Nokia Lays Off 450, Opens Ovi API to Third-Party Apps

Nokia announced an upcoming round of company layoffs affecting 450 employees, citing a need to reduce costs in the wake of a 27% first quarter sales decline compared to last year's earnings. Further cost-reducing efforts include plans to open up its mobile game distribution services to third-party developers.

Previously, Nokia laid off 600 workers in November, predicting a worldwide mobile sales decline. February brought news that another 320 Nokia employees would lose their jobs, and the company announced in March that it would cut its staff by an additional 1,700.

In an attempt to spur mobile sales for its supported devices, Nokia announced that the API for its Ovi Share service will soon be available to all third-party developers. The technology allows users to share stored photos and videos.

Additionally, all mobile games developed for Nokia devices will be available for download via Nokia's Ovi Store, an online storefront scheduled to be launched in May. The iPhone App Store-like service will supplement distribution of Nokia applications already available through other channels.
