Sony Ericsson Weighs In On Android

The company is in no rush to release an Android smartphone, as it's focusing on creating a unique user experience and user interface.
##CONTINUE##
Sony (NYSE: SNE) Ericsson said it's committed to creating an Android-powered smartphone, but it will be taking its time to ensure its handset is differentiated from competitors.

When the cell phone manufacturer joined the Open Handset Alliance last year, it raised hopes for Android fans because Sony Ericsson is known for producing well-designed phones. But executives from Sony Ericsson said they aren't in a rush to get a device out to market, and it would be "some time" before they released an Android-powered smartphone.

"It does require a lot of evaluation, as well as a lot of testing, a lot of acceptance from a consumer viewpoint, and there is still some time to go," said CEO Hideki Komiyama in an interview with Reuters. "Looking ahead I think that we see this as one of the important operating systems, there is no doubt."

The company wants to create a unique user experience and user interface for its Android device, Komiyama said. This is possible because the Linux-based operating system is open source, and it could help Sony Ericsson's smartphone stand out from offerings by rivals like Samsung, HTC, Motorola (NYSE: MOT), and Asus-Garmin (NSDQ: GRMN).

The Google (NSDQ: GOOG)-backed mobile operating system is still popular with developers, but it doesn't have a huge adoption rate among consumers because the T-Mobile G1 is the only commercially available handset. That could change by the end of the year though, as many expect a slate of Android smartphones to hit the market.

Sony Ericsson needs a hit handset because it is reeling from the economic slowdown, and it recently lost $387 million in the first quarter. It will not rely on Android alone though, as it will continue to make smartphones with Windows Mobile and Symbian.

Sony Developing Cloud Gaming System?

A new patent filing hints at a potential new Sony gaming solution.
##CONTINUE##
Ever since the remote gaming service OnLive was announced, the industry has been abuzz about the potential applications of server-based gaming and how the concept could become the future of gaming. Despite the extensive media exposure for OnLive, gaming mainliners Microsoft and Sony have commented little on the subject of server-based gaming, however, according to a new patent filing, Sony may be the first to strike back with a remote gaming service of their own.

Sony Entertainment Japan recently registered a trademark for PS Cloud, a product or service expected to be Sony's venture into cloud-based gaming. As you would imagine, Sony has not formally recognized the filing nor commented on its intended applications, however, speculation has already begun, most of which centers around the most seemingly viable application -- a system that allows gamers to play and save games to a user account from any PlayStation 3.

This may just be a precautionary move on Sony's part to combat competitors like OnLive, so we're taking the patent filing with a grain of salt.

Nevertheless, the prospect seems promising. Would you be interested in a PlayStation-branded remote server system? What type of features would you want it to offer? Share your comments below.

Crisis Call: Is Sony Ericsson Heading for Divorce?

Sometimes it's easier to stay in a troubled marriage than to undergo a costly and messy separation.
##CONTINUE##
Consider Sony Ericsson, the world's fifth-largest maker of mobile phones. The eight-year-old joint venture between Japanese consumer electronics giant Sony and Swedish telecom equipment maker Ericsson, has weathered more than its share of ups and downs. But now, with sales tanking and losses soaring, rumors abound that one--if not both--of the companies may be pushing for a breakup.

Both partners insist divorce isn't an option. Even after Sony Ericsson warned on Mar. 20, 2009 that first-quarter shipments would be down by nearly half from the previous quarter and that losses could be as high as US$530 million, the two parents continued to affirm their commitment to the venture.

"Sony and Ericsson are determined to work with Sony Ericsson's management team to turn the situation around and return the company to profitability," the companies said in a joint statement.

That's a huge challenge. To give Sony Ericsson a chance to engineer a turnaround by 2010 will require an infusion of at least US$1.4 billion in additional capital, figures brokerage Nomura International. Without it, the company could burn through most of its current US$1.6 billion cash pile as soon as August, estimates Richard Windsor, Nomura's global technology specialist in London. "The situation at Sony Ericsson is relatively precarious," Windsor says. "The perception is that it could easily become the next Motorola."

Midrange handset sales are plunging
That's a far cry from where Sony Ericsson was as recently as two years ago. After a rocky start to the joint venture, the company's hip brand image and products such as the Cybershot camera phones and Walkman range of handsets proved popular with consumers, helping to propel it to the No. 3 position among cell-phone makers for a brief period in 2008.

But success was short-lived. Last year, as weakening economies started to take a bite out of sales, the global handset market grew by just 3.6 percent--and Sony Ericsson's volume fell by nearly 7 percent. This year, "the global handset market is expected to shrink between 10 percent and 15 percent, and it's the midrange segment of the handset market--the area where Sony Ericsson has traditionally been the strongest--that will be hit the hardest," says Nomura International executive director Stuart Jeffrey.

One reason: It isn't enough these days just to offer imaging and music. Witness the success of the Apple iPhone, with its slick features and über-cool brand image. "Touch screens, GPS, Internet browsing, and social networking are the hot areas of the handset business and Sony Ericsson has not made significant inroads into any of them," says Carolina Milanesi, research director for mobile devices at telecom consultancy Gartner in London.

U.S. operations chief just quit
A big part of Sony Ericsson's current problem, analysts say, is that it has built the wrong portfolio of handsets. The mobile market has become increasingly polarized around ultra-basic devices such as the US$50 Nokia 2600 and high-end smartphones like the BlackBerry, iPhone, or Nokia N96. Yet Sony Ericsson has remained firmly mid-market.

The company has tried to move upscale, but with only limited success. Last year it launched a pricey smartphone called the Xperia built around the mobile version of Microsoft Windows. Although the device was mainly aimed at the U.S. market, where Windows Mobile has a stronger following, Sony Ericsson hasn't yet managed to persuade either T-Mobile or AT&T Wireless--the two main GSM mobile operators in the United States--to offer it. Analysts speculate such problems may be one reason Najmi Jarwala, president of Sony Ericsson's U.S. operations, announced on Mar. 23 that he was leaving the company "for personal reasons".

Sony Ericsson says it has taken action to pare back the number of mid-priced models in its portfolio and to invest in higher-end devices. It aims to introduce a range of gizmos using a variety of operating systems, including Windows, the Android platform from Google and the Symbian OS from London-based Symbian.

A US$1.5B loss this year?
A greater commitment to smartphones makes sense. The pocket-sized computer-like devices are expected to account for around 17 percent of all handsets shipped this year, according to Tina Teng, a Los Angeles-based senior wireless communications analyst with market researcher iSuppli. Despite the global downturn and expected overall decline in cell phone sales this year, smartphone sales are expected to grow by an average of 21 percent a year through 2013, Teng says.

But launching a range of new smartphones will take money and time. If drastic changes are not made, Sony Ericsson might lose as much as US$1.5 billion this year, RBS Capital Markets analyst Mark Sue said in a recent research report. "Ericsson's core wireless infrastructure business is humming along, so we don't know why it's sticking with the joint venture," he writes.

It's a question that crops up increasingly often. Back when the venture was formed in 2001 by combining also-ran mobile phone units at Sony and Ericsson, keeping a stake in handsets made more sense for Ericsson.

If the company was launching a new network technology, it could guarantee that compatible handsets were there to use it--ultimately helping Ericsson win more contracts. But that's less relevant now as Ericsson focuses on open network standards, Nomura's Jeffrey says. "It no longer matters if Sony Ericsson is the company supplying the handsets," he says. Besides, the mobile industry today is more focused on software and digital content than on hardware.

Ericsson gains knowhow and royalties
With Sony Ericsson facing losses and in need of cash, many in the industry believe it would be in Ericsson's interest to cut its losses. The problems with the venture mean Sony Ericsson is likely to continue to drag on Ericsson's earnings and cash flow for at least the next two years. And "while long-term upside potential would be lost in the event of Ericsson's selling its holding, there's no guarantee that any upside will prove material," says Nomura's Jeffrey.

Ericsson has its own reasons for not selling. For starters, says spokeswoman Jana Mancova, the company's customers still believe it's important for Ericsson to have handsets in its portfolio to maintain intimate knowledge of mobile technology from "end-to-end". Another complicating factor is that Sony Ericsson relies on many of Ericsson's patents, providing the Swedish company with a high margin income stream, Nomura's Jeffrey notes.

Nevertheless, many in the industry believe Sony would gain a lot by taking full control of the venture. The Japanese company could exert more control over products and strategy, as well as offering a full portfolio of smartphones, laptops, and netbooks under its own brand name.

Bringing mobiles in-house also could foster greater collaboration between the handset business and Sony's other electronics and content divisions, with the goal of improving the mobile user experience. Both Sony CEO Howard Stringer and Kazuo Hirai, the former Sony PlayStation head who was recently promoted to run Sony's new networked products and services unit, have emphasized mobile as a key strategic area for the company going forward.

A buyout by Sony would pile on debt
Some observers speculate that Hirai's promotion is evidence that Sony might want to develop a PlayStation mobile phone on its own. After all, Hirai is tasked with "developing new mobile products". But Sony has dismissed this idea as "pure speculation".

Moreover, Sony Ericsson says it has never doubted that Sony would be willing to license the PlayStation brand to the venture. The reason for the delay, the company says, is "we have previously felt that the technology to create a really integrated gaming phone was not there, but we are getting closer."

With plenty of problems in its own business, some question whether Sony would be willing and able to finance a full takeover and recapitalization of the venture by itself. Analyst David Gibson of Macquarie Securities figures Sony could snag Ericsson's stake in the company for US$1.6 billion, but in a note to clients he points out that doing so would lift Sony's net debt-to-equity ratio from 12 percent currently to 30 percent by this time next year.

"The benefits of such a deal are likely to be some time away and go against the rationalization strategy in the rest of the Sony business," he notes. Considering that Sony has struggled for three years to make its television business profitable, investors are unlikely to applaud another troubled business depressing the company's earnings.

Yet with Sony Ericsson needing cash soon, Sony and Ericsson need to figure out fast whether to bring in the divorce lawyers--or just to seek a good relationship counselor.

Intel will design PlayStation 4 GPU

FOR THE NEXT next generation of consoles, PS4, XBox3 and Wii2, it looks like Intel is in, Nvidia is out. The picture for their GPUs is starting to become clear.
##CONTINUE##
Yeah, Intel won the PS4 GPU, no shock considering how much they needed a console win to get people coding for Larrabee. They can either convince companies to put in a code path for the chip in Big Budget Mediocre Sequel 7: Vengeance of the Farmland Creatures by sending people with wads of money and begging, or get a console win. They got a console win, and it was the right way to go.

Some people hanging around the Sony booth at CES were nice enough to let us in on the scoop. It seems Nvidia has proverbially bent Sony over like they did MS on the XBox, and are not really welcome there any more. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of guys, either way, but hardly an unexpected outcome.

Sony is looking pretty desperate nowadays with a multi-billion dollar loss in 2008, and more pain on the way for 2009. The PS3 has utterly failed in the market, and there was a lot of talk about whether or not there was going to be a PS4 at all. Sony needed a reliable partner with deep pockets which would actually be there in 2012 to fund this exercise in DRM, and it found one in Intel. Damn good choice really.

The nice Sony engineering lady at CES told us that Intel essentially bought the win, a theoretically good architecture, no imminent threats of going bust, and not being hated by Sony all contributed too. With a couple of deliverables satisfied, the PS4 GPU belongs to Intel. No word if this is going to be the entire architecture, CPU as well, or not. That, from what we are told, is not final yet.

Moving on to the the XBox3 GPU, also due in 2012, we hear strong rumors (but have not confirmed yet) that it is an ATI design. Given the close ties between ATI and MS over DirectX, the bad blood between Nvidia and MS over the grand Nvidia DX10 neutering, plus memories of the XBox1, this is not a surprise either. The bed was made for short-term profits years ago, time to lie in it.

That brings us to the Wii2, also due around the same time. Given that the ArtX / ATI guys have won about every Nintendo GPU since they went 3D, this one appears to be a no-brainer. If you take into account that it will likely be evolutionary, it is almost assuredly an ATI win as well, but we haven't confirmed it either way.

So in the end, you have Intel with one GPU confirmed, Larrabee, and ATI with another almost totally confirmed. The third is still unknown but likely will be ATI as well. Notice there is no Nvidia in this equation.

That will hamstring the egos in green badly soon, forcing them to spend a lot more on developer relations and tools if they can't claw back a console win. The games for 2012 start coding in a year, so the effects will be leading, not trailing for them.

The only real way for them to get a win at this point is to buy it, and they 1) don't have any money. 2) are bidding against someone who has money 3) are bidding against someone who they picked a stupid public fight with and 4) are hated by the two companies that make the consoles they target. This brilliant management strategy combines to mean they are locked out, if they survive that long.

Next next gen consoles also will likely have a CPU which we know nothing about. That said, given that Intel will basically be designing large swathes of the PS4, it would seem to be leaning toward x86. Given that, and MS's inclination toward x86 software, that would seem a natural path for them to follow as well, if for no other reason than to protect the living room from the ARM scourge running Linux.

With that, we have the first hard info on the next next generation gaming boxes. Given silicon time scales, three years out means work starts about now. ATI and Intel have work to do, but it should be very interesting when all things are done, a radical shift towards the PC of a magnitude not seen since the Playstation replaced cartridges with CDs.

Sony's GPS Camcorders Know Where You Shot the Video

On Wednesday here at CES, Sony rolled out thirteen new Handycam camcorders, all compatible with a new GPS accessory that allows for geo-tagging (adding the location and time to recorded video), Three of the HD camcorders will even have the GPS built in.
##CONTINUE##
Maps will be viewable on the camcorder's LCD screen and will be supplied by Navteq, the company said. The Sony GPS-CS3KA GPS unit will retail for about $150 and will work with all Handycams and the newly announced Webbie HD camcorders.

Some of the new High-Def camcorders will be outfitted with a brand new CMOS sensor that captures less noise and features twice the sensitivity of Sony's previous generation, which allows for significantly improved image quality overall, but especially in low-light environments.

The performance boost comes from a redesign in the sensor build: previous generation sensors used a front-illuminated build that called for metal wiring between the sensor's photo diode and the on-chip lens. The new back-illuminated sensor places the metal wiring behind the photo diode, which places the photo diode closer to the light passing through the lens—and that increases the sensitivity and lowers the amount of noise.

Of the camcorders, five are high-def, eight are standard-def and all are entirely tapeless. The camcorders will record to either DVD, internal flash memory, a Memory Stick Pro Duo card or internal hard drive, none will record to the miniDV digital tape format.

Sony's flagship High-Def camcorder is the $1,500 HDR-XR520V. Its highlights include a video-capture resolution of 1920x1080 at 60 interlaced frames per second, a 240-Gbyte hard drive (which can capture 101 hours in its lowest quality setting), 12X zoom, built-in GPS, improved optical image stabilization, face detection, shutter smile (which automatically takes pictures of subjects when they're smiling even when recording video), Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound recording, and a 3.2-inch touch-panel LCD screen. Sony will also offer High-Def camcorders at the price points of $1,300, $1,000, $750 and $600 via the HDR-XR500V, HDR-XR200V, HDR-XR100, and HDR-CX100 (respectively). All will be available in March.

Sony's flagship standard-definition camera, the DCR-SR87,will be priced around $500, record to a built-in 80-GB hard drive or Memory Stick PRO Duo card, have a 2.7-inch touch-screen LCD and feature a 25x zoom (although a less expensive model will feature a 60x zoom!).

Other standard-def cameras will be offered at the price points of $450, $430, $400, $370, $300 and $270 via the DCR-SR67, DCR-DVD850, DCR-SR47, DCR-SX60, DCR-SX41, DCR-DVD650 and DCR-SX40. Some will be available in March while other will be available in February.

Sony confirms touch-screen X-Series Walkman

(Credit: Sony)

##CONTINUE##
Looks like my fellow MP3 editor Donald Bell is gonna have to eat some words, although he was right about one thing: we won't be seeing a touch-screen MP3 player from Sony all that soon in the US. You're going to have to wait until May to get your hands on the X-Series Walkman, which was officially announced at CES 2009. I can wait longer than that, personally, because while this player has some sweet features, there's something about the look of it that comes off as just a touch generic to me. Still, Sony tends to do a good job of giving it's portables a nice, solid feel, so I suppose I'll wait to cast my final judgment until tomorrow when I get to lay hands on the player for a photo shoot. (Stay tuned for a slide show a bit later this week.)

New info and images of the Sony Vaio P surface

##CONTINUE##The UMPC/Netbook market has become something of a spectacle in the past year, with almost every major hardware manufacturer angling for the hearts of budget and space conscious consumers across the globe. Sony, however, has been notable absent from the sub-compact genre, so news of their upcoming Vaio P has been met with considerable interest. Thanks to a German fan site, we’ve got a bit more info about the soon-to-be-released netbook. The Vaio P will sport an Atom Z250 processor most likely running at 1.33 ghz, 2GB of RAM, a stock HDD with an SSD ugrade option, GPS, UMTS connectivity, and more. All of this goodness should hit the streets for around $970, which is significantly higher than the average netbook, but certainly in keeping with Sony’s premium Vaio line of products. No word on a specific launch, but expect to see this thing go official sometime during next week’s CES festivities.

Xbox 360 benefited from Cell processor?

The Wall Street Journal has written an article on the new book The Race for a New Game Machine written by David Shippy and Mickie Phipps, which claims Microsoft was able to benefit from the processor's development.
##CONTINUE##
Sony partnered with Toshiba and IBM to develop a processor oriented towards multimedia tasks and software, and the three companies began development of the Cell processor in 2001, to be completed for the PlayStation 3's scheduled launch of Christmas 2005.

In 2002, Microsoft approached IBM to develop a processor for its next-generation console (Xbox 360). IBM's Adam Bennet showed Microsoft the specifications they developed for the Cell processor's core, still in development, and in 2003 Microsoft contracted with IBM for a similar processor.

All three companies agreed IBM would be given the rights to manufacture and distribute the processor. Apparently Sony made no specifics upon their use of the processor during production, and didn't anticipate IBM would sell their parts of the processor during its development, certainly not to Microsoft for its own game machine.

Development of the two processors were so close, in fact, that Shippy and Phipps discussed how they had to hide their additional work from the other two companies working on the Cell, whose co-workers might have been sitting in the cubicle across from Cell's developers. Shippy in particular says he felt "contaminated" using the stuff he learned from the Cell's development on the core processor for Microsoft's next machine, claiming "Sony's R&D money was spent creating a component for Microsoft to use against it."

On top of that, despite how the designs for both processors were completed on time, Sony got its chips 6 weeks after Microsoft. This is because Microsoft hired a third-party chip manufacturer to handle their large demand of chips, which provided the company chips. Sony, on the other hand, stuck with IBM and had to wait another six weeks before the next batch was made.

Information on the book's contents came from the WSJ's summary, and leave out a lot of technical detail, most important of which is the type of parts of the Cell used in the Xbox 360's processor. The authors are credible: both Shippy and Phipps worked on the Cell's architecture, with Shippy acting as the core's chief architect. Shippy was also the lead architect behind previous designs of IBM's PowerPC architecture. None of the information Microsoft or Sony has distributed about their machines' processors could validate the claims made by this book, though both processors did involve IBM's PowerPC architecture.

Sony subnotebook expected at CES (not a netbook)

Sony is rumoured to be launching a Vaio Pocket PC at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January, and there has been some support for this idea on the Sony Style website.
##CONTINUE##

The specification is for a system with a 1.33GHz Intel processor and an 8 inch screen running Windows Vista. If so, Gizmodo and other sites are probably wrong to call it a "netbook". It's more likely to be a subnotebook, and I expect it to appear at a subnotebook-type price of £/$999 or more.

The 1.33GHz clock speed suggests an Intel Core 2 Duo chip, rather than the 1.6GHz Atom you'd expect in a netbook. Core 2 Duos with this rating have been available both in Low Voltage (L7200) and Ultra Low Voltage (U7700) versions, and neither is cheap compared to a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270.

It's not so easy to explain the 1600 x 768 pixel screen, but Sony has produced letter-box subnotebooks before. The Sony Vaio PCG-C1 subnotebook aka PictureBook, which I reviewed in May 1999, had a 1024 x 480 screen with almost the same aspect ratio.

Kevin (Kilmo) Kang from Korea has the best set of pics of the new Sony P-series machines at CNet Asia.

But it does seem strangely hard for many people to understand that a subnotebook PC is just a smaller version of a notebook PC, which was originally defined by the A4(ish) size of the Compaq LTE and IBM ThinkPad 700 PCs. Machines that are larger than notebook PCs (such as the MacBook Air, whatever the Wall Street Journal says) are not subnotebooks, though I guess you could call them supernotebooks if you really wanted.

As a matter of fact, almost all netbooks are also subnotebooks, just as they are also laptops and they are also portable PCs. What mainly distinguishes netbooks from notebooks is that netbooks do not use full-spec processors etc. They are intended -- at least by implication -- for use with online applications, and not for more intensive tasks such as video and audio processing. Sony, of course, focuses on video and audio: that's where the Vaio name comes from.

Large PC manufacturers often have several ranges of notebook PC to cover different markets, including: subnotebooks, value notebooks, ultraportables, "thin and light," desktop replacements, entertainment and gaming notebooks. Value notebooks, such as Dell's Vostro range, start at similar prices to netbooks.

Sony’s “pocket” PC: Netbook or notebook?

The last thing the world need is another netbook, but this one seems to have a twist: a small LED display (only 8 inches) with a large resolution of 1,600 by 768 pixels. Other specs appear to include a 1.33GHz Intel processor, a 60GB hard drive or 128GB SSD, and Windows Vista. Based on the clock speed, the chip might be an Intel Atom Z520 or the ultra low-voltage Core 2 Duo U7700, a more powerful and much pricier processor. The display size–along with some blurry pictures which were posted on Engadget and other sites–would put the “P series” somewhere between a netbook and what Intel refers to as an MID, or Mobile Internet Device, the target device for the Z series Atom processor. But it would be unusual to pair this chip with Vista and such a high-resolution display–most netbooks use Windows XP and the handful of MIDs that have shipped tend to use lightweight Linux operating systems. So it could be that the P series won’t be a netbook at all, but rather a traditional, high-end subnotebook with a distinctive display size and design.

VAIO P Netbook: “It fits in a pocket”, says Sony

It looks like Sony is really jumping into the Netbook business. All the teasing comes to almost a climax today when the company released specs and a picture of what they’re calling the Sony P or P-series. According to SonyStyle, the P stands for “pocket”. Whether the P fits in my pant pocket or not, I can’t wait to get my hands on a unit; hopefully sooner than later.

As far as specs and features go, the P looks might impressive for a Netbook. It’ll sport a 1.33ghz Intel processor, an 8-inch LED display with resolution of 1600 x 768, a 60GB HDD or 128GB SSD. Battery and pricing are filled in as “NaN” and “X”, so we’ll have to be on the look out, as it gets closer to CES 2009.

It’ll come in red, champagne gold and black. It’s pretty obvious that the pictures are of the TT and they’re mainly used as placeholder. So at least there’s somewhat of a mystery left for the official launch event.

##CONTINUE##
