NVIDIA is set to power mobile devices made by HTC, Taiwan-based manufacturer of portable devices with its new Tegra processor. The Tegra processor is a System-on-a-Chip (SoC) architecture that is aimed for mobile devices and netbooks. This comes after recents revelations made by NVIDIA that it was in talks with partners to over low cost Tegra-based netbooks. The NVIDIA Tegra applications processor in the new handset design will probably make an appearance around the by the second half of 2009.

Tegra's SoC design incorporates an ARM-based processor, a GeForce graphics core, a northbridge and southbridge (components on a motherboard commonly referred to as chipset), including memory functions onto a single chip. The product lineup will include the Tegra 600 (700 MHz) and the Tegra 650 (800 MHz). The lineup also includes the Tegra APX 2500 (600 MHz).
The Tegra 600 is meant for GPS devices and the automotive segment, the Tegra 650 is designed for portable devices like handhelds and netbooks, while the APX 2500 is a HD version for mobile devices.
NVIDIA also launched the GTX295, its twin-GPU graphics card, at the CES last week. NVIDIA probably hopes to reap immediate benefits with its move to the netbook/handset segment -- a move that is seen as one that may bolster the revenue generated from their high-end graphics cards. Last month, NVIDIA launched its Intel Atom processor-based Ion platform for netbooks.
