German company sells Mac clones in Europe

German-based PearC is selling Intel-based Mac clones to customers in Europe. PearC follows American company Psystar that is being sued by Apple for selling Mac clones in the U.S.

The computers being sold in Europe come in three models: Starter, Advanced and Professional. The systems start at Euro 499 (US$645) and go up to Euro 1,499.

Each system has a variety of build-to-order items, including the ability to have Mac OS X Leopard installed.

Apple sued Psystar in July 2008 claiming the company violated its copyrights and licensing agreement when it sold a computer with Mac OS X installed on it. Apple’s end-user licensing agreement forbids Mac OS X from being installed on non-Apple hardware.

However, PearC feels that its computers are legal. In the FAQ section of the company’s Web site and translated by Macworld UK, they said “We would not offer our PearCs, if we of the opinion that it is legal.”
