iGo green charger for laptops to debut at CES 2009

A company called iGo has announced that it will be unveiling a new green charger for notebooks at CES 2009 along with some other items. The charger promises to reduce vampire power, which happens when a notebook on the charger draws more power than it needs resulting in waste.

iGo will be unveiling its Laptop Charger that uses automatic shut-off and recovery technology to stop sending power to a notebook when the battery is fully charged. According to the manufacturer, the notebook charger uses 80% less power in standby than standard notebook chargers.

Along with the notebook charger, the firm will also be introducing a surge protector and a wall outlet that have the same power reducing technology built-in. Also being unveiled at CES 2009 are iGo chargers for netbooks that will charge a netbook and an additional gadget like a cell phone at the same time. Pricing and availability for the devices is unknown.

I really like the idea of the charger for my netbook working on two devices at once, assuming my iPhone is compatible; I could shed one more cable from my bag when I travel. The company isn't specific, but I would assume that the laptop charger would start sending power to the notebook battery again when it detects the charge is no longer 100%.
