Will WiGig replace Wi-Fi?

A lot of us enjoy using Wi-Fi whether it is in a café, the library, or at home. Of course, that is just a small sampling of where you can access it. So, yesterday, when several huge technology companies announced a new, faster, short-distance way of transmitting data, I began to salivate.

Companies including Intel, Microsoft and Nokia (there are plenty of other big names) have announced a joint effort, creating the Wireless Gigabyte Alliance that will collaborate in developing a new wireless technological standard called WiGig.

Now here is the interesting part. While the WiGig’s frequency will have a shorter distance than your typical Wi-Fi set up, it will be able to transfer data at 6 gigabytes a second which completely topples the speeds that you normally get from your classic Wi-Fi connection. This becomes applicable to the gadget lover almost immediately.

I have discussed how the future of media lies in streaming content from devices such as the Roku, the VUDU Box and the OnLive. A lot of the gripes people had with this type of hardware were that they needed a fast connection to make a purchase worth their while. Since most content is coming out in HD these days, both online and on television, having a faster wireless connection will make it easier for people to access this media.

If you love HD, and your internet connection is slow, WiGig might be your savior. Now, like I said, the drawback is that the distance it covers is a lot smaller than typical Wi-Fi so it will have to be confined to single rooms where you house your electronics or computers. However, what you give up in mobility, you gain in an enormous increase in media accessibility and speed.

The WiGig technology will be the first real stab at widespread use of wireless capabilities running at 60 GHz and with all of the backing it has, it definitely has a real chance at replacing Wi-Fi in the house.

Look for it to hit consumer markets by next year. It is a ways away from commercial release, but if you are like me and constantly want fast internet for your media and your internet, it will be well worth the wait.
