Microsoft targets SMBs

Microsoft Corp recently released a new suite of business server software aimed at small-and-medium size businesses.

The Windows Essential Server solution was developed for SMB customers who are cautious with their IT budget, the company said. Ramesh Rajandaran, product marketing manager of Microsoft Malaysia said the solution can be seen as an instant technology set-up for SMBs.

“It has all the features of a server used in large companies and easy to deploy,” Ramesh said, adding that it has also been priced specifically to fit the IT budget of an SMB.

The solution is divided into two editions — Small Business Server 2008 and Essential Business Server 2008.

Small Business Server 2008 is an upgrade to Microsoft’s Small Business Server 2003. It is divided into two editions — standard and premium — and each edition can support a company of five to 75 users.

The standard edition ships with Windows Server 2008 technology and comes with Windows Sharepoint Service 3.0.

The software, he said, will enable SMBs to have all the features their larger counterparts like their own website and options to retrieve information from their desktop computers in the office even while doing their rounds outside the office environment.

“We’ve taken VPN features and delivered it to SMBs so they can work more efficiently and there’s even a tool to help them set up their own websites so they can work more easily with their clients and potential customers,” Ramesh explained.

The premium version has everything contained in the standard version and comes with an additional server running SQLServer 2008. “The second server is excellent for companies that want to offer a line of business applications,” Ramesh said.

Essential Business Server 2008 is a new component in the Windows Essential Server solution and comes with all the features of the Small Business Server 2008 plus an extra database.

It is suitable for businesses with up to 300 users.
