Making Quantitative Sense of the Social Web

My last column offered three things to help you get started with social media based marketing: being clear about your business objectives, knowing your audience, and picking specific starting point. In this column I'll offer one more "to do." In response to e-mail, this column will address measuring the impact of the social Web on your business and using what you learn to move forward.
##CONTINUE##
Quantifying the Conversation

The starting point for measurement as it applies to understanding social media, perhaps surprisingly, has little if anything to do with your campaigns. Instead, it's about understanding the conversations. Compare the social Web with broadcast, print, direct mail, or interruptive digital media (e.g., display ads and pop-ups). Measuring the latter is straightforward: count the number of outbound communications you pushed into a selected channel and determine the extent to which you delivered those impressions against your planned or target audience. It's not at all trivial, but you do have the benefit of years of experience and established best practices available through certified and proven firms.

Measuring conversations, however, is a different matter. You've a great set of tools, such as Google Alerts and TweetDeck's search capability. In a matter of minutes, you can set up real-time monitoring of your brand, product, or service on Twitter using DIY tools from such companies as Techrigy, Collective Intellect, and Radian6. Or try full-service offerings, like BlogPulse and Cymfony platforms. By using tools like these, establishing conversation basics is within your grasp. That said, you've still got a more significant challenge ahead of you: making quantitative sense of what is inherently qualitative data. For example, consider this tweet about Southwest Airlines, including an uploaded photo: "New 737 being delivered to Southwest Airlines."

What are you supposed to make of this, other than wondering what type of truck they unloaded an airplane from? Still, it's worth something to know that people are interested enough in your company that they'd take a picture of your new plane and share it.

Social listening tools help you make sense of qualitative data by performing basic relevance analysis, quantifying how often your brand is mentioned in the context of specific search terms, for example, and the extent to which those references are positive or negative. Going further, tools like Techrigy's SM2 will give you a cut on the actual sources of data: is your audience blogging, using Twitter, or both? You can use this data to steer your outreach campaigns and cover holes in your social-media-based marketing efforts.

Measuring Tactical Efforts

Getting a bit closer to your actual business, tools like Facebook's Insights provide data that quantify the value of your business presence on a social network and your associated advertising program. Using Facebook's ad manager, you can quickly set up campaigns that target very specific slices of Facebook's massive audience. Even better, using the Insights tools, you can see who actually visited your page or clicked on your ads and establish a quantitative understanding of this platform's value to your business.

Using your own business analytics data, you can extend this analysis deeper into your social media efforts. Compare your customer relationship management data with the conversational data you uncover. You'll gain direct insights into how what is being said about you is driving your business. Because people tend to build on what others talk about, you'll see the conversations forming on the social Web. It's quite likely, then, that you'll also find questions relating to these conversations showing up in customer service. The social Web is a sort of early warning system for attentive marketers.

Software platform vendors, including nGenera, are developing integrated solutions that recognize the links between the social Web and the enterprise. CustomerThink's CEO, Bob Thompson, references nGenera EVP Brian Magierski as he describes the increasing integration between customer service and community data.

Take together, these disparate data sources -- think silos and the need to eradicate them -- can go a long way toward moving your business forward as you learn to navigate the social Web and extract the business value of the information it has to offer.

Assessing Strategic Progress

By combining tactical measures and conversational data, you can come up with a way to determine the ROI (define) for your strategic efforts. If this seems a stretch, consider this: if you tracked applicable social conversations over time and could show that shifts in conversational tonality correlated strongly with the expenses incurred in product returns and associated service outlays, wouldn't you adopt this as a strategic measure and integrate this into your business dashboard? I would.

Now add in the Net Promoter Score (NPS) and take the conversational data down to the individual conversation level. Not only do you have long-term sustainability benefits (think "green" as in profits here) of the NPS methodology, using the listening platforms you can spot the primary sources of influence and prioritize your efforts in responding to and leveraging what you learn. Looked at that way, it's a pretty short step to proving real value, all gained essentially though nothing more than listening to your customers when they talk between themselves and then translating that talk into action, inside your firm.

Tying It All Together

By taking the time to listen and measure -- and reorienting your enterprise to respond to customer data rather than defend itself against it -- it's possible to navigate directly into favorable winds, so to speak, to move your firm forward and into alignment with the things your customers find valuable and talk-worthy. That's a double win and a guaranteed competitive strength. Take advantage of the current economic conditions. Tough as they may be, now is the time to put a few paces between your team and runners coming up behind. It all starts with measurement.

Social Networks That Boost Your Business

Most people are familiar with the term "Web 2.0," which refers to a second generation of web development and design that focuses on fostering social networking via the web. Innovative companies are beginning to embrace Web 2.0 as a way to enhance communication, information sharing, and collaboration, thereby allowing them to work smarter rather than harder. The business use of Web 2.0 represents a new trend called "Business 2.0." Aside from being the name of a defunct magazine, Business 2.0 is about using the new web-based social networking applications (many of which were originally created for personal use) in a way that fosters teamwork, customer touches, and internal and external collaboration in a low-cost seamless way.
##CONTINUE##
Unfortunately, many businesses feel that Web 2.0 and social networking are for the younger generation and a waste of time when used by employees. However, once you understand the power of these applications and how to use them in your company, you'll quickly find that they can be invaluable tools to boost your bottom line.

Following is an overview of the best Business 2.0 tools.

Personal Tools with Business Applicability

· Facebook

Personal use: Facebook enables you to connect and share with the people in your life. Users can join networks organized by city, workplace, school, and region to connect and interact with others. People can add friends, send them messages, and update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves.

Business 2.0 use: Large organizations can connect all of their employees, or members, with Facebook. Some are finding an added advantage of using an internal, secure version of Facebook. This has helped organizations to dramatically increase their internal networking and collaboration. Ask yourself: Could we use Facebook, or our own internal version, to get people to collaborate at a higher level?

· Twitter

Personal use: Twitter is a micro-blogging service that allows friends, family, and co-workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of short, quick answers using no more than 140 characters per message. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or co-workers. Users can receive updates via the Twitter website or other social networking sights such as Facebook. Young people use Twitter for answering the question: What are you doing?

Business 2.0 use: Business users could change that question to: What problem are you trying to solve? Several companies have used this as a fast way to solve problems. Hotels, airlines, and airports are using Twitter to pitch services, travel updates, and respond to travelers needs. Ask yourself: Could we use Twitter to solve problems faster with our organization or our customers?

· Wikipedia

Personal use: Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia that anyone can use to find information on virtually any topic. Anyone can edit the content as well.

Business 2.0 use: A large manufacturing company with engineers in locations around the world increased problem solving and collaboration by creating an internal, secure version of Wikipedia for sharing information on parts and service offerings as well as repair and maintenance instructions. Retailers and suppliers could create a version of Wikipedia to foster education and training as well as enhanced information sharing.

Ask yourself: Could we create an internal version of Wikipedia to foster better information and knowledge sharing?

· YouTube

Personal use: YouTube is a video sharing website where users can upload, view, and share video clips. YouTube displays a wide variety of user-generated video content as well as movie clips, product demonstrations, and commercials. Unregistered users can watch the videos, while registered users can upload an unlimited number of videos.

Business 2.0 use: Businesses are posting humorous commercial videos to generate interest in their products with great success. The more entertaining it is, the more people watch it. Business partners could create a YouTube like channel for the purpose of educating and training. Ask Yourself: Could we enhance our marketing efforts as well as general communication by using YouTube?

· Digg

Personal use: Digg is a social news web site made for people to discover and share content from anywhere on the Internet, by submitting and accessing links and stories. Voting stories thumbs up or a thumb down is the site's cornerstone function, respectively called digging and burying.

Business 2.0 use: Many organizations have found this to be a good way to track the most interesting advances in technology or the most useful business news. Large organizations can create their own internal version for sharing what employees consider to be the most useful information. Ask yourself: Could we use Digg, or our own internal version, to get people to share their most interesting and valuable web-based information with each other?

· Delicious

Personal use: Delicious is a social bookmarking web service for storing, sharing, and discovering web bookmarks. It uses a non-hierarchical classification system in which users can tag each of their bookmarks with freely chosen index terms.

Business 2.0 use: Business users can share their most useful websites with co-workers or business partners. If a customer purchases a product, sellers could share relevant bookmarks that keep the customer coming back for more information and hopefully more products. Ask yourself: Could we use Delicious to share important new web sites faster within our organization or with our customers?

· Visual Communications

Personal use: Visual Communications, unlike traditional video conferencing, uses your desktop, laptop, and soon your smart phone to hold a quick, anytime, anywhere videoconference with one or more other people. Travelers who must be away from home are using their laptops in hotel rooms with broadband access and free software such as Skype and AIM to communicate with family and friends to enhance their personal connection.

Business 2.0 use: Businesses are discovering the power of Visual Communications to enhance the connection with their sales force, business partners, and customers.

Ask yourself: Could we use Visual Communications to enhance communications internally and externally?

Purely Business 2.0 Tools

· Wiki

A Wiki is a collaborative web page or collection of web pages designed to enable anyone to create a quick web page that allows visitors to search the Wiki's content and edit the content in real time, as well as view updates since their last visit. Wikis are often used to create collaborative Web sites and to power community websites. On a moderated Wiki, Wiki owners review comments before additions to the main body of the topic. Additional features include calendar sharing, live AV conferencing, RSS feeds, and more.

Ask yourself: Could we use Wikis to enhance internal and external collaboration?

· LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a business-oriented professional networking website for exchanging information, ideas, and opportunities. There are over 35 million registered users spanning 170 industries actively networking with each other. For example, large insurance companies use LinkedIn to foster networking with their independent sales representatives. HR professionals from all over the world could use LinkedIn to share best practices.

Ask Yourself: Could we use LinkedIn to expand our organizational network for enhanced knowledge sharing?

· Cloud Computing & Software As A Service

In Cloud Computing, some or all of the storage, software, IT processes, and data center facilities you use can exist on your provider's server, which is maintained and cared for by your provider, giving you 24/7 access from any device anywhere. The cost of upgrading hardware and software, maintenance, and associated IT labor costs can be dramatically reduced or eliminated. Currently, the ideal organization would be any size company that's facing big investments in computing and communications infrastructure. For example, Amazon.com can give you an entire e-commerce back end. Software as a Service (SaaS) such as SalesForce.com has a CRM package, SciQuest has a spend management package, and Google, Microsoft and others have a suite of offerings.

Ask yourself: Could we use Cloud Computing & Software as a service to streamline our IT needs?

Gain a New Competitive Advantage

By reframing the use of social networking technology, companies can increase communication, collaboration, problem solving, and competitive advantage with little cost. Remember, many of these tools are free or nearly free, making them accessible to even the smallest of businesses. Therefore, the sooner you embrace Business 2.0 and put it to work for you, the faster you can penetrate new markets and win the lion's share of business.

##CONTINUE##

##CONTINUE##

##CONTINUE##

##CONTINUE##

Facebook

方式A:可以在首页及两侧刊登传统的文字图示广告;
方式B:植入式品牌广告,比如开心网的争车位中放置福特新嘉年华的广告车型,在买房子中内置了万科房地产的广告楼盘;

方式A:类似于腾讯的QQ秀,比如51.com的个性主页定制;
方式B:虚拟物品买卖,比如校内网可以通过充值虚拟币紫豆,来购买一些高级礼品赠送给好友;

##CONTINUE##

Web 2.0: Managing Corporate Reputations

Companies are scrambling to silence errant messages while exploiting social networks
##CONTINUE##
Zachary Weiner, the CEO of Chicago boutique ad agency Luxuryreach, has had quite a time in social networking land of late. Recent adventures include employees twittering about how demanding Weiner is, how hung over they feel, and how "totally not into" the client they are. Then there's the worker and her boyfriend who are lobbing character assassinations, sexual insults, and details of their therapy sessions at each other on Facebook. "I can't lie, I'd almost like to hear how it ends," says Weiner. "It's entertaining."

Entertaining, yes. But for executives worried about their companies' reputations, oh so terrifying. Every day it seems there's yet another social networking scandal breaking out, like the viral sensation of the woman who tweeted: "Cisco just offered me a job! Now I have to weigh the utility of a fatty paycheck against the daily commute to San Jose and hating the work." Or the Ketchum public-relations exec who said of client FedEx's (FDX) hometown: "I would die if I had to live here!"

Social networking is a love-hate relationship. On the one hand managers want their workers to experiment so they can cultivate new-world skills. Employees as brand ambassadors! Products virally transformed into overnight hits! On the other hand, bosses are filled with foreboding about social networking's dark side—losing secrets to rivals, the corporate embarrassment of errant employee tweets, becoming the latest victim of a venomous crowd. "Employees are saying, 'I need these solutions to be productive,' and the security and legal guys are saying, 'This could really explode, and we could really have a problem on our hands,' " says Intel (INTC) Chief Information Officer Diane Bryant. "You can talk yourself into all sorts of doomsday scenarios."

IBM's Guidelines

That's why many companies are formulating policies that seek to strike the right balance. Some, like Enterprise Rent-A-Car, block employee access to certain social sites. Enterprise also keeps a sharp eye out for employees' online musings. "If you mention the company or [a fellow] employee in a post, chances are someone will see it," says Christy Conrad, vice-president for corporate communications. Her team relies on Google (GOOG) Alerts to get updates each time someone includes certain words in a post. Other companies, such as Zappos.com, take a laissez-faire approach.

For a sense of how to manage the process, it's instructive to take a look at IBM (IBM). In 2005, seeing hundreds of its employees taking to blogging in their downtime, IBM drafted a set of "social computing guidelines" that has since grown to cover employee activity on sites like Twitter and Facebook. These guardrails urge employees to be up-front about their identities, remember that they are personally responsible for what they publish, and to take a breath before hitting send. They also remind them to "stay away from controversial topics that aren't related to your IBM role," notes Gina Poole, vice-president for social software.

While many see Twitter as a place to indulge one's inner self, IBM wants employees to "add value" in all their online postings. "You're building your social reputation, so you don't want to be a frivolous or an uninteresting person," says Poole. "If you're just saying, 'I had pancakes for breakfast,' it doesn't really add value."

"People Aren't Thinking"

But even the brawniest of policies can't prevent what executives at Intel call "escapes" (translation: undesired events such as an employee going off the reservation). "It's the Wild, Wild West," says Intel's Bryant. "As more and more people [use social networking sites], you have to be more active in reminding people of their obligations." Case in point: Bryant got an emergency call on her cell phone on Apr. 14 about a high-risk escape: An Intel employee had set up a chat room outside the company firewall to discuss an Intel earnings call as it was unfolding that day. The crisis management team kicked into high gear. "People aren't thinking," says Bryant. "We have had to go out and reinforce that you are still expected to abide by [Intel's] code of conduct."

Like many companies, Intel has software that acts as an automated SWAT team scouring the online world for intellectual property and personal information. Once, companies were only capable of filtering for Web sites. Now, with new security products from companies like Websense and Barracuda Networks, they can search content, right down to individual posts. Some employers are also hiring firms like Cyveillance, which charges companies upwards of $100,000 a year to troll social networks for confidential or damaging leaks.

It's the horror stories that give many pause. Generally, employers can discipline and fire workers for their Internet airings. Virgin Atlantic canned a cabin crew for dissing passengers and joking about faulty jet engines. But that's not the solace it once was. "When someone is fired because of Web 2.0 activity, they're not going to hide in a hole," says Philip Gordon, a partner at law firm Littler Mendelson. "They're going to wear it as a badge of honor and turn it into a career."

Even as companies scramble to protect themselves, they understand that social networking is fast becoming the way people and companies collaborate and find new businesses. That's one reason General Electric (GE) deployed a Tweet Squad this month. Modeled on Best Buy's (BBY) Geek Squad, it is made up of 10 fresh-faced employees who help GE's boomers and Gen-Xers become fluent social networkers. Meanwhile, companies are working furiously to deploy their own social networking tools behind the company firewall. The idea is to bring some of what's happening on the outside inside. These so-called enterprise social networks hold big promise: a searchable, digital archive of all the happenings and knowledge inside a company. The dream is for these social media worlds to double up one day as a kind of virtual headquarters.

This month insurer MetLife (MET) deployed just such an internal social network collaboration tool called connect.MetLife. Employees who log onto the site see a page that looks similar to what they're used to seeing on Facebook. "Except," says Jeanette Scampas, MetLife's executive vice-president for information technology, "ours looks better."

##CONTINUE##

##CONTINUE##

##CONTINUE##

Huawei Launches SNS Website In China

Chinese telecommunications solutions provider Huawei has launched its social networking service website Aimi.com which targets Chinese white-collar netizens, marking Huawei's formal entry into the Internet business.
##CONTINUE##
By looking at the settings of this website, Aimi.com's positioning is to satisfy the entertainment demands of its high-level users. The interface of Aimi.com is just like those of other popular community websites run by rivals like Oak Pacific Interactive and its functions include photo albums, blogs, group creation, and voting in polls.

The domain name information of the website shows that the domain name, which was registered in 2000, changed ownership in 2008 and it currently belongs to Huawei.

Huawei previously signed a CNY100 million network equipment service agreement with the Chinese SNS website 51.com in February 2009. Under the agreement, Huawei will provide a complete set of network services to 51.com to enhance the latter's network equipment and machine room construction. At that time, many industry insiders presciently said that it was Huawei's preparation for its entry into the Internet industry.

Social networking as the next business horizon

Business leaders who shake their heads at a younger generation whittling away hours on any number of increasing social networking sites had better take heed because the social networking revolution is good business and is well on its way to becoming a business necessity, according to author and academic Soumitra Dutta.
##CONTINUE##
Dutta and Matthew Fraser, both from INSEAD business school in Fontainebleau Cedex, France, have written a book on the topic titled, “Throwing Sheep in the Boardroom: How Online Social Networking Will Transform Your Life, Work and World.” The book examines the powerful trend of the Web 2.0 social networking revolution in a number of areas, including politics, music and business. It argues that while the Web 2.0 revolution has become de facto for younger members of society, it is facing resistance inside organizations – especially corporations and government bureaucracies and makes the case that senior executives must embrace and understand the dynamics of the Web 2.0 revolution “before it’s too late” and “before it will be sweeping their corridors and into their boardrooms.”

The “throwing sheep” of the title refers to a Facebook application that users utilize to get other members attention with a quick note.

As a chaired professor of business, professor of information systems and faculty director of elab@INSEAD, the school’s initiative in building a center for teaching and research in the digital economy in collaboration with companies such as Morgan Stanley, SAP, Cisco Systems Inc. and Intel Corp., Dutta is perfectly situated to examine the interaction between online social networking and the business world. He joined INSEAD in 1989 after working for Schlumberger Ltd. in Japan and General Electric Co. in the United States. He has also authored close to a dozen books, many focusing on the intersection between business and technology, including “The Global Information Technology Report 2007-2008,” “The Bright Stuff,” “Embracing the Net,” and “Process Reengineering, Organizational Change and Performance Improvement.”

Dutta, who has a doctoral degree in computer science and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of California at Berkeley, as well as a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, recently completed a short book tour of the United States with stops in New York and Boston. He spoke to the IndUS Business Journal during his Boston stop.

When directly applying the Web 2.0 social networking explosion to the business world, Dutta points toward four factors: branding, engaging, learning and leading.

Dutta says that when businesses embrace social networking they can bring their brand to a different audience. However, businesses must realize that it is a different method of branding that is less structured and more open than traditional outlets to the public, such as print or television advertising.

“You have to make people passionate about you and the way you make people passionate about you is you become more open,” he said.

Instead of having a business image as perfected, flawless and on high, Dutta believes in the social networking arena businesses and executives must come down to the people and be genuine with more transparency and less reliance on perfected, public-relations driven images.

“The traditional model is you portray your strengths, not your weakness,” he said. “In Web 2.0 culture you have to portray both – you have to be more open. People don’t want to see the sanitized version of you.”

Dutta strongly believes that social networking allows businesses to engage both its employees and customers more than ever before. This approach calls for a drastic rethinking of company values and approaches to input on both business execution and products. Whereas research and development and innovation have traditional been closed activities, they are increasingly becoming more open and succeeding through an inclusive approach that takes in views from all levels of a company and customers.

“[Social networking] technologies provide you with a way to engage customers and employees,” Dutta said. “You have to bring in new ideas from the outside … and this open innovation can be tremendously enabled by new social networking technologies.”

Social networking tools such as blogs and wikis provide a quick and direct avenue for feedback and the business world is increasingly becoming one in which product success is driven by online chatter – companies that fail to estimate the weight of such public opinion should expect consequences, he added.

Social networking has also changed the learning environment, shifting the seat of information from traditional purveyors of information such as the media and professional organizations to a larger, less-controlled global forum. The challenge is for businesses to continue to drive information on their products and services put to also be open to learning about other views and figure out a way to integrate information from outside the organization, according to Dutta.

Businesses and their leaders are now being challenged on their assertions and positions of authority.

“It requires a certain level of humanity to accept that someone else might know better and that you don’t know it all,” Dutta said. “However, the most important change being driven by these things is a shift in values.”

Businesses have typically valued information and innovation that is private and secret, but now public knowledge and information has a heavier weight, he added. Business interaction through Blogs, Facebook and other social media are now being accepted as normal and good. “The value in terms of openness is changing,” said Dutta.

He points to the increasing number of chief executive officers at large companies blogging and interacting with the public as an example. In addition, the straightforwardness of executive blogs, often addressing personal issues and opinions, is a marked change. “Maybe you want to expose personal challenges now,” Dutta said. “The boundaries are shifting out there.”

In addition to social networking’s effect on business leadership it is also having an impact on market leadership. “Today what is happening is power is much more diffused, both inside and outside the company,” Dutta said.

Whereas in the past, market leadership was much more defined by title and position social networking has broken down the barrier and brought decision-making down to the bottom level, he added. For example, Dutta points to the pharmaceutical industry, which has always relied on influencing doctors to prescribe certain drugs to tilt the direction of demand. Now bloggers and “moms” have just as much control in building momentum and popularity for certain drugs over others, according to Dutta.

The twists and turns social networking is causing in the business world are almost endless and Dutta does not expect that to change. Over the next five years, he expects to see a continued focus on the shifting values of openness and transparency, and a more definite measure for how this impacts the business world.

So just how does a business embrace social networking?

For Dutta, the first step is clear: companies must begin with strategy. The strategy must be to embrace Web 2.0 social networking, encourage horizontal collaboration and harness the power of collective intelligence to boost productivity.

“The interaction between people and customers is the strategy,” he said. “If you look at the social media state there is a lot of interaction between people and the customers because you are, in effect, one team.”

Will you swing on Microsoft's Vine?

Ban those dirty thoughts! It's a new Twitter-competitor from Microsoft.
##CONTINUE##
Vine is an upcoming service from Microsoft, soon to be launched as a public beta, that is part mini-social site, part Twitter and part emergency comms network. Vine works on the .Net Framework and lets you link up with close friends and family to form a group. The group can then interact, send messages and see where events are occuring in a map-based, IM-like, screen. Pertinent news updates can be received and passed to the group when local relevant events occur.

You can set up your Vine application to send and receive messages to and from different groups (be it an office group, sports team or alternate bunch of friends) in different ways; by email, text message, Facebook or other social service. This ties Vine into your general PC usage. So far, so normal. Where it could step out from other products is the map screen that offers location-based information for group members and events. It is easy enough to generate maps from tweets and other sources, but a highly personalised one could be something new and more useful.

Naturally enough, the information from the initial closed beta has an all-American focus, so weather events from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, be they tornadoes, floods or heavy snow and other potential disasters can be fed through to users in the appropriate region. However, if the app spreads worldwide it would not hard to tie into local services, including traffic, power outages, surf conditions or political upheaval, wherever you may be in the world.

As Micosoft tries to generate money from its Live offerings, it seems there will be a basic free edition of Vine with additional features, most likely aimed at business, available for paying users. If you feel overwhelmed by the flood of Tweets on Twitter, Vine may offer a more relaxed, friendly and personal environment for you to contact family and, if things turn nasty, it might provide a more reliable source of information in an emergency. The beta is open for a limited number of users and opens in May.

##CONTINUE##

Oak Pacific Prepares For Third SNS Website In China

Chinese social networking service developer Oak Pacific Interactive, the owner of Xiaonei.com and Kaixin.com, is reportedly preparing for the launch of its third SNS website, Hi.mop.com.
##CONTINUE##
The login interface of Hi.mop.com is similar with those of other Chinese SNS websites and the registration function of the website has already opened to the public. Users can also login with their forum usernames of Mop.com, a portal website of Oak Pacific Interactive.

According to local media reports, the costs of Hi.mop.com will not be high, because Oak Pacific Interactive can directly transfer its technologies from Xiaonei.com and Kaixin.com. But though it is believed that Oak Pacific Interactive plans to integrate the contents of Mop.com via this website, there is currently no special function available on Hi.mop.com to connect it to the forum of Mop.com.

So far, Oak Pacific Interactive has not given any comment on Hi.mop.com and its public relations department reportedly said they did not know the details.

Facebooks opens door wider to third party devs with new API

Facebook has announced that it has launched an Open Stream API that will allow third-party developers to make use of the scads of data that users pump into Facebook every day. Soon, we could have Facebook clients that can filter, mix, and post comments on feed items.
##CONTINUE##
Facebook has launched an API for its activity stream, making it possible for third parties to create software and services that allow users to directly interact with their streams without visiting Facebook. The Facebook Open Stream API will not only allow client applications to display a user's stream, it will also allow them to filter, mix, and even post comments to various feed items.

For those of you who aren't addicted to Facebook, the activity stream is the Twitter-like list of feed items that displays on your Facebook home page, made up of updates from all of your Facebook friends. Things that they are doing, groups they have joined, relationships they have entered or left, events they are attending, photos they have posted, and more are all part of this stream that will be incorporated into the Open Stream API.

As part of the announcement, Facebook also said that the Open Stream API would comply with the new Activity Streams standard, which is an extension of the Atom feed format. The decision to go with Activity Streams instead of its own format is significant, as Facebook's adoption of the developing standard will help give it the boost it needs to make it to the bigtime.

"Over the last several months, we've been collaborating with the community, hosting meetups at Facebook headquarters, and speaking at industry events about Activity Streams and the open stack," Facebook said in a statement. "We think that working alongside our peers to create an open standard for accessing and consuming streams is the future. We'll continue to make contributions to the standards community and related technologies and are happy to be one of the first companies to implement Activity Streams at scale."

Facebook says that it has already gathered a handful of beta partners to test the new API, including Seesmic Desktop and Adobe with its (infamous?) AIR framework. Perhaps once developers get down and dirty with the API, we might see the proliferation of third-party Facebook clients like we already have with Twitter clients.

Check back with us on Tuesday, when we'll be taking a closer look at the API itself and the Activity Streams draft, as well as their implications for client implementations.

CR-Nielsen Releases Ranking List Of Chinese SNS Websites

CR-Nielsen, the Chinese joint venture of the international market research firm Nielsen, has published the latest statistics of the most popular social networking services websites in China, with 51.com tops the ranking list by weekly independent visits of 14 million people.
##CONTINUE##
According to the report, from December 1 to December 28, 2008, Chinese domestic SNS websites 51.com, Xiaonei.com, Chinaren.com, and Kaixin001.com won the first four places of the ranking list with weekly independent visits of 14 million, 9.5 million, 7 million, and 3.5 million, respectively.

Foreign SNS websites such as Myspace.cn, 360quan.com, and Cyworld.com.cn list at the fifth, the ninth, and the tenth positions with weekly independent visits of two million, 900,000, and 800,000.

The rest are 5460.net, Wangyou.com, and Ipart.cn, ranking from the sixth to the eighth, and all these three websites claim the weekly independent visits of about one million.

In addition, Tencent's SNS website Q-zone, which says over 200 million users login its website every month, is not included in the top ten SNS websites in China.

CR-Nielsen says though there are a large number of SNS websites in China, those from the United States are not able to occupy the dominant positions in the Chinese market, due to the culture and language differences and the limits of system and regulations.
