The Chinese telecom equipment firm Huawei Technologies has lashed out at Australian media reports that allege the firm has links with the Chinese government and military.

The storm erupted when Australian security agencies levelled the charges. Sources close to Huawei apparently said that Huawei was actually an arm of the Chinese military which was later spun off as a separate company under the name of Huawei. This has been taken to imply that there is still a huge probability that the company has links with the Chinese army.
Huwawei has responded that the company is privately held, with the entire ownership of the company held by employees and administered through an employee share ownership plan. It added, "No other organisations, including the government, army, or business, hold stakes in Huawei." Huawei further maintained that the firm manufactures equipment only for customers.
Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei has been alleged to have come from a military background, but the firm rubbished these allegations. The company has also counter-attacked, saying that military service was common among North American and European business tycoons as well.
Huawei has a large presence in India too - and with the country on less than friendly terms with China, the allegations could be a headache for Indian security agencies as well.
When contacted, Huawei refused to say a word on the row. The Indian Intelligence Bureau’s (IB) subsidiary office in Bangalore too declined to comment on whether the company would be examined in India as well.
