Acer entered the market for smartphones -- a mobile phone which offers advance computer-like capabilities -- this year following the acquisition of Taiwan's portable device-maker Eten Information Systems Co. in 2008. Acer's senior vice president for smart handheld business, Aymar de Lencquesaing, told Reuters in an interview that the company is aiming to be a top five player in the segment, which has a global market of 300 million units.
"Our goal is to be one of the top five manufacturers of smartphones in 2012. We expect that this business will represent a probably 10 percent of our revenue by the year 2011," de Lencquesaing said.
Currently, Lencquesaing said, there are about 4 billion mobile phone users in the world and around 300 million of them are using smartphones.
The company is launching on Wednesday in Singapore three of its nine devices planned for this year.
"Our strategy is to offer products at a very aggressive price," Lencquesaing said.
