The Power of Software blog gives a very good rundown about the possibility of using small computers and processors instead of large ones like the Nehalem-EX. It mentions the Dell XS11-VX8, also called "Fortuna." The Via Nano powers Fortuna, and it's a 64-bit chip that offers hardware virtualization for Hyper-V. Amazingly, it uses only 29 watts when at full load, and 15 watts when idling, according to the blog --- less power than a UPS uses. Load up plenty of these devices and you can get plenty of computing power, while using not much electricity.
There's been talk for a while that the low-power Atom chip, used primarily to power netbooks, can be used for data centers as well. The blog points out that Microsoft Research has already built two server clusters using Atom processors controlled by the Marlowe control system that in the blog's words, "can place servers into the sleep or hibernate low power states and then wake them up. This dynamic state control enables groups of computers to respond to changes in load very rapidly."
Will you be using Atom chips and Fortuna today or in the near future to power your data center? Most likely not. But don't be surprised if you do a little further on. Just as smaller servers replaced big iron mainframes, one day devices like Fortuna and the Atom chip may power data centers, and save plenty of electricity while doing so.

Exclusive: NVIDIA Talks About GT300, 40nm, Ion and Tegra

While we weren’t able to make it to Computex ourselves, we looked for the chance to find out more about what the graphics maker is preparing in the near future, as well as the company’s opinion on the current computer industry. The opportunity was just around the corner, as NVIDIA was actively promoting its latest technologies around the world, holding press events to demonstrate some of the things that were on display at Computex. We took this opportunity and sat down for a one-on-one with the company’s Igor Stanek, Product PR Manager for our region. We wanted to go through some of the most important aspects of the manufacturer’s business, taking into consideration the latest rumors that surfaced on the Internet.
Mr. Igor Stanek was kind enough to provide us with a perspective on what NVIDIA is focusing on, as well as on what to expect from the future line of ARM-based Tegra devices. Unfortunately, we could not find anything about the much-rumored next-generation GPU architecture, allegedly called GT300, whose existence is still a mystery. However, we do have some useful insights into what is to come from NVIDIA. Now, without further ado, we will let you go through the interview itself.
NVIDIA is evolving from a company that was mainly focused on delivering graphics cards for computer enthusiasts and supporting the latest games in the industry to one that is set on providing solutions that could power a complete computer system. What can you tell us about that?
I.S: GPUs are used by gamers around the world to play the latest games at their best. GPUs though have become a power warehouse, thanks to their parallel architecture. The industry and the scientists have now realized that they can use this incredible parallel computing architecture to do other things than games. CPUs are no longer increasing in clock speed yet consumers are demanding more from their PCs today than ever before. In order to provide the much needed performance to deliver on these consumer expectations, the only path available is to go multi-core or parallel – i.e., add more cores and split demanding workloads across them. Due to the very nature of computer graphics, GPUs excel at doing many things at once and are ideally suited to this new heterogeneous computing environment. If you look at what Microsoft and Apple are working on with their new OSes you understand how GPUs are rapidly becoming the most desired chip inside the PC; the upcoming Windows 7 and Snow Leopard use GPU to full extent.
Scientists are using it to accelerate calculation by a factor they were never able to achieve before with CPUs. We consider ourselves a company that provides specific solutions to the resolution of complex problems; whether they are common or most complex ones in medical, astrophysics and more. We develop tailored solutions in different fields; one example is our Quadro business where we develop products that solve specific problems like SDI capture, multi display financial visualization. Dedicated 1U GPU racks, etc.
After seeing all those new Tegra-based and ARM-based devices at Computex this year, can you project a future where an ARM-based device can provide users with everyday computing?
I.S: It all depends on your definition of everyday computing. When you use a Tegra chip your everyday computing is not limited to typing email and surf the web; you expect things that you do on your regular PC but in a smaller footprint. These devices deliver desktop-class Internet browsing with Flash video and animation acceleration and high-definition video playback, all with cell phone-class power management – making days of HD mobile Internet experiences a reality.
Consumers are looking for an always-connected device for social media applications such as Facebook and YouTube, as well as great multimedia performance for recording and watching HD movies and videos on the go. Tegra includes an entire computer-on-a-chip, including an ARM 11 core processor, so to answer your question, yes Tegra, which includes an ARM process, is a fully capable and modern device that fits your communications and entertainment device in your pocket.
Putting that into perspective, can we think about a future without x86?
I.S: I don’t think anybody is saying x86 is out of the picture, but CPUs are losing their breath and GPUs becoming much more important. It’s very simple. Just check how much time you need for transcoding of video on ION and how powerful CPU you need to match ION speed. I think that future is in well balanced PC with CPU and GPU living in harmony. CPU will have more control tasks in operating system and GPU will be focused for most of visual computing staff including some heavy computational tasks. This is the architecture of the future. I believe that PC with 1000 USD CPU and Intel integrated graphics card is already history.
Tegra has been one of the main highlights at Computex this year. How important is Tegra for your future product lineup?
I.S: Tegra is a strategic line of products for NVIDIA. The world is going mobile and expectations are for low power always on, always connected and powerful devices that can do HD is growing rapidly.
Should we expect more Tegra devices to become available in the near future?
I.S: The response from our customers is phenomenal. Tegra is strategic to us and we have a great roadmap that we are sharing with our ecosystem, as I said our partners are extremely satisfied with performance, features and especially the low power used by these devices. We cannot announce products on behalf of our customers, but there are many coming
Do you think Microsoft will play a significant role in the adoption of Tegra?
I.S: Microsoft Windows Embedded CE is a great operating system and we support it with our Tegra devices. We do also provide support for Google Android.
Can you tell us something about the alleged GT300 that has been rumored in the media recently?
I.S: I am not aware of that code name.
What can you tell us about your next-generation chips, transitioning from 55nm to 40nm?
I.S: We don’t comment about unannounced products.
There were reports about TSMC’s problems with their 40nm manufacturing node. What can you tell us about that?
I.S: That is a question you should ask TSMC. We have new mobile parts being announced shortly that will be using 40nm process. It’s not all about process though; it’s also about efficiency of the architecture. 40nm process coupled with this efficient architecture works well for Notebooks, so we are launching this first on notebook.
During Computex AMD took the opportunity to showcase the world’s first 40nm DirectX 11 GPU, revealing a couple of videos with their next-generation solutions. How do you comment on that?
I.S: Simply, that we are thrilled about what we are working on. Stay tuned!

High-End Processors: Are They Worth All the Fuss?

iSuppli just came out with its first-quarter microprocessor market figures, and was we've all grown accustomed to by now, the numbers are not good. Overall revenues are down more than 20 percent compared with a year ago, with only low-end, notebook processors like the Atom showing any signs of life at all. The overall market, which includes everything from x86 to RISC processors, dropped from $8.6 billion in the first quarter last year to $6.9 billion in the first quarter of 2009.
Nonetheless, it was a sweet victory for AMD, at least, in that the company saw its market share inch up a bit vs. Intel. AMD's revenues contributed 12.8 percent of the overall market, a 2.3 percent gain, while Intel lost 2.5 percent to come in at 79.1 percent. While Intel continues to dominate, it is the first loss of market share for the company in four quarters. Keep in mind, though, that it still represents a net loss in sales for both companies.
While all sectors of the microprocessor industry are struggling, the high-end devices are placing the largest drag on the market. With capital budgets at top enterprises essentially frozen due to the recession, and with the success of hardware-extending technologies like virtualization, it's no surprise that top-end devices like the multicore Xeon and Opteron lines are seeing lean times.
That's why it's puzzling to see both companies waging a pitched battle in the high-end space. AMD recently introduced its six-core Opteron, the Istanbul, said to outperform the current top-of-the-line Shanghai chips by some 30 percent while keeping the same power envelope. The chips are designed for up to 8-socket servers and offer 6 MB of L3 cache and 512 KB of L2 cache per core. And by next year, the company is eyeing a 12-core device called the Magney-Cours.
These chips are intended to counter Intel's efforts in the race to load up on cores. The company is gearing up for the eight-core Nehalem EX, a 45nm device that supports up to 16 threads and 24 Mb of cache and is loaded with more than 2 billion transistors.
Clearly, these devices are aimed at weaning high-performance computing (HPC) shops off of their RISC/mainframe platforms and onto x86 clusters, but that could prove to be a risky gamble. Once the economy pulls out of recession, there will likely be an uptick in activity, but it could be quite a while before a real market re-emerges. IBM is still maintaining a comfortable mainframe business, and the technology, old as it is, shows a lot of promise in new cloud-based infrastructures. And besides, wasn't usurping the mainframe the rationale behind the Itanium?
To be fair, both companies are aggressively pursuing the laptop and mobile market: Intel with the Atom line and AMD with a new family of Neo processors aimed at the ultrathin market. But even though the margins on these lower-end devices can't possibly be as good, there's something to be said about pursuing opportunity wherever it leads.
And from the view in June 2009, it seems that expensive core enterprise systems have had their day. Low-cost endpoint hardware is where the action will be for some time to come.

Intel Scheduled to Launch Atom N450 in October

The Atom N450 (codenamed Pine Trail) will be a single core CPU with built-in northbridge functions, and will work in concert with the brand new NM10 (Tiger Point) chipset. Intel will issue the last order notice for the N270 in Q1 of 2010, and the CPU will fully phase out by Q2 of 2010.
It’s expected that the N450 will launch in October of this year at the very earliest.

China Unicom To Launch Smartphone In Late June

On the other hand, China Unicom's negotiation with Apple about the introduction of Apple's 3G iPhone into China has lasted for several months, but no official agreement has been reached. Recent rumors said that the negotiation between the two parties has not gained any substantial progress and China Unicom has lowered the priority of the introduction of the iPhone. Apple this week unveiled in the United States its latest smartphone, the iPhone 3GS.
Another Chinese telecom operator, China Mobile, has also announced plans to launch its Android-based smartphone, Ophone, in the fourth quarter of 2009. In addition, China Mobile will reportedly launch a customized mobile phone, HTC Magic, this month.

Nvidia CEO on x86 Project: "Haven't Found It Yet"

With both Intel and AMD working towards integrating GPU and CPU together, Nvidia is left standing on its own with its graphics specialty. This lead to rumors that Nvidia was looking to get into the x86 processor business and going head to head with its already-big competitors.
Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang told the New York Times that if such a project was going on at his company, he hasn’t found it yet.
“If we have such a product, I haven’t found it yet,” Mr. Huang said. “It’s just not important right now.”
Obviously even if there was work on an x86 CPU at Nvidia (and the CEO managed to find it), Huang still wouldn’t be one to reveal the news in a single interview.
If Nvidia isn’t working on a special x86 project in house, it could partner with Via Technologies, which does hold an x86 license from Intel – a key piece to the puzzle. Nvidia is rumored to be investing heavily into Via – something also denied by Huang. At any rate, we’ll know for sure at Via’s investor meeting later this month.

Intel on track to commence operations at China fab in 2010

The first batch of graduates from the Semiconductor Technology Institute, which was established under Intel's partnership with the Dalian University of Technology and the Dalian Municipal Government, will start working at Intel's operations in Dalian in 2010, according to Intel.
Intel's existing workforce of around 2,400 employees at the Chengdu site will also grow to a total of more than 3,000 by the end of 2009, after the consolidation of assembly and test lines in China, said the company. Intel's upcoming chips on 32nm and beyond will also complete backend processing at the Chengdu facility.
Industry sources have estimated Intel's investment in capacity expansion in Chengdu totals about US$450 million. The plant is expected to maximize production capacity with an annual output of around 176 million finished chips.

Nvidia ION to get 40nm refresh by year’s end

As things stand we don’t know what speeds the new Pineview processor will run at, although several rumours point to a dual-core chip which could make a big difference in netbook performance. The ION 2 is expected to release in the fourth quarter of this year, in –line with the rumoured dual core launch of Pineview and ahead of the single core Pineview launch in Q1 2010.
The benefits of ION 2 should be faster performance and a greater number of shaders with the same (or lower) power efficiency. Whilst Intel is moving from a three-chip to two-chip platform with Pine Trail, it is widely expected to support the ION/ION2 platform for future netbooks.

Intel aims to shape netbook evolution

When hardware makers build a small laptop, or netbook, based on the Atom netbook platform, they are generally bound by constraints that limit certain specifications, such as a screen size that doesn't exceed 10.2 inches. These guidelines are meant to segment the laptop market and define a product category that is different from mainstream laptops.
"They are not so much constraints. We are trying to frame the category that we're trying to encourage," said Mooly Eden, vice president and general manager of Intel's mobility group.
Cannibalization of mainstream laptop sales is also a concern. Intel doesn't want netbooks to supplant larger, more powerful laptops based on more capable -- and more expensive -- Intel processors. That has happened to some degree, with Intel estimating it accounts for approximately 20 percent of netbook sales.
Netbooks are intended for basic computing tasks, like e-mail and Web surfing. But they have grown larger and more powerful over time, and some users find them sufficiently capable to serve as their primary computers. By keeping netbook screen sizes in check, Intel wants to limit the cannibalization of laptop sales and manage user expectations.
"If you use a netbook with a bigger screen, people expect a standard notebook. The responsive of the system might be disappointing," Eden said.
That hasn't stopped other companies from trying to give Atom-based netbooks bigger screens and more computing muscle. For example, Dell sells an Atom-based laptop with a 12-inch screen, called the Mini 12, that it bills as a "laptop/netbook" and graphics chip maker Nvidia's GeForce Ion brings high-end multimedia and graphics capabilities to Atom.
Intel wasn't particularly impressed.
"You saw some people trying to experiment with Atom and a bigger screen and stuff like this. Try to open the system, open more windows. Try to open some more demanding applications, and I believe you will see the responsiveness is not what we were planning for," Eden said.
Eden believes Intel struck the right balance between computer performance and battery life with the Atom platform. In Intel's view, bigger screens and more powerful graphics chips upset that carefully constructed balance, even if some users crave these features.
This is where rivals Advanced Micro Devices and Via Technologies sense an opportunity to push their own offerings. Both companies have released chips designed for thin and light laptops with bigger screens, such as Samsung Electronics's Via Nano-based NC20 laptop and Hewlett-Packard's Pavilion dv2, which uses AMD's Athlon Neo processor.

Intel sees MIDs as intermediary of the future

Intel Corp said yesterday it remained bullish on mobile Internet devices (MID) and viewed them as a cross category between smartphones and netbooks, but with higher performance and software compatibility.
“Going into the near future, we shall see MIDs with voice capabilities, long battery life, mobile augmented reality as seen in Tom Cruise’s movie Minority Report, high-definition video, high-quality camera and constant Internet connectivity, all in a smaller package,” said Anand Chandrasekher, Intel’s ultra mobility group senior vice president and general manager, in a speech at the Computex trade show yesterday.
Demonstrating a couple of MID prototypes, Chandrasekher said future MIDs would be able to connect seamlessly all hardware peripherals and computer devices at home.
Last year, Intel introduced the Atom chip-based MID platform, codenamed Menlow, the first ground up, low power central processing unit (CPU), targeting at ultra mobile personal computers (UMPCs), MIDs and netbooks.
Intel said last October it would launch a more advanced Moorestown platform for MIDs next year.
“Moorestown, which is set to be released sometime in 2010, is on track to achieve up to 50 times idle power reduction, translating to allday computing, while reducing the board size by half, compared to its predecessor Menlow,” Chandrasekher said.
“Moorestown will be accompanied by a newer Moblin software version — the Moblin v2.0 — that is based on the Linux operating system. This software is designed specifically to deliver a greater PC-like Internet experience, while also supporting cellular voice capabilities,” he said.
Future Moorestown-based MIDs will provide dual environments such as Windows and Moblin, or even Android, he said.
The third generation of MID CPU, codenamed Medfield, is targeted at mainstream smartphones with more power reduction and is scheduled to reach to manufacturers sometime in 2011, he said.
Intel announced a short list of MID hardware and software partners working on the Moorestown platform yesterday, including Taiwan’s Quanta Computer Inc (廣達) and Inventec Appliances Corp (英華達), as well as Nordic smartphone developer Aava Mobile, UK-based storage and multimedia distributor CCI Distribution Ltd and Finland’s Elektrobit Corp, which develops embedded technology solutions for automotive and wireless industries.
Separately, Intel and Ericsson AB will cooperate in using mobile-phone technology for netbooks, helping the chipmakers benefit from the fastest-growing segment of the computer business.
Ericsson will offer a mobile-phone module that will work with Intel’s Atom chips for netbooks, Jan Backman, director of marketing for Ericsson’s mobile broadband business, said yesterday in Taipei.
“We’re recommending Intel and vice versa,” he said.
The two chipmakers will jointly design netbook technology and market their products to computer manufacturers, he said.

Is Microsoft Following GM's Road Map?

It's always shocking when a stalwart of any industry topples. It makes people pause and lay blame in a variety of directions. Some may be slightly confused that GM is not going out of business, as the taxpayers are going to now have a 60 percent stake in the company. However, many different brands we have known for years (Saturn, Pontiac, Saab, and others) will be cut loose. There are three primary reasons why GM tanked: First, GM seemed to focus a lot of attention on high-margin gas guzzlers (case in point, the Hummer). Next, GM hit some competition from Toyota and Ford (both of which seemed to be better prepared for the economic crisis). Add to that the obvious, a financial recession, and we have a bankruptcy.
Now where does Microsoft stand in comparison? Some might say Microsoft has faced a few serious bumps over the last 10 years but came out fine. Going back to Windows Me (possibly the worst of the Windows releases), it was able to rebound with Windows XP. But the Vista debacle that began in 2006 has brought along an avalanche of critique. Although I've never personally agreed with the technical complaints, the fact that there are six or more variations of the software, combined with price tags that have just gone overboard, makes the anger directed at Vista understandable. When you look at the many upgrades and varieties of Vista and now Windows 7, the slew of new System Center products, and the Xbox division (which may continue to do well with the new body controller idea), you have to ask if Microsoft is overbloating its product line. Is it stretching out in too many directions, instead of improving the core products and lowering the cost to consumers?
Some may say, "Well, Microsoft has a ton of money, so there is nothing to worry about." But Microsoft has already begun trimming the fat. Microsoft said in January that it would cut up to 5,000 positions over the next 18 months, starting with an initial 1,400-person wave. And many analysts expect that number to grow.
What about competition? So far, nothing substantial. Microsoft is actually competing with itself in many ways. Folks love Windows XP so much that they won't switch to Windows Vista, partly because they've heard it wasn't good, not because they've seen it or it's caused them any problems. Upgrades to Vista and Office 2007 have not been as plentiful as Microsoft had hoped. Windows 7 may turn it around a bit, and certainly a bouncing economy may loosen the money belt with some companies.
Apple may make a better commercial than Microsoft (even I laugh at Apple's Mac-versus-PC ads, while I grit my teeth in anger for Microsoft's Seinfeld/Gates commercials), but Mac doesn't have much traction in the enterprise space. The Mac is still a niche market, not a threat. Linux supporters have yet to unite and battle the Redmond giant. Essentially, Microsoft has one advantage over GM: The competition won't cause its downfall.
Knowing the work Microsoft developers put into their products, I believe they are the saving grace of the company -- as long as they are allowed to hear the voice of the people. This is an area where I've seen a problem. For example, when Windows Server 2008 was released, it was odd that you could not perform an Exchange 2007 backup through Windows Server 2008. You needed a separate product (Microsoft marketing encouraged the new System Center Data Protection Manager). People complained -- loudly -- on the Exchange team's Web site. They were told that Microsoft would develop a fix. That was over a year ago.
Finally, Microsoft announced at TechEd 2009 that SP2 for Exchange 2007 would contain a backup fix. The actual fix, however, is the bare minimum Microsoft could provide to satisfy the crowd but not steal any thunder away from the separately sold Data Protection Manager -- a tremendous disappointment. Now whose fault is that? If it were up to the Exchange team, I'm confident it would develop a fully functional tool, as opposed to this volume backup tool that doesn't even provide what we have in Windows Server 2003 and Exchange 2007.
Microsoft will continue to have a long and healthy life ahead if it does three things: First, adopt a new marketing strategy. Second, let its developers go crazy and really nurture their product, trimming out solutions and honing the primary pillars of Microsoft (Windows, Office, and Windows Server). Third, provide a more reasonable price tag, starting with Windows 7.

中国电信欲在上海三年实现宽带百兆到户

昨日,中国电信于上海正式启动了“城市光网”升级行动。中国电信上海公司总经理张维华表示,在未来的三年内,中国电信将提供大容量、高速率的国际通信网络,高带宽、高覆盖的接入光纤网络。而这一计划将先从工业化园区,如上海张江高科技园区开始。因为这些园区聚集地工业总产值占上海市GDP总量50%以上。
按照行动计划,预计到2012年,上海市将实现“百兆到户、千兆进楼、百万兆出口”的网络覆盖,确立上海的亚太信息通信枢纽地位。
中国电信两年内将投资60亿元建设上海“城市光网”,实施光纤宽带战略,2009年实现能力覆盖75万户,2010年覆盖达150万户,2011年覆盖达300万户以上。
为了在2012年实现上海“百万兆出口”,中国电信将投资建设亚洲新海缆、新中美海底光缆系统二期,2010年达到400万兆出口容量。
同时,结合国内出口长途传输能力提升和国际、国内卫星地面站,形成国内唯一的“海陆空”一体的国际国内数据交换枢纽,使上海成为具备覆盖五大洲光网络核心出口城市。给用户的实际体验就是大幅提高国内外的网站访问速度。
目前上海电信接入光缆和铜缆,覆盖900万户电话用户和360万宽带用户。张维华表示,结合IPTV业务发展,还会建设中国电信“统一视讯中心”,形成超过1000T(T为百万兆)以上的视频存储与处理能力。未来5年,中国电信还将提供可以基于光纤接入的“云计算”服务。

甲骨文预谋Java上网本 挑战传统硬件厂惠普戴尔

另据最新消息,甲骨文CEO拉里·埃里森(Larry Ellison)周二将自甲骨文宣布收购Sun计划以来首次就这桩交易发表公开讲话。
甲骨文发言人称,埃里森将在美国东部时间12:30(北京时间周三0:30)于旧金山召开的Sun用户大会上发表讲话。Sun创始人斯科特·麦克利尼(Scott McNealy)也将在此次会议上发言。

首款使用飞思卡尔芯片低价上网本今年上市

飞思卡尔的首席销售及营销官亨利·理查德(Henri Richard)称,飞思卡尔芯片的市场占有率可能将会达到7%。他在今天于中国台北接受采访时称:“让我们感到激动的事情是,这一领域将带来全新的潜在营收增长,因为目前我们并未在这一领域中经营业务。”
飞思卡尔的前身是摩托罗拉旗下的半导体部门,目前该公司正试图降低对汽车芯片的依赖程度,这一产品目前在其营收中约占一半比重。该公司芯片的最大用户之一通用汽车已于昨天申请了破产保护。
飞思卡尔上一季度营收同比下滑40%,促使该公司采取了关闭工厂及裁减员工的措施。
理查德称,第一款使用飞思卡尔芯片的上网本的内存将约为8GB,由一家全球性的PC厂商负责生产,但他并未透露这家厂商的具体名称。首批产品很可能将使用Ubuntu版免费Linux操作系统,此后的机型则可能使用谷歌的Android系统。

Will High-Def Voice Revive VoIP?

Jeff Pulver, who helped create one of the earliest and best-known VoIP services—Free World Dialup—is the force behind a movement to reshape VoIP, marked by the New York gathering of handset makers and others promoting high-definition voice. Like digital photography, HD DVDs, and digital TV, backers hope high-def VoIP will re-invigorate the market for IP calling.
Beyond a rallying cry for high-definition communications, the get-together outlined two paths for keeping revenue and interest focused on VoIP: discovering a new selling point and adopting the cell-phone model where new services prompt continual hardware refresh.
The convention also spawned the HD Connect marketing effort and a goal to lobby the FCC, similar to the push for new digital TV rules. Both actions stem from VoIP’s image as a "cheaper minutes" alternative to conventional phone service.
High-Def VoIP: technically speaking
To understand the push for high-definition VoIP, you need to understand the technical story behind how VoIP calls work. Although a VoIP call may originate or terminate at an IP-enabled connection, most calls traverse the traditional telephone network. Although the frequency range of a human voice can span 30 to 13000Hz, the typical PTSN network permits only 300 to 3300Hz—a narrower frequency band than an AM radio broadcast. This discrepancy commonly results in clipped speech that might not be noticed if you only used traditional telephony.
High-definition voice would expand the range of detected speech, covering 40 to 7000Hz, resulting in transmissions with more natural voice inflections. The difference between VoIP and PSTN voice quality often prompts a Skype effect, where users question why calls routed through Skype are of higher quality than other VoIP communications. The reason: Skype employs a wideband voice codec from GIPS, a sponsor of the recent HD Communications forum.
Cheap minutes a costly mistake?
"We need to turn the corner and stop talking about cheap minutes," said Daniel Berninger. Berninger heads HD Connect, the marketing effort slated to officially launch June 30. Berninger is current CEO of Free World Dialup, Pulver’s free VoIP service. Why the emphasis on cheap minutes?
"Same reason people rob banks—that is where they keep the money," Berninger told Enterprise VoIPplanet by e-mail. However, that emphasis on cheap minutes, has kept VoIP flat-footed, essentially unchanged since 1995.
That change could first appear in the enterprise, where businesses initially attracted to VoIP for cost-savings are looking beyond cheap calls.
"Originally, cost was the number one reason businesses moved to VoIP, with features and functionality becoming a distant second and third," IDC analyst Rebecca Swensen told VoIPplanet.com. Now, "features and functionality are running a tight race with costs for first place," she said.
Business may gain most from HD VoIP
Although consumers are a target audience for high-definition VoIP, the business sector may be the earliest adopters of the new technology, with the most to benefit. The areas which could be helped by better quality VoIP calls includes sales and voice conferences, according to a recent survey. Fifth-seven percent of people said conference calls would benefit most, while 32.8 percent thought video-conferencing would benefit most from HD voice, according to Global IP Solutions. GIS sponsored the HD Communications Summit.
"If the quality of the voice is not ideal, it makes doing business frustrating at the very least, and at times quite difficult," adds IDC’s Swensen.
Although call centers could benefit from HD voice, to provide the full experience customers without HD phones could use softphones with HD codecs . Not surprisingly, the handset industry is one of the most vocal proponents of HD VoIP.
Handsets go HD
In recent weeks, there has been a crush of announcements of enterprise phones adopting HD features. Polycom, maker of enterprise-ready speakerphones, announced in May the VVX 1500C, an HD Voice handset certified with Cisco’s Unified Communications Manager. Cisco also updated its SPA525G IP phone with a HD voice codec.
Other companies are exploring softphones, enabling HD VoIP without a physical HD phone. Possibly gaining most attention was Skype, offering royalty-free access to SILK, its HD voice codec.
Can HD "refresh" the VoIP market?
The introduction of new handsets and codecs mirrors what Pulver says could mean "billions" in a few years, as businesses and consumers buy new handsets and software much the way we buy a new cell phone every 90 days to stay current with the latest services.
And in the early adoption of HD VoIP, businesses could lead the pack toward a VoIP refresh.
"I gather the business market is much more likely to completely overhaul their phones for HD than the consumer market," said Swensen.
Buying new hardware could also help the telecom industry living on the knife-edge of razor-thin profits due to VoIP. "Interest in HD means refresh of telecom Infrastructure," Berninger told Enterprise VoIP Planet.
Telecom’s new rival: Twitter?
The final piece of the HD VoIP puzzle has yet been put in place. While France Telecom’s Orange and other European carriers have pledged to adopt HD Voice later this year, still silent are U.S. carriers. However, they may be pushed toward HD voice by an unlikely competitor: Twitter.

The sources close to Globalfoundries have also confirmed that the company will be ready to take the customers orders in middle 2010 but the first chips won’t be out by early 2011.
The fact that the company has SRAM test chips showcased at Computex means that they are very snatching some TSMC customers away and trying to win some money.
The “separation” of AMD and its manufacturing fabs will definitely put more pressure on TSMC and we definitely stand that competition is a great thing, and it will make lazy TSMC push harder to keep its existing customers.
