With the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas an open stage for technology companies to engage in a few days of trade show one-upmanship, flash memory specialist is looking to enjoy some of the spotlight thanks to its new line of solid-state storage devices.

According to SanDisk Corp. its third-generation ‘G3’ series of solid-state drives (SSDs) are set to arrive as the “world’s fastest” multi-level cell (MLC) storage solutions and have been created as enhanced replacement units for existing notebook hard disk drives (HDDs).
Available in data sizes of 60GBs, 120GBs and 240GBs, SanDisk claims its G3 drives are more than five times quicker than optimal HDDs, which equates to a spin speed of up to 40,000rpm. It also says the new line will more than double the performance offered by SSD solutions shipped during 2008 and improve computer system boot times.
In terms of read and write speeds, the G3 series will deliver read performance of 200MB/s and write performance of 140MB/s. The series will also extend the reliability credentials of solid-state technology with a mean time between failures (MTBF) of two million hours.
Notably, the G3 line also reduces the high pricing usually associated with the improved speed, efficiency and reliability of SSDs, with the 60GB model costing $149 USD, the 120GB option priced at $249 USD, and the upper-tier 240GB drive costing $499 USD.
