not so mysteriously, sometimes it can mean not very good at all.

You can take that to another level. In New York, many tourists buy "I Love New York" T-shirts. However, the word "love" is replaced by a heart. You and I know what that means. But how would a computer?

The Web as we now know it was conceived more as a library in which anyone and everyone is able to contribute. It's built on the notion of being able to gather the world's knowledge and have it in one place. But there are no real rules.

And when it comes to search, the Web is essentially syntactic. This is why information retrieval on the Web is such a fascinating science. If you know the name of something, it's typically not too difficult to find it on the Web using a search engine. But when you don't know the name of something and have to use a description, search usually falls over.

Tell any New Yorker you had a sandwich made with rye bread, corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing but can't remember what it's called. He'll tell you it's a Reuben. But just throwing a few ingredients into a search engine may not get you such a quick or even correct response.

This is where the semantic Web comes in. It's more about Web services, where machines can work together to perform inferences in the way people do. The idea behind the semantic Web is to try to turn information on the Web into something with a much more clearly defined meaning.

At this time, maybe the earliest attempts involve using XML to embed structured data into a document alongside unstructured text. And here's where I opt out of too much talk about the underlying technology for fear of you falling asleep.

Let's go back to meaning. In most languages, syntax is how you say something. Semantics is about the meaning of what you said. So, even though the Web as we know it was developed to allow all computers to talk to each other, these computers don't actually know the meaning of what they're talking about.

The semantic Web isn't about artificial intelligence, with computers learning how to understand human language. We're talking about a concept whereby computers will have enough semantics to allow them to solve well-defined problems through the sequential processing of operations.

It may be that a software agent doesn't even come close to the conclusions that a human is capable of. But it may contribute to building a better Web than the one we have today.

And all I can say after that is: I hope you get my meaning!

Symantec axes GoEverywhere service

Symantec's GoEverywhere online data-sharing service is going nowhere, it turns out.
##CONTINUE##
The company said it would begin notifying users Friday that it was terminating the product, which it has been beta testing since January.

GoEverywhere was an experimental "Webtop" service designed to give users a single point of access to their different Web-based applications. Users could sync up different files from services such as Zoho and Google Docs, save passwords, and manage different Web programs all from a single Web site.

The project was one of the first to emerge from Symantec's new in-house technology development group, known as Incubator, but it didn't last long after the company switched CEOs in April. Neither did the head of Incubator, Art Wong, who had been with the company since its 2002 acquisition of SecurityFocus. Wong left the company last Friday, Symantec said.

A company representative could not give a reason for Wong's departure. He could not be reached for comment on this story.

Although Wong's departure raises questions about the future of Incubator, Symantec President and CEO Enrique Salem said Thursday that he had not shuttered the effort, but merely reined in some of the Incubator products launched before he took over. "What you do with an incubator is you place some bets and you do a review and you say, 'What do you think the long-term bets are going to be?'" he said. "We tried four or five things, we picked two to go forward with, and we'll fund some other new things to put in the incubator."

Symantec Senior Vice President of Strategy Ken Berryman is now in charge of Incubator.

According to a source familiar with the situation, Incubator, which was supposed to operate like an internal startup company generator, is now a shadow of its former self. "The original concept is dead," said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Symantec's Online Protection Network was built through the incubator group and another undisclosed project relating to health care is still going forward, Salem said. With Online Protection Network now spun into a business unit, the health project, called Electronic Health Group, is the only remaining Incubator project.

Under Salem's predecessor, John Thompson, Symantec moved into a wide range of new businesses, capped by its US$13.5 billion acquisition of storage vendor Veritas in 2005.

But under his watch, the focus is on building market share in Symantec's core businesses, Salem said. That means fewer acquisitions and a greater focus on internal development. "I've got to integrate all these great things we bought over the last 10 years," he said.

"We bought 30 companies," Salem noted. "We've got enough breadth. Now we need more depth and better integration so we can cross-sell more."

New members join WiMAX patent alliance

Beceem Communications, GCT Semiconductor, Sequans Communications and UQ Communications have joined the Open Patent Alliance (OPA).
##CONTINUE##
Formed in June 2008, the OPA is dedicated to offering intellectual property rights (IPR) solutions that support the development and widespread adoption of WiMAX around the globe, further boosting the open industry standard approach to 4G wireless broadband.

Beceem, GCT Semiconductor, Sequans and UQ come in as associate (non-board-level) members, joining current OPA members Acer, Alcatel-Lucent, Alvarion, Cisco, Clearwire, Huawei Technologies, Intel Corp. and Samsung Electronics.

"It's been an exciting month for the Open Patent Alliance and WiMAX 4G momentum, in general," said OPA President Yung Hahn. "The OPA ecosystem remains focused on broader choice and competitive equipment and service costs for WiMAX technology, devices and applications globally. With a critical mass of silicon providers now as members, the OPA can continue facilitating the formation of a singular, cohesive WiMAX patent pool to assist participating companies in obtaining access to patent licences from patent owners at a more predictable cost."

The most recent additions to the OPA span silicon providers to wireless carriers around the world, continuing to strengthen the open ecosystem and provide a fair, transparent and balanced IPR licencing structure.

Does Microsoft's Bing have Google running scared?

Microsoft may have developed a contender that threatens Google's Web search dominance.
##CONTINUE##
In a story headlined "Fear grips Google," the New York Post reports that the launch of Microsoft's Bing search engine has so upset Google co-founder Sergey Brin that he has top engineers working on "urgent upgrades" to Google's service. Brin is said to be leading a team to determine how Microsoft's search algorithm differs from the closely guarded one Google employs. The tabloid also notes that it's rare for Google's co-founders to have such a hands-on involvement in the company's daily operations.

"New search engines have come and gone in the past 10 years, but Bing seems to be of particular interest to Sergey," an anonymous source described as an "insider" to the newspaper.

A Google spokesperson declined to comment on the level of Brin's involvement but did tell the newspaper that the company always has a team working on improving search.

Microsoft, which launched as Bing as its default search engine earlier this month, is reportedly spending $80 million to $100 million in an ad blitz to tout its latest search effort. Rival Google, meanwhile, spent just $25 million total on advertising last year, according to an AdAge report.

Bing's launch bumped Microsoft's search share up to 11.1 percent last week from 9.1 percent the prior week, according to numbers released by market analyst ComScore.

However, that initial increase didn't impress Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who was pretty tight-lipped earlier this week when queried about Bing's arrival.

"It's not the first entry for Microsoft," Schmidt said Tuesday in an interview with Fox Business Network. "They do this about once a year."

Google Chief Financial Officer Patrick Pichette said Tuesday that the company planned to hold "a review tomorrow on it with the executive committee."

While Microsoft has a long way to go before it makes a dent in Google's business, Bing may end up being the only true alternative to Google if Yahoo decides not to compete in the search market over the next few years.

##CONTINUE##

##CONTINUE##

Lightning takes down Amazon cloud

Online book seller and cloud-computing provider Amazon.com has blamed the latest outage to hit its Elastic Compute Cloud service on a lightning strike at one of its data center.
##CONTINUE##
In a statement posted on the forums section of Amazon's Web-services site, the online retailer addressed concerns from some US customers who said their use of the EC2 service had been disrupted at around 6:30pm US Pacific Time on Wednesday. "A lightning storm caused damage to a single Power Distribution Unit (PDU) in a single Availability Zone. While most instances were unaffected, a set of racks does not currently have power, so the instances on those racks are down," the company said in a posting on the site.

The disruption lasted around four hours, during which time Amazon asked any affected customers to use alternative parts of the network. "Users with affected instances can launch replacement instances in any of the US Region Availability Zones or wait until their instance(s) are restored," Amazon said.

The company later attributed the outage to a problem on one "availability zone" and that the outage was localized. "We would like to reconfirm that this issue was limited to the single Availability Zone where this power issue occurred, and that a very small percentage of instances in that AZ were affected; this was not a generalized service issue," Amazon said.

Despite acknowledging that Amazon had dealt with the issue fairly efficiently, one user was concerned that a single lightning strike was able to bring down the service, if only in a limited way. "I was under the impression that your architecture had more resiliency built into it. Yes we can use multiple availability zones to help with a single point of failure, but I thought that even within a single availability zone there was not a single point of failure for hardware/power," the user posted to the Amazon forum.

The EC2 service provides customers with virtual access to Amazon's computing infrastructure, using virtual machines that can be created using the Xen virtualization platform. First launched in a limited beta in August 2006, the EC2 service went fully live in October 2008.

Not including the latest issue, the service has suffered two major disruptions during that time in February 2008 and October 2007. In June 2008, Amazon's main retail site suffered an outage which the company blamed on the complexity of its own systems.

A series of outages that have hit other online or cloud computing services including Google's Gmail and other applications over recent months have led some critics to question whether the cloud approach to computing is really capable of providing the resilience required by enterprise users.

In mid-May, Google services were hit by an outage which apparently affected one in 10 of its users. In January this year, software-as-a-service (SaaS) pioneer Salesforce.com experienced an outage that disrupted all its customers for approximately an hour.

Symantec vows huge push into SaaS market

At its Financial Analyst Day event in San Francisco Thursday, Symantec's top executives vowed a major push into software-as-a service and also offered a glimpse at upcoming back-up products.
##CONTINUE##
Enrique Salem, president and CEO, kicked off the event with the investment industry's analysts by saying Symantec intends to expand into software-as-a-service, an area in which it already has experience (the company now backs up 32 petabytes of customer data in the cloud with continuing growth at 5 petabytes each quarter). Salem predicted SaaS, in which Symantec will have new offerings, could comprise "15% of total revenues in the next five years."

Symantec's detailed announcements pertaining to its SaaS strategy may not come until later this year, but executives told industry analysts from the financial world that Symantec is developing a "cloud storage platform" it will offer based on what it has learned hosting massive amounts of data.

Symantec is pursuing some of these cloud-based storage efforts through its joint venture with Huawei in China, mainly to be able to deliver cloud-based storage systems to firms based in that country. Symantec also can be expected to detail various types of host- and hybrid cloud-based SaaS offerings in the area of messaging security from this fall into next year.

Adrian Chamberlain, senior vice president in Symantec's Software-as-a-Service Group, which absorbed the products, services and development team associated with the $700 million MessageLabs acquisition last year, said the objectives over the next fiscal year would be to ‘"develop new hosted and hybrid security solutions."
But Symantec also acknowledged to industry analysts it has not been as successful as it would hope in selling security products and services to customer in the small-to-mid-sized business market.

"We've fallen short on delivering on the needs of small-business customers," admitted Greg Hughes, group president of Symantec's Enterprise Products Group. A specially-designed version of Symantec's Endpoint Security product for SMBs, released in May, is the vendor's latest attempt to woo these customers.

Separately, Symantec gave more specifics about upgrades to existing products. NetBackup 7.0, expected out the second half of the next fiscal year, will include deduplication and application recovery for Oracle, while Backup Exec 2010 will include a light version of Enterprise Vault in it.

And on the prickly question of the $375,000 fine slapped against Symantec (and McAfee separately) this week regarding the automatic charging of customers for software subscriptions without their permission—Symantec has an automatic renewal-by-default policy but was accused of burying that information too deeply in contracts—Symantec today indicated it would be making changes to its method of charging customers through the opt-out approach.

Although Symantec has grown to be a $6 billion company by making about 30 acquisitions, it may not be done with buyouts, Salem hinted.

But instead of entering wholly new market segments through acquisitions, Symantec's strategy next time around is likely to be targeting companies in areas where it already is strong in order to drive consolidation, Salem said.

##CONTINUE##

##CONTINUE##

全部采用EPON产品,建设模式以FTTB(PON+LAN/DSL)为主。

##CONTINUE##

Symbian Foundation Launches Developer Site Beta

The Symbian Foundation launches its developer site as a public beta. Previously available only to private users, the new developer site features code, bug-tracking, reference documentation, a wiki and forums.
##CONTINUE##
The Symbian Foundation has launched its developer site as a public beta.

Previously available only to private users, the new developer site features code, bug-tracking, reference documentation, a wiki and forums.

According to a Symbian Foundation statement: "The Symbian Foundation Website is your primary resource [for] access to the technical and commercial information and resources you need to succeed in the wireless space. Once you log in to the Website, you'll have the ability to post and respond to items on the forum, contribute content to the wiki and access the Symbian source code."

Interested developers can go to http://developer.symbian.org to register for access to the site. The foundation also provides a video describing what the Symbian Foundation says it means to developers: freely available source code and the opportunity to innovate however developers choose to. And the foundation's developer site features information to help developers build applications in Java ME (Java Platform, Micro Edition), Flash Lite, Web technologies, Python, Ruby, .NET, Symbian C++ and others.

The Symbian Foundation was formed in 2008 after Nokia acquired Symbian Ltd. and then announced plans to deliver an open-source mobile operating system based on the Symbian OS and other variants. Lee Williams, a former Nokia executive, was tapped to head up the foundation that the cell phone giant spun out as an independent entity.

The founding companies of the Symbian Foundation were Nokia, AT&T, NTT Docomo, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Texas Instruments, Vodafone and ST Ericsson. The foundation also features more than 40 member companies.

In a keynote at the Nokia Developer Summit in April, Williams said, "The shortest path to the developers wins." And in a later interview with eWEEK, he said, "We're behind today. The Apple approach has shown that paying 30 percent to Apple for the sake of a channel is acceptable to developers."

However, Williams further explained that "today it's worth paying 30 percent to get a short path [to the marketplace]; tomorrow it won't be. You shouldn't have to pay. And when the short path exists everywhere, you won't need to pay that 30 percent."

The 30 percent is the amount Apple and other mobile platform providers are charging or planning to charge developers to distribute applications on their existing storefronts, such as the Apple App Store, Research In Motion's BlackBerry App World, Nokia's Ovi Store and Microsoft's Windows Marketplace.

Williams also said the Symbian Foundation's effort to deliver an open-source code base from what amounts to a conglomeration of different pieces of one-time commercial or proprietary code is quite difficult and different from many open-source efforts because they are "green field" efforts.

##CONTINUE##

##CONTINUE##

Google's Schmidt dings Bing

Google CEO Eric Schmidt, as one might expect, offered no public sense that Microsoft's new Bing search engine has him pacing the halls at night.
##CONTINUE##
"It's not the first entry for Microsoft. They do this about once a year," Schmidt said Tuesday in an interview with Fox Business Network. "I don't think Bing's arrival has changed what we're doing. We are about search, we're about making things enormously successful, by virtue of innovation."

Bing has been well-received in its first trip around the Internet, but it obviously has an awfully long way to go before it makes a dent in Google's business. Still, with some in the search industry now wondering if Yahoo really intends to compete in search over the next few years, Bing may shape up as the only true alternative to Google.

Schmidt seemed to acknowledge those thoughts. "Google is about getting all the information and organizing it. Yahoo has a different strategy. We think ultimately Bing will evolve to a different strategy as well."

Earlier in the day, Google Chief Financial Officer Patrick Pachette said the company planned to hold "a review tomorrow on it with the executive committee," so it's not like Google is ignoring the possible threat, either.

Schmidt held forth on a wide range of topics during the interview, including:

• Yahoo: "As you know we got within an hour of doing a very deep partnership with Yahoo, but we were unable to do it because of the government and their concerns over various parts of the deal."

• Smartphones: "This is the year of mobile phones. What we like is every one of these has a powerful browser and every one is used to search."

• And Google's new plug-in for Outlook: "I grew up with Outlook as well, which is why we're doing these things. It's very important to bridge the new kind of customer, the young customer, with the existing customer that has grown up with the Microsoft infrastructure."

Making Quantitative Sense of the Social Web

My last column offered three things to help you get started with social media based marketing: being clear about your business objectives, knowing your audience, and picking specific starting point. In this column I'll offer one more "to do." In response to e-mail, this column will address measuring the impact of the social Web on your business and using what you learn to move forward.
##CONTINUE##
Quantifying the Conversation

The starting point for measurement as it applies to understanding social media, perhaps surprisingly, has little if anything to do with your campaigns. Instead, it's about understanding the conversations. Compare the social Web with broadcast, print, direct mail, or interruptive digital media (e.g., display ads and pop-ups). Measuring the latter is straightforward: count the number of outbound communications you pushed into a selected channel and determine the extent to which you delivered those impressions against your planned or target audience. It's not at all trivial, but you do have the benefit of years of experience and established best practices available through certified and proven firms.

Measuring conversations, however, is a different matter. You've a great set of tools, such as Google Alerts and TweetDeck's search capability. In a matter of minutes, you can set up real-time monitoring of your brand, product, or service on Twitter using DIY tools from such companies as Techrigy, Collective Intellect, and Radian6. Or try full-service offerings, like BlogPulse and Cymfony platforms. By using tools like these, establishing conversation basics is within your grasp. That said, you've still got a more significant challenge ahead of you: making quantitative sense of what is inherently qualitative data. For example, consider this tweet about Southwest Airlines, including an uploaded photo: "New 737 being delivered to Southwest Airlines."

What are you supposed to make of this, other than wondering what type of truck they unloaded an airplane from? Still, it's worth something to know that people are interested enough in your company that they'd take a picture of your new plane and share it.

Social listening tools help you make sense of qualitative data by performing basic relevance analysis, quantifying how often your brand is mentioned in the context of specific search terms, for example, and the extent to which those references are positive or negative. Going further, tools like Techrigy's SM2 will give you a cut on the actual sources of data: is your audience blogging, using Twitter, or both? You can use this data to steer your outreach campaigns and cover holes in your social-media-based marketing efforts.

Measuring Tactical Efforts

Getting a bit closer to your actual business, tools like Facebook's Insights provide data that quantify the value of your business presence on a social network and your associated advertising program. Using Facebook's ad manager, you can quickly set up campaigns that target very specific slices of Facebook's massive audience. Even better, using the Insights tools, you can see who actually visited your page or clicked on your ads and establish a quantitative understanding of this platform's value to your business.

Using your own business analytics data, you can extend this analysis deeper into your social media efforts. Compare your customer relationship management data with the conversational data you uncover. You'll gain direct insights into how what is being said about you is driving your business. Because people tend to build on what others talk about, you'll see the conversations forming on the social Web. It's quite likely, then, that you'll also find questions relating to these conversations showing up in customer service. The social Web is a sort of early warning system for attentive marketers.

Software platform vendors, including nGenera, are developing integrated solutions that recognize the links between the social Web and the enterprise. CustomerThink's CEO, Bob Thompson, references nGenera EVP Brian Magierski as he describes the increasing integration between customer service and community data.

Take together, these disparate data sources -- think silos and the need to eradicate them -- can go a long way toward moving your business forward as you learn to navigate the social Web and extract the business value of the information it has to offer.

Assessing Strategic Progress

By combining tactical measures and conversational data, you can come up with a way to determine the ROI (define) for your strategic efforts. If this seems a stretch, consider this: if you tracked applicable social conversations over time and could show that shifts in conversational tonality correlated strongly with the expenses incurred in product returns and associated service outlays, wouldn't you adopt this as a strategic measure and integrate this into your business dashboard? I would.

Now add in the Net Promoter Score (NPS) and take the conversational data down to the individual conversation level. Not only do you have long-term sustainability benefits (think "green" as in profits here) of the NPS methodology, using the listening platforms you can spot the primary sources of influence and prioritize your efforts in responding to and leveraging what you learn. Looked at that way, it's a pretty short step to proving real value, all gained essentially though nothing more than listening to your customers when they talk between themselves and then translating that talk into action, inside your firm.

Tying It All Together

By taking the time to listen and measure -- and reorienting your enterprise to respond to customer data rather than defend itself against it -- it's possible to navigate directly into favorable winds, so to speak, to move your firm forward and into alignment with the things your customers find valuable and talk-worthy. That's a double win and a guaranteed competitive strength. Take advantage of the current economic conditions. Tough as they may be, now is the time to put a few paces between your team and runners coming up behind. It all starts with measurement.

SAP reshapes strategy for online software

A top executive at SAP is set to outline a new strategy today for delivering software over the internet, as the German software giant struggles to respond to a market that poses a significant long-term threat to its business.
##CONTINUE##
The early pace in the market for on-demand software, also known as "software-as-a-service", has been set by newcomers such as Salesforce.com, which normally charge a monthly subscription fee for customers to access their software over the internet.

Speaking at a conference in Amsterdam today, John Wookey, who is driving SAP's on-demand software push, will outline a new approach that ties the company's online services far more tightly to its traditional software.

"Until John got there, there was no strategy," said Bruce Richardson, an analyst at AMR Research in Boston.

"It's absolutely essential for SAP - if they don't make a viable play in the on-demand world, they will be completely overwhelmed by it," said Josh Greenbaum, an analyst at Enterprise Applications Consulting.

SAP's first home-grown attempts to respond to the on-demand software revolution have failed to gain much traction. An online service for salespeople to manage customer relationships, rivalling Sales-eforce.com, has gained only "a couple of dozen customers" in its first three years, said Mr Wookey, though he said SAP was pressing ahead with a redesigned service.

Meanwhile, Business By Design, a full suite of online applications aimed at medium-sized companies, which represents one of SAP's biggest investments in recent years, has faced teething problems that have forced a protracted delay in its launch, and executives admit that their initial plans were over-ambitious.

Acquisitions, including of software maker Business Objects, have since taken SAP's number of on-demand customers above 1,000 and provided the foundation for it to lay out a broader strategy in the area, Mr Wookey said in an interview.

The German company's new approach will be to integrate its online services far more closely with its traditional business software, in a hybrid model that tries to take advantage of the big installed base of SAP's business applications.

Customers will be able to mix online services and traditional software without running into the sort of problems that currently bedevil the software-as-a-service business, such as balkanising a company's data by holding it in different systems, said Mr Wookey.

"It's a problem that only we at SAP can solve," he added.

The simplicity of this hybrid approach is likely to have a big appeal to corporate technology departments, said Mr Richardson.

Mr Wookey also outlined a vision that would eventually see SAP open up its technology to allow other developers to build on-demand services that would tie into its software.

This more open approach represented "a bit of a cultural shift at SAP", he added.

"It's a big shift for any company to open up in that way," said Mr Greenbaum. "They get it, they want to do it, it's taking a little time to turn the tanker."

Dell Adds "My WiFi" Access-Point Tech to Notebooks

Dell has added the Intel "My WiFi" technology to three notebooks: the Studio 15, Studio 17, and the Studio XPS 16, the company said Tuesday.
##CONTINUE##
What is My WiFi? Put simply, it's the combination of an Intel Centrino 2 platform as well as some associated Intel software that turns your Wi-Fi client into an access point, so that others might share a single Ethernet-based Internet connection.

The technology allows up to eight Wi-Fi devices and to share files between them on a Centrino 2-based laptop running Windows Vista, according to Lionel Menchaca, who blogged about the addition for Dell.

"So what could do with My WiFi? If you're at a hotel and logged in for broadband access, you could share your connection with other Wi-Fi enabled laptops in a room, or transfer images from a Wi-Fi enabled smartphone to your laptop," Menchaca wrote. "In the home networking side, you could use it to print wirelessly or to share photos from your laptop directly to a photo frame without having to transfer the images through a cable or via an SD card. Pretty cool stuff."
