WiMAX usage set to soar

A rush of orders for WiMAX customer premises equipment means that the delayed technology is set to finally make an impact.
##CONTINUE##
According to Taiwanese quango Market Intelligence and Consulting (MIC), orders for interopable customer equipment will hit 413,000 units in the second quarter of this year, compared to 264,000 in the first quarter. And in the third quarter sales will reach 485,000.

Demand for the equipment is such that manufacturers have been caught on the back foot, leading to shortages in components.

But that situation is already beginning to ease as Taiwanese companies have increased their production capabilities.

Ninety percent of products shipped in the first quarter used the 802.16e standard. WiMAX promises metropolitan wireless coverage at high bandwidth for both data and voice.

Intel is continuing to back the push to WiMAX but so far there are relatively few places in the world where it's been implemented.
