When James Gosling, the father of Java and Sun Fellow rose to give his keynote at the eighth Sun Tech Days, it took a while for the applause to come down. Such is the power Sun and Java wields on the developers and the open source community.
Gosling set the tone for the three-day event by stating that the Java IT community has by far become the single largest developer network in the world with close to 6.5 million developers. Gosling talked on where Java is heading from what he developed 15 years ago.
"It's been an incredible journey and it's amazing how it has worked. Today there are more Java enabled devices than the entire people on the planet," said Gosling.
In the last fifteen years Java has touched the computing landscape in multiple manifestations - in the PCs, in the Internet and in mobile and embedded devices. "Java is everywhere and many people use Java in their daily lives without even knowing it," said Gosling.
The Java developer community strength in India is put at 7.8 lakh developers and the 'Sun Tech Days' is the single largest developer event in the country and in fact the Java community represents the 50 per cent of the total developer base of India told Anil Valluri, VP and MD India GEM, Sun Microsystems.
This year's theme is Empowering You. According to Sun, it's the developers who make up the computing fabric. With the tools and solutions Sun provides, the developers leverage that and give back to the community of users.
Sun's senior director of Developer Cloud Tools, Matt Thompson told Cybermedia News that Sun would be launching a 'Public Cloud' next month and it will be a service that will make cloud-based development more realistic.
Thompson did not reveal the specifics of the company's public cloud and it will be evident only by mid of March this year and one will see the exact nature of the Sun's cloud and how it will stack up with other cloud-based offerings in the market.
With Sun Tech Days, the company has successfully built an enviable base of developer community and it's growing every year in scale and size.
According to Anil Valluri, "The developer community in India has lot of opportunities and it has the potential to come out with innovative solutions. The event provides thousands of developers to hone their skills and upgrade to next generation of technologies."
This year the two key focus areas of the event is built around Java FX and Zembly. While Java FX promises richer and immersive Internet experience, Zembly is used to build social networking applications. This year's event is expected to create bigger proof points for Java FX and will set the stage for more innovative applications leveraging Java FX.
