Virtualisation and cloud computing top Gartner predictions

An increase in server virtualisation and a movement towards cloud computing are the top technology trends for the coming years, according to Gartner’s latest reports.

According to Stephen Prentice, VP and Gartner Fellow, the server virtualisation software market is expected to grow by a compound average growth rate of 28% through 2013, rising from $ US 1.8 billion to $US 6.2 billion.

“It’s not just about providing virtual machines – it’s about providing infrastructure for those virtual machines,” explained Prentice during a local briefing in Auckland where Gartner discussed emerging trends and technologies.

For Prentice, companies who aren’t working in a virtual environment should not wait any longer. “If you’re not doing virtualisation now, you should be. If you are, you should look at doing it more,” added Prentice, who believes that virtualisation is not just about saving costs but also about remaining competitive.

Gartner also anticipates a bright future for cloud computing. The researchers believe that, by 2011, 30% of consulting and system integration revenue will be delivered via the cloud. “You need to be considering cloud-based infrastructures to allow you to be more competitive,” warned Prentice.

According to Gartner, the influence and the potential of cloud computing in business are far from stagnation, with more and more companies moving towards that environment.
