Cloud computing will reach $42bn by 2012, IDC claims

Cloud computing growth will almost triple to $42 billion (£29.5 billion) in the next three years, new research predicts.

A study by IDC claims the cheapness of this form of IT outsourcing will be behind the expansion and the credit crunch will encourage it.

Chris Morris, lead analyst for cloud computing research in Asia/Pacific and director for IDC's services research in this region, asserts that the outlook for cloud computing is "strong".

He states: "Over the next three years, as the use of cloud services expand from the domain of early adopters to that of the early majority, it becomes critical for IT vendors to develop strong cloud offerings."

Those businesses which do not contend for a leadership role in this sector will lose out to their competition, he claims.

Mr Morris asserts that these companies' traditional offerings, partner ecosystem and customer and market requirements will also need to take this form of IT outsourcing into account.

A recent IDC report predicted that the IT outsourcing sector will expand by 4.4 per cent in the next twelve.
