Ultra Mobile Devices, popularly known as UMDs, are the next generation mobile computing devices that sit between a PC and a handheld. In terms of power, size and functionality, UMDs are capable enough to manage resource intensive tasks and offer entertainment on the go. Such devices now make up many of the most sophisticated mobile computing gadgets and one of the main reasons for this growth is the cut throat competition among the UMD processor makers.

As per a recent study conducted by ABI Research, processor vendors play a vital role in shaping the future market for UMDs. The two major processor vendors are x86 and ARM and these two are competing head to head to maintain and expand their market share. ABI Research also feels that the x86 vendors must improve the power consumption of the processors while executing instructions in order to give ARM based vendors a good competition. ARM processors are found in everything from mobile phones, to pocket PCs, to PDAs like the Palm Treo 680, giving the company a very wide market presence. The ARM is also heading towards improving its processor architecture and is working with software vendors to make sure that their future processor’s architecture and instruction sets are compatible with the latest software.
ABI Research principal analyst Philip Solis commented, “The future shape of this market will be determined by engineering success on the x86 side versus business success on the ARM side. x86-based processor vendors are in a very good position in the near term as far as product wins and market share are concerned. However, as mobile internet devices (MIDs) start to surpass netbooks in shipment volumes, ARM-based solutions will be in a better position.”
