Don’t lie. 2008 was a big year for everyone. But for the video game industry, not so surprising in terms of which games sold the most throughout the year. Want to know the top five?

Numbers can be misleading, but these were strewn together by various data from the NPD Group, GfK, Enterbrain, and ChartTrack. Here’s a quick list of top sales in the world.
1. Mario Kart Wii - 8.94 million
2. Wii Fit - 8.31 million
3. Grand Theft Auto IV - 7.29 million
4. Smash Bros. Brawl - 6.32 million
5. Call of Duty: World At War - 5.89 million
Mario Kart sold five million alone in the US, with two million in Japan and 1.94 million in the UK. The game barely pulls ahead in front of Wii Fit, which sold 4.55 million in the US, 2.15 million in Japan, and 1.61 million in the UK.
While GTA IV did reach spot three, it wasn’t because of Japan, a market that usually doesn’t fancy the series, coming in with just 256,000 sales. Super Smash Bros Brawl sold 4.17 million in the US, with 1.75 million in Japan and 404,000 in the UK. That’s a little surprising to me, since the first one is better.
So you read it right? We’ve all seen it coming anyways. Three of them are from Nintendo while two are filled with violence. Separately, they both make sense. Together, it makes the world stranger than we thought. That’s video games for you; flipping the world upside down.
