##CONTINUE##

Nokia Launches Answer To Apple's App Store

Nokia's Ovi virtual application store can access more devices than its rivals and will use social networking and location to offer relevant apps.
##CONTINUE##
Nokia (NYSE: NOK)'s answer to Apple's App Store rolled out to a bumpy start, as the company's debut of the Ovi Store was plagued with problems.

The over-the-air mobile content store was launched late Monday night, and users reported issues such as problems signing into their accounts, lack of applications, and overall sluggishness.

"Shortly after launching the Ovi Store at 2 a.m. ET, we began experiencing extraordinarily high spikes of traffic that resulted in some performance issues for users accessing store.ovi.com and store.ovi.mobi," Nokia said in a blog post. "We immediately began to address this issue by adding servers, which resulted in intermittent performance improvements. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused Ovi Store users and encourage you to continue giving us feedback as we develop the service further."

While the opening-day jitters are surely a disappointment for Nokia, the launch of the virtual application store puts it on equal footing with its rivals. Apple has gained the most attention with its successful App Store, but Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Mobile already have launched over-the-air stores or will soon.

Nokia said its advantages will be its global reach and the store's integration with other data. The Ovi Store is accessible by more than 50 million devices, including the Nokia N97, which is far more than its rivals can reach. Additionally, the company will utilize social networking and location-based information to suggest relevant mobile content.

The store is now available in multiple languages and countries, and it can be accessed at store.ovi.com through a Nokia browser. The company also announced an agreement with AT&T to make the Ovi Store available to the carrier's customers in the United States later this year.

##CONTINUE##

Ovi

Nokia to open Ovi Map Player platform to developers

Nokia said today that it’s sharing its mapping technology with developers who want to create their own personalized map applications.
##CONTINUE##
This move represents a shift for Nokia from offering its own services to becoming a platform for third-party location-based services. By layering services on top of its phones, and copying Apple’s strategy of connecting services to e-commerce on the phones, Nokia hopes to steal some of the iPhone’s thunder.

The shared platform could generate a bunch of new apps that are synchronized both on the web and on smart phones, creating competition for web-mapping players such as Google Maps and Mapquest. Beyond that, if the services make Nokia phones more desirable, Nokia can sell more phones.

Speaking at the Where 2.0 conference in San Jose, Calif., Michael Halbherr, vice president of social location services at Nokia, said that the Ovi Maps Player API gives developers a new Java-based version of the generic Ovi Maps that they can personalize. Developers can then insert their apps as widgets into web sites, enabling new services such as the ability to overlay bicycle routes onto a city transit map that includes train schedules.

Developers can layer any sort of look they want onto the Ovi Maps product. They can put an accurate overhead satellite view on a map, or change it for a Google Maps-like street by street view. Or they can render a map from a 3-D view, with major landmarks highlighted as 3-D animated objects. In this picture, for instance, you can see London’s Tower Bridge rendered in 3-D on a street map.

Among those using the platform are travel sites like Lonely Planet, Michelin, and Wcities. Nokia has already built 3-D landmarks in more than 200 cities worldwide. When users visit maps of those cities, they can change the view by rotating or tilting the map or switching to a night time view. The underlying map technology comes from Navteq, which Nokia bought for $8 billion in 2007.

With the new Ovi Maps app, users can map out pedestrian paths or vehicle paths, with real-time traffic integrated into the app. The maps are also integrated with the Ovi app store, which resembles Apple’s AppStore for the iPhone, which Nokia is rolling out this summer.

Nokia Beta Labs mobile website now available

Nokia Beta Labs, the place where all kinds of interesting Symbian and Java applications are announced by Nokia’s developers, now has a new website especially optimized for mobile browsers.
##CONTINUE##
So when you visit the Nokia Beta Labs via your phone, you should automatically see the mobile website instead of the desktop one.

However, if this doesn’t happen, you can scroll down and click on the “Show mobile version” link.

The Nokia Beta Labs blog has also been enhanced, thus users can now log in with their Nokia Accounts.

Keep in mind that the Nokia Beta Labs mobile website is still in beta (isn’t that ironic?), meaning that it still needs improvements – which will surely come shortly.

##CONTINUE##

Ovi

Symbian:

Lee Williams

Nokia halts Ovi Share development, sharpens service strategy focus

Nokia recently announced it was refocusing it service strategy in certain areas. Nokia said it was looking to 'provide a better, more simplified service' and would work more closely with third parties. The implications of this announcement are now starting to emerge: mocoNews reports that Nokia is closing its Kirkland (Seattle) offices and Reuters reports that Nokia is halting invesment in its media sharing site, Ovi Share. Read on for more.
##CONTINUE##
Nokia's new service strategy focus

In its press release Nokia noted:

"The planned changes are aimed at improving and simplifying the user experience of Nokia services, increasing opportunities for third party developers and other partners to create compelling services, and accelerating the development of a common platform for Nokia's different service offerings," said Niklas Savander, Executive Vice President, Services, Nokia.

As part of the announced changes, all mobile games will now become available through the Ovi Store, in addition to through their existing channels. "We believe this will create a better experience for Nokia's millions of customers and spur opportunities for game developers," Savander continued.

In addition, Nokia will add a variety of third party partners, such as other image and social networking sites, to the image capture and sharing features on its devices. This move is aimed at enhancing the Nokia device experience for those customers who actively use third party services.

Translated out of press release speak what this means is that Nokia is looking to work more closely with existing third party services. Rather than try to build every service itself Nokia will look to partner with existing services. In the case of media sharing this means working more closely with services like Flickr, YouTube, Facebook and MySpace.

We can expect to see additional services being added to Share online application (currently Flickr, Vox and Ovi Share), which is the basis for media sharing across a number of Nokia devices. The MySpace and Facebook homescreen widgets, which will ship on the Nokia N97, are further examples of this strategy.

At the Nokia Developer Summit Nokia announced it intention to make APIs available for Share online more widely available. Previously these have been shared only with a limited set of partners. The basic APIs are based around the ATOM Publishing Protocol. This is part of a larger plan to turn Ovi into a platform which developers can build their own solutions on top of that. An additional example of this is Nokia's Apps on Maps initiative.

Related to this is the news that all mobile games will become available though Ovi Store. This means we'll see N-Gage and SNAP Mobile games being made available though Ovi Store. N-Gage games will be available on a try and buy basis, but, for the time being, will still use the N-Gage client as their launching mechanism and community / online hub.

Ovi Share goes into maintenance mode

In the Reuters news article a Nokia spokesperson is quoted as saying that "Ovi Share ... is planned to be maintained in its current state". In effect Nokia will discontinue further investment in Ovi Share and instead rely on, and direct it users to third party media sharing sites. While Nokia does plan to maintain the site in its current state this is effectively the end of the road for Ovi Share.

Ovi Share was operating in a very competitive space and increasingly faced criticism for it performance and feature set when compared against Flickr and YouTube. Ovi Share was the result of Nokia's acquisition of Twango. Twango's original vision was to provide a site for sharing any type of media, with an emphasis on sharing within existing social connections (through 'Channels'). Under Nokia, this vision was, to an extent, diluted to become a more generic media sharing site. This was an inevitable result of the need to fit it into the Ovi service portfolio.

Nokia will use third party media sharing sites to provide the same functionality of Ovi Share. Given that this is what most users are doing anyway (i.e. uploading to their favourite media sharing site regardless on the one click upload functionality provided by Ovi Share), it is a sensible rationalisation of Nokia's service strategy. There may even be potential for revenue sharing opportunities as Nokia leverages its unique user reach to the benefit of third party companies.

Nonetheless the failure of Ovi Share to gain traction will be an embarrassment for Nokia. Quite apart from the estimated $96 million cost, it demonstrates the difficulty has had in building Internet services as it seeks to transition from a hardware dominated company to a hardware, software and service led company.

Nokia has had mixed fortunes with its recent service related acquisitions. Files on Ovi (Avvenu) is largely unheralded and Nokia has recently cut back the sales team of mobile advertising division (Enpocket). On the more positive side, Loudeye provided a decent base for the Nokia Music Store and Nokia's gate5 acquisition has matured impressively into the Nokia Maps service; it is now leading the social location charge. Intellisync was a spectacular failure on the enterprise side, but looks set for impressive come back as the structure behind Nokia Messaging. It's still early to come to any real conclusions on Oz Communications (being integrated into Nokia Messaging) and Plazes (being integrated into Nokia Maps).

Acquisitions aside, Nokia faces a key test - it must prove its ability to work closely with third parties to build solutions on top of its Ovi ecosystem. Nokia provides third parties with a unique opportunity because of its unmatched reach, but this benefit is only felt if sustainable and profitable partnerships are built.

On a more general level this ties in with company's overall business strategy which has seen Nokia executives speak about the need for Nokia to collaborate with others in the creation of open ecosystems. The most obvious examples of this strategy are the Symbian Foundation and Qt Software, but the 'openness' strategy is pervasive in current Nokia thinking.

Nokia Ovi Store to Open with 20,000 Apps

Nokia is attempting to make up for some lost time by making a big splash with its upcoming Ovi Store. With over 20,000 titles ready to go at launch, Nokia is in a good position to compete with Apple’s App Store which has about 40,000 apps.
##CONTINUE##
Nokia’s number of titles at launch is a sharp contrast to many of today’s first app stores. For example, the Android Market started with a mere 50 applications. Even Apple’s popular App Store only offered about 500 applications at launch.

You’ll notice we’ve said Nokia will offer about 20,000 titles. In other words, these are not all apps. Store items are said to include games, general apps, and even short video clips, photos, and audio files. There will even be an entire category of short videos and “mobisodes.”

One very unique feature of the Ovi Store is that it will use GPS to find and recommend content based on the user’s location. The Ovi Store’s recommendation engine will also be able to recommend content based on a user’s preferences and those of his friends and family. (You’ll be able to opt-out of the recommendation and GPS content features for privacy reasons.) In addition to various titles, the Ovi Store will be used as a distribution platform for new firmware releases and updates to already installed software.

The Ovi Store gets its name from the Finnish word for "door." The store will represent a wide range of languages and cultural content which will potentially make it the most global app store yet. Nokia typically offers products in more than 60 languages. So far, U.S. and Asian companies are providing the bulk of the content though many countries, languages, and cultures are represented in the store.

The store is scheduled to open in late spring. The first handset to ship with Ovi will be the much anticipated Nokia N97 which will hit the market in July. The Nokia N97 will feature a touchscreen and a QWERTY keyboard. Ovi will also be made available to all S40 and S60 handsets. As with other app stores, developers and content owners will be able to set their own prices. Nokia spokeswoman Leslie Morgan Nakajima said there will be a mix of paid and free content.

Nokia is facing some resistance from U.S. carriers in receiving full support for the Ovi Store. Let’s hope they can work things out before launch.

Nokia Ovi Store to Launch with Thousands of Applications

When Nokia launches its Ovi Store marketplace for applications that run on the company's smartphone, the store will debut with "thousands" of applications, Nokia officials said at the Nokia Developer Summit 2009 here.
##CONTINUE##
Eric John, director of marketing for Forum Nokia, the cell phone giant's developer outreach organization, said there are thousands of applications in the pipeline being vetted by Nokia, and that when the much-anticipated Ovi Store debuts in May it will have at least 1,000 or more applications on it. A Nokia staff member demonstrating how Ovi Store worked in the conference exhibit hall confirmed that at least 1,000 applications will be available on day one.

However, not only will the Nokia Ovi Store launch with a vast number of applications, Nokia is promoting its industry-leading market share as a key driver for why mobile application developers should look at Nokia's application store.

"We have extraordinary global reach and scale," John said. "And we enable developers to take what they know and build what they want," he added, noting that developers can bring their knowledge of C and C++, the Symbian OS, Java, Flash and standard web technologies to build applications that will run on the Nokia platform. Essentially, John said Nokia hopes the capability to sell their applications for the world's leading mobile platform by sheer numbers alone will be too enticing for developers to pass up.

John said there will be all kinds of applications available on the Ovi Store, including a number of enterprise-style applications that the company refers to as "productivity" applications that will be helpful to business users.

The Ovi Store will be Nokia's response to the wildly popular Apple App Store, which enables developers to sell the applications they have created for the iPhone.

"We're glad they are having the success they are having with App Store, because now I don’t have to explain what the term 'app' means, John said. “Apple has popularized the term."

Srikanth Raju, director of product marketing for Forum Nokia, said Nokia held an event at its facility in Mountain View, Calif., where the company invited iPhone developers to come in and talk about opportunities to build applications to or migrate their existing applications to the Nokia platform and Ovi Store. "And we filled the hall where we held the event," Raju said. "Those iPhone developers said they were very interested in delivering apps for the Ovi Store."

Rob Taylor, head of Nokia Forum, said in the end it is all about the money that can be made on the Nokia Ovi platform, and both Nokia and the developers will benefit. "We want to be able to make more money together," he said. "In short, it's about making money."

Taylor said that "very soon" Nokia is going to be launching the Ovi Store to 50 million devices. "And we're about ready to conclude a project where we've embedded hundreds of apps on regional versions of the N97," The N97 is Nokia's "cool" new phone that will be launched in June. Raju called the N97 an "iconic device" that can challenge the iPhone in coolness, and added that Nokia has several more such "iconic" devices hitting the manufacturing floor now and in the coming weeks and months.

In addition, Nokia is offering Ovi Discover, a service to make it easier for people to discover applications on the Ovi Store. And upon launch, the Ovi Store will feature mobile billing, but it will only be available in seven countries initially, the company said.

Nokia is charging developers a one-time $50 fee to register their application for Ovi Store and to have it certified. That fee is waived for members of Nokia's Champions or LaunchPad developer programs. However, like Apple and other mobile app store providers, Nokia is offering a 70-30 split with developers to sell their wares on the Ovi Store. Nokia gets 30 percent and the developers gets 70 percent of the sale of each application.

John said once a developer submits an application to Nokia to be available on Ovi Store, there is a vetting process that could take up to five to 10 days, although it could be shorter depending on what is required in the overall quality assurance process for the application.

"We're enabling developers to be self-service publishers," he said.

"We help developers learn, build and earn," Raju said.

有信心应对iPhone(手机上网)等对手的挑战

Nokia Lays Off 450, Opens Ovi API to Third-Party Apps

Nokia announced an upcoming round of company layoffs affecting 450 employees, citing a need to reduce costs in the wake of a 27% first quarter sales decline compared to last year's earnings. Further cost-reducing efforts include plans to open up its mobile game distribution services to third-party developers.
##CONTINUE##
Previously, Nokia laid off 600 workers in November, predicting a worldwide mobile sales decline. February brought news that another 320 Nokia employees would lose their jobs, and the company announced in March that it would cut its staff by an additional 1,700.

In an attempt to spur mobile sales for its supported devices, Nokia announced that the API for its Ovi Share service will soon be available to all third-party developers. The technology allows users to share stored photos and videos.

Additionally, all mobile games developed for Nokia devices will be available for download via Nokia's Ovi Store, an online storefront scheduled to be launched in May. The iPhone App Store-like service will supplement distribution of Nokia applications already available through other channels.

Nokia loses sales to smartphones

The Guardian is reporting that Nokia saw its profits fall a massive 90 per cent in the first quarter of 2009 as consumers demonstrably kept hold of last year's handsets and retailers have held back on new purchases until old stock is depleted.
##CONTINUE##
"The lower sales volumes for Nokia and the industry, both year on year and sequentially, were primarily driven by the negative impact of the rapidly deteriorating global economic conditions, including weaker consumer and corporate spending, severely constrained credit availability and unprecedented currency market volatility," says Nokia.

Although smartphones such as the iPhone aren't directly impinging on the mobile market, these figures show that a manufacturer that fails to address the feature rich handset competition - estimated to account for 23 per cent of the entire mobile market by 2013 - is likely to see further difficulties.

Nokia's only saving grace has been the moderate success of its first fully touchscreen device, the 5800 XpressMusic (despite desperate claims that the N-Series is outperforming the iPhone) which has sold around 3 million units since its launch last November.

Sony Ericsson, on the other hand, has yet to address this small yet vital area of the mobile phone market, and has seen less than half the number of handset sales as the same period last year.

Another area that requires serious consideration is software support. Traditionally manufacturers like Nokia and Sony Ericsson are done with a sale once the handset is in the consumer's hands, but the proliferation of online application stores suggests users are beginning to expect some kind of connected support with their new phones - again, something Sony Ericsson has failed to address, though Nokia is preparing its new Ovi system.

It could be that this is the critical aspect that begins to drive mobile handset sales, in exactly the same way as software is the key to selling games hardware.

Apple and Nokia: ARMed for a Netbook Fight

The netbook world — or at least netbook speculation — continues to be a growth industry. One of the key questions is whether future netbooks will be more like laptops or like smartphones in their platform choices.
##CONTINUE##
Towards that end, last month an industry expert predicted a shift from laptop (Intel Atom (INTC)) to smartphone (ARM-licensees) processors:

ARM-based processors will take market share from Intel Corp.'s Atom in the netbook segment and hold 55 percent of the netbook market by 2012, according to Robert Castellano, president of The Information Network.

The movement is toward the original intention of a netbook—an inexpensive device for accessing the Internet, Castellano said.

A shift to ARM-based processors would benefit existing suppliers of smartphone CPUs like Qualcomm (QCOM), Freescale (FSL) and TI (TXN).

The key question about making a viable ARM netbook platform remains the software. Fortunately, there are a plethora of software choices used by smartphone makers, and a lot of investment and activity here.

Forbes Wednesday reported a rumor that HP (HPQ) is considering an Android-based netbook. (Android of course is a smartphone OS with a Linux kernel and its own GUI APIs). I wouldn’t be surprised if Dell (DELL) copied this approach, certainly more plausible than the reports that Dell (the ultimate commodity IT company) will buy Palm(PALM) (with its custom OS).

Nokia (NOK)has been eyeing the netbook space with envy — the N97 is a little more phone and a little less laptop replacement; Many have speculated that Nokia is considering offering a netbook, to the point that even Nokia admits the interest.

ArsTechnica thinks it will be Linux powerered. However, given the lack of Linux applications, I find more plausible the speculation by The Register that the first netbook will be based on Symbian (like the N97).

And then there is Apple (AAPL). Both its laptops and smartphones run OS X and its Safari web browser, so the question would appear to be which GUI and applications it thinks best for netbooks.

I strongly suspect that the Apple netbook (expected this summer) will be using the iPhone OS, because otherwise Apple risks cannibalizing its core laptop business.

However, it’s clear that there is an even better reason to predict this: the iPhone App Store. Apple controls the distribution of 3rd party software for the iPhone in a way it never has in its previous 30 year history, and also takes 30% of the action. Steve Jobs always got mad sharing profits with the middleman and now that sharing is over.

So in one swell foop, Apple can put itself at the head of the migration from laptops to mobile devices, finish transitioning its developers from the desktop to the phone, change the software industry business model from bloatware upgrades to consumer fads, and switch from a business where it has 5% in North America to one where it has more like 30-50% (depending on your denominator).

Of course, there still are some important product details to be resolved, likescreen size, weight, battery life and keyboard. Something less than 2 lbs with a real keyboard would be huge for the US market, but I suspect that’s not what Steve has in mind.

But if this the wave of the future, what it does say for the rivals?

  • Nokia has Ovi which has a solid infrastructure but not a lot of excitement. Still, more than any other firm they control their own destiny.
  • HP (and others) would depend on the Google-run Android Marketplace which is gradually maturing but will never provide them a revenue stream
  • RIM (RIMM) (creator of the BlackBerry thumb disease) has its new App World but is a long way from making laptop replacements.
  • Other cellphone makers (Samsung (SSNKF.PK), LG (LGERF.PK), Motorola (MOT)) have neither app stores nor PC competencies. The existing Taiwanese netbook makers don’t have a lot of expertise in PDAs and cellphones. Neither camp has their app store or is good at software.
  • The existing Taiwanese netbook makers don’t have a lot of expertise in PDAs and cellphones and even less in their own software and app stores.
  • Many diversified Japanese CE companies (like Fujitsu (FJTSY.PK), Panasonic (PC), Sharp (SHCAY.PK), Sony (SNE), Toshiba (TOSBF.PK)) are players in both spaces, and thus are well equipped to make portable devices but leave the app stores to the OS player or (especially in Japan) the operators.

Near term, it looks like Apple and Nokia are best situated to push ARM-enabled jumbo smartphones. Between notebooks, netbooks and PDAs, HP is a well situated challenger, but nearly all their portable devices use Windows, so going to Android (or some other choice) could be stretch.

Nokia: Calling America with a New Smartphone

Popular in much of the world, the Finnish handset maker goes after American consumers with an ultrathin smartphone
##CONTINUE##
What do soccer club Manchester United, singer Robbie Williams, and Finnish handset maker Nokia (NOK) have in common? They're all hugely popular in most of the world, but have only a handful of fervent followers in the U.S. Now Nokia, with 37% of the global mobile-phone market, is making a new push to boost its meager 8% share in the U.S.

In May, AT&T (T), the largest wireless carrier in the U.S., plans to start selling Nokia's e71x, the thinnest smartphone with a Qwerty keyboard in America. The phone looks similar to Research in Motion's (RIMM) BlackBerry but is a sleeker 0.39 inches thick. It also has a music player, video camera, and GPS capabilities. By offering an eye-catching phone for an expected $100 at retail, Nokia may have its best chance in years to compete in the U.S. smartphone market against RIM and Apple (AAPL), whose hot-selling iPhone starts at twice the price. "We are starting to gain momentum," says Mark Louison, president of Nokia's North American operations.

AT&T, T-Mobile USA, and Verizon Wireless have carried a handful of Nokia's cheap and midtier devices. But to get Nokia's highest-end phones, American customers had to buy them directly from the company via its Nokia.com Web site or Nokia stores. That meant consumers couldn't get the subsidies carriers often offer and would have to pay as much as $600.

HIGHER RETURNS OVERSEAS?

One cool phone can only do so much for Nokia, of course. The company has long harbored some ambivalence about the American market because of the heavy control wireless carriers exert and because wireless technology has not been as advanced as in Europe. Some experts believe Nokia let its U.S. share slide in part because it could reap higher returns in places like China, though Nokia executives say they haven't deliberately neglected the U.S.

To regain market share, Nokia will have to follow up the e71x with comparably promising phones. In particular, the company, which built its global dominance with stylish, durable phones built for wireless networks prevalent in Europe, needs to develop more phones with the CDMA wireless technology used by Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel (S).

Louison points out that Nokia recently placed its third CDMA phone with Verizon. The company is collaborating with carriers two years in advance of a phone's release, customizing looks, software, and radios. While Nokia typically launches phones elsewhere and then brings them to America, Louison says that could change this year. "You'll see products that we'll start introducing in this market first," he says.

The U.S. business is growing more important. Apple users, concentrated in the States, have become the early adopters in downloading software to cell phones. Eventually, software applications tied to particular devices could become the deciding factor when buyers choose a smartphone, says analyst Charles Wolf of Needham & Co. Nokia has to figure out how to encourage developers to write as many new cool apps for its phones as they do for the iPhone.

The Finnish company needs to win over consumers, too. Unlike mobile-phone users in most of the world, Americans don't think of Nokia as the cool, go-to company for advanced cell phones. John Jackson, vice-president at consultant CCS Insight, says Nokia will need great products and better marketing to change that attitude. Without it, he says, "you should not hold your breath for an extended Nokia presence in this market."

Analyst: Nokia could cut $5B in outsourcing

In a reverse-outsourcing move, Nokia will stop using external companies to assemble its handsets, cutting a whopping $5 billion in contract manufacturing business, according to an estimate from market watcher iSuppli Corp.
##CONTINUE##
Nokia's response to the economic recession stands in contrast to other big systems companies including IBM that are stepping up layoffs and outsourcing. Nevertheless the handset maker is under intense pressure and recently announced layoffs of 1,700 employees.

"Amid the global economic recession and slowing sales of mobile handsets, Nokia in recent months had begun the process of shifting some of its assembly operations away from contract manufacturers and back inside the company," said Adam Pick, a principal supply chain analyst at iSuppli .

The move comes in response to the severity of the downturn in handsets, Pick said. Late last year Nokia and analysts predicted the handset market would decline ten percent in 2009.

Last year Nokia outsourced the manufacturing of about 17 percent of its mobile phone assemblies to companies including Foxconn International Holdings, BYD, Elcoteq and Jabil Circuit. "Nokia's pull-back will shed more than $5 billion in revenue from electronics contract manufacturers," Pick said.

The market researcher will revise downward its forecast for the contract manufacturing market based on Nokia's move. Previously, iSuppli predicted the sector would shrink by 9.9 percent in 2009 to reach $270.8 billion, down from $300.7 billion in 2008.

The news is a good step for Nokia, showing the company's operational flexibility despite its size, Pick said.

诺基亚进军上网本,其智能手机已列属于口袋电脑,即MID(Mo-bileInternetDevice,),并非传统的笔记本。

Nokia China Confirms Job Cuts

Mobile phone giant Nokia has announced plans to cut 1700 jobs globally and the company's operation in China may also be affected.
##CONTINUE##
So far, Nokia China has confirmed that the company's headquarters will slash 1700 jobs in the coming months, involving many departments including mobile phone, marketing, corporate development and global support, but a definitive number for China is still unclear. This is known to be the second staff reduction of the world's largest mobile phone company in six months.

In November 2008, Nokia announced plans to cut 600 jobs in Finland, Britain, the United States and Singapore. At that time, Nokia China only had some structural adjustments.

A representative from Nokia China says it's a different situation this time and it is likely that some of the positions in the company will be adjusted. The company put forward a voluntary resignation plan last month, encouraging employees to resign on a voluntary basis. It is learned that Nokia China will pay the first 1000 employees who are willing to resign between March 1 and May 31, 2009. The company says it hopes to reduce human resource costs and avoid a compulsive reduction through this measure.

In addition, Nokia also encourages its staff to take non-paid vacations this year.

##CONTINUE##

##CONTINUE##
