New research by Evans Data reveals that over one-fifth of developers in the emerging markets of China, India and Latin America use Ruby for at least some of their work, compared with ten per cent in North America and western Europe.

John Andrews, president and chief executive of Evans Data, noted that scripting languages in general seem to be significantly more popular in emerging countries than in more developed countries worldwide.

"This is largely attributable to the fact that the developer population in the emerging markets is much younger and is more focused on web development than other types," he remarked.

Ruby was created by Yukihiro Matsumoto and publically released in 1995. It uses a mixture of parts of the Perl, Smalltalk, Eiffel, Ada and Lisp programming languages and is free to use, modify and distribute.
