The market intelligence firm IDC has disclosed that revenues from global application sales will reach $1.44 trillion this year, despite the continuing effects of the economic downturn.

Overall IT spending in the Asia Pacific region will increase by 1.4 per cent, which has been readjusted from its original forecast of four per cent made in November 2008.

John Gantz, chief research officer at IDC, suggested that the software markets look better prepared than their hardware counterparts.

He said: "The data also provides a clearer picture of how companies are curbing their expenditures. Investments in software and services are being maintained in pursuit of productivity and efficiency."

Earlier this month, IDC also suggested that the recession will drive the implementation of technology leasing and financing in Australia until 2011.
