Microsoft Web Platform Installer goes 1.0

The Web Platform Installer (Web PI) is a simple free tool that allows you to install all or part of Microsoft's entire Web Platform and keep each individual component up-to-date. Web PI downloads an XML-based manifest of available products and technologies, which is continually updated to ensure that each time the tool is run it will offer the most current components and the latest versions of each technology (it highlights newly available or prerelease software). You can also choose to install extensions for IIS 7.0 and ASP.NET, service packs, database drivers, and other relevant Web platform technologies.

After a Release Candidate two months ago, Web PI has now hit the final 1.0 version (under 60KB). Just like the RC, the final version has three installation options:

  • Complete: installs all available server and development products, Web server components, Web server extensions, and additional technologies
  • ASP.NET Developer: installs the server components, tools and technologies that support the development and hosting of ASP.NET applications
  • Custom: allows you to choose exactly which components are installed

Web PI supports 32-bit and 64-bit architectures, and runs on Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, Windows Server 2003 SP2, and Windows Server 2008. It can install the following components:

  • Internet Information Services 5.1 on XP SP3
  • Internet Information Services 6.0 on Server 2003 SP2
  • Internet Information Services 7.0 on Vista SP1 and Server 2008
  • SQL Server 2008 Express
  • .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
  • Visual Web Developer 2008 Express SP1
  • ASP.NET, Complete and Custom installation options
  • XML-based product manifest updated automatically when tool is run

You can find help and support on the Web Platform Installer forums.
